The following is the result of a surname search at Ancestry.com's historic newspapers. That's a subscription service. I point it out only because of all the old Decatur papers it apparently has. I don't have a subscription myself and do not know if this is all of the Decatur papers it has. You might want to keep it in mind as a resource. Does anyone have list of names buried in Warnick cemetery? Beverly
I'm trying to remember when Mother and Dad moved to the farm. I think it was in 1954 or 1955. Our farm is two miles straight west of Boody, just west of the Bailey house on the main street out of Boody going west. My brother still lives there. In fact, I am in Illinois visiting and am driving grain trucks for him! A big difference from my five-speed Mustang convertible! Came home to take care of my mother who fell out of an apple tree (at age 75). Once a farm girl, always a farm girl, eh? It's such a small world! Where in Idaho are you now? We lived in Idaho Falls for three years back around 1980 of so. My husband was stationed there. We loved it there and hated to leave! I remember the Greens and the store with its pot belly stove and big meat counter. I sure hated to see the grade school vacant. I haven't had time to go by on this trip yet. It's so strange to see the elevator in ruin! Before I leave though, I'll take a drive down memory lane. Most of my relatives are buried in Hall Cemetery and Warnick Cemetery. I have spent a lot of time there throughout the years. It's killing me to drive the trucks repeatedly by the Brea and Long Point cemeteries and not stop. I told my brother if I turn up missing from an elevator run to look for me in the cemeteries! I've been sneaking away to the Blue Mound library while the elvator closes at noon. I love reading the old Blue Mound Leaders. They have a pretty good obit and marriage card file from the Leader. Glad to know you! Jane Meisenhelter Griffin
> Jane, Enjoyed receiving your email so much. It is a small world, Boody is such a very small patch on the earth. You wouls know my relatives I am sure. My Aunt Dot Schenck, my cousins daughters, Shirley and Cheryl Buckley. My cousins Ron, Robert and Janet Morey. Aunt Orie Neintker and Cousin Helen Conrad. I went to school with the Bailey girls. I went by their home last year when I was visiting. I have some relatives in the Warnick Cem. Nientker, Warnick. Most of them in Zion Cem. there in Boody are related to me. I live 7 miles north of Coeur d'alene, Idaho a small town called Hayden. About 35 miles East of Spokane, WA. It is beautiful up here. We have been here since 1977, when we moved up here from Mesa, Arizona. You should go out to Stonington to the Pueblo Farm museum. The Nientker store is there, still has the pot belly stove in it. I lived in the house next to Katie Herrdt's place on Main. Actually Katie was related to me also. I took piano lessons from Leona Eckhart. She was engaged to marry my Uncle Lynn Smith when he was killed in 1949. I do miss that little town, so many wonderful memories. So good to hear from a Boody-ite. I keep in touch with Dick Bowman, we met on the internet. I visited with him last year. I am trying to find out what happened to the original Baptist Church building that was in Boody, Illinois. Was it torn down or did they move it somewhere else. There is a newer building there now. Helen in Idaho
You may not be aware that the State Archives is working on a pre 1916 death index. The work is being done by volunteers and will take a very long time. Remember, there are a lot of folks who died before 1916 who didn't get a death certificate. But if they did eventually it should be in the database. Does any one have cemetery records for Blue Mound, Macon? Looking for my grgrgrandfather Jacob Ray who died in Blue Mound 1889. Do not know which cemetery he is buried in. Also his wife Mary Ray has been a hard one. Last census I found her was 1900 in Moultrie County. She is not buried in Moultrie. Jacob was born 1841 and Mary was born 1846. Thanks in advance Glo
Jane... You must have lived in Boody after I left, your last name didn't sound familiar. I moved from there in 1952. I lived in the house that was between Katie Heerdt and Dot Schenck. Dot was my Aunt, my dad's sister. My dad was born in that house. You probably knew my cousins, Ron, Robert and Jan Morey. Frank and Nellie Green ran the post office when I lived there also. My dad's first cousin Helen Conrad and her husband P.E. ran the Nientker's store. I was related to most everyone in Boody at that time. I was back there last year and my cousin Jan and I walked Boody and had a great time remembering our childhood days in that sleepy little town. I also was able to visit with a friend who lived there when I did, Donna [Swarms]. She lives in Decatur now. Charlie Williams sister Ruth Ann married my cousin, Ron Morey. I was a Smith, my dad was Reid Smith, he worked at the elevator in Elwin. At one time when I was about 4 we lived across from the elevator in Elwin but when we were back! there last year I was going to take a picture of the house and all the houses on that side of the road were gone. I don't know what happened to them. I also visited with Dick Bowman when I was back there. I met him on the internet about 4 years ago so it was fun to finally meet him. He knew my cousin jan so she went with us to visit with him. I have a lot of information and pictures of Boody, also the Zion Cem and the Salem Cem. I took pictures of a lot of the tombstones. If I can help you with anything , let me know. Good to meet another Boody-ite. Glo, I checked in Vol. III which has the Macon, Macon Co., Il., cemeteries in it, as well as Vol. 1, which has the Blue Mound cemeteries in it. No Rays were listed in the Vol. 1 index. There is no index for Vol. II, but I looked alphabetically for Ray in each of the cemeteries with no luck. Were Ray and Mary Ann Warbach married 14 Nov 1862 in DeKalb County? She may have been married there with family. Was "Ray" ever spelled "Rau"? I found several Rau's, but no Ray and Mary. DOES ANYONE HAVE AN INDEX TO VOLUME III? I don't know if it's just missing from my book, or if it was printed later ?? Jane
I got so caught up with Harvey, I forgot to tell you that HENRY STRICKLEN (or Stickler) was 58 a farmer from Bavaria, married to Elisabeth, 49 from Tennessee, Daniel, 21 from Pa., David, 20 from Pa.; Emaline, 16 fromm Pa.; Augustus, 11 from Pa., and Josephine, 13 also born in Pa.). I think think this is probably yours. Jane
Gloria, In the 1870 Macon Co., Il., census, there are no Stickler's listed. However, it does tell you to see "Stricklen." Under Stricklen, you find Augustus, Daniel, David, Elisabeth, Emaline, Henry, Josephine. Under "Strickland," is Elizabeth, George and Henry, all of the same household. In the 1870 West Virginia census, Nicholas County, Wilderness Twp., is a Harvey Stickler, born in Virginia about 1840. In 1892, I found Harvey Stickler (born in Va.), along with H. K. (born in Pa.), B. F. (born in Pa.) Jacob (born in Ohio), Arnold (born in Switz.) and William (born in U.S.), all registered to vote in the Chicago Voters Index. Harvey has only been a resident of the state of Il. for 2 years and of Cook Co. for 1 year. I don't know if any of this helps you or not. Do you know for sure that your Harvey Stickler was a resident of Macon Co.? Jane Griffin
My Dad and his family were from Boody - anyone remember Major Thomas and Anna Williams and their kids, Marie, Art, John and Lyle?
Zion Cemetery is the name of the cemetery in Boody. You can see it as you are leaving town on Route 48, headed for Blue Mound and Taylorville. It's on the west line (or right-hand side as you head for Blue Mound.) Ralph and Velma are buried there. A lot of the Boody/Blue Mound farmers are buried in Hall Cemetery and Bethel Cemetery. There is also a Muirhead, Brown, Pope cemetery in Blue Mound Township (Boody). These cemeteries are in Volume 1 of the DGS Cemetery Inscription Book. The Warnicks are buried in their own cemetery, later named Huddleston Cemetery. I drove by it not too long ago and there is a new home built on it. I don't know if there is still access to this small cemetery any more, but it sure was a hard one to find out in the middle of a field the first time I went looking. Even sadder is that they don't have good records on its occupants. Someone walked off with the papers. I have two sibling children from my gggrandfather buried there, but no record proving it. My greataunt fortunately remembers the service, even though she was a very young girl. Jane Griffin
I went to high school with Jessie and Lillie May's son, Charles. I ran into him not too long ago on a visit to my brother's who still resides in our farm house two miles west of town. Jane Griffin
I remember Frank and Nellie. I used to ride my bike in from the farm and visit with them and worked for years (from the time I was 12 until I was about 17 or 18) at the Mayview Cafe which was located right on 48 just across from the old post office! Isn't it a small world since computers came of age? Or is it that WE have come of age? Jane (Meisenhelter) Griffin
