    1. [ILMACON] Sarver - Baylor - Agee?
    2. Fred Gillette
    3. Hi, I'm looking for descendants of Cary O. and Nancy Jane Sarver Baylor. I have reason to believe that they had a daughter named, Arnette Baylor, who married a Coy Agee about 1909. In 1930 Coy and Arnette were listed with several children in Maroa Twp., I'm interested in trying to find someone that might be able to confirm that this Arnette Baylor was the daughter of Nancy Jane Sarver and Cary O. Baylor. Nancy Jane was my 2nd g-grand aunt. Thanks. Fred G. in NV. _________________________________________________________________ Check out the new MSN 9 Dial-up — fast & reliable Internet access with prime features! http://join.msn.com/?pgmarket=en-us&page=dialup/home&ST=1

    2. That really saddens me to hear about Decatur. When I was a child in the 40's and 50's it was a thriving city. I remember how special Monday nights were as that was the night the stores stayed open late, so we would make our little journey from the village of Boody into the "big" city. Boy, how things have changed. Do they still have the city buses? I spent many weekends at my grandparents home who lived in Decatur and every Saturday I along with the other neighborhood kids would get on the bus and go into town, get off at the transfer house and take in a good old movie. Usually Gene Autry or Roy Rogers. ha Then back to the transfer house and the ride back to the neighborhood. Those were good days for a child to grow up, things have changed so much. Thanks for the email and the update on Decatur. 3. A problem in Decatur is a lot of the big industry has left, either left the state or left the country. Plants ran the town and then they left. The job situation is not good and people with no money don't pay taxes. It used to be noted for its beautiful parks. The parks are still there but they aren't so beautiful. I am told the road between Warrensburg and Forsyth is totally built up like a subdivision. It was farms not that long age. These people don't pay taxes in Decatur. The Warrensburg school district is huge and I assume Maroa-Forsyth is also. And then there's Decatur's big mistake -- the mall. They refused to let them build in Decatur so they built in Forsyth and downtown followed. It isn't that great a mall but since it is all there is for miles it is a big draw. 1. Re: [ILMACON] Durfee School
    2. I was just back there for three months this past summer and drove by several closed schools, which made me so sad to see them boarded up. I wasn't paying good enough attention since I only attended kindergarten in Decatur (Pugh School) on Grand, I believe, but not positive, before joining my parents out near Boody. Decatur is slowly decaying and dying with homes and industry going out toward Mt. Zion. The north end of town is really growing. I'll try to check with my sister this weekend and see if she can fill us in on the latest. She lives on the north end of town, but all her family is still out toward Boody, so she's driving out that way quite frequently. Jane

    2. Gary, Thanks for your reply. I feel better now that I am not the only one who is confused. ha I attended the Durfee School in 1950 and I know it wasn't on the West side. My grandmother lived in the 900 block of E. Mueller Ave. and we walked down Jasper St. to go to school. They must have left the building and named the other school Durfee. Thanks for the info. 3. Call the Durfee school at it's listed number and ask them what the situation is. Was the old Durfee next to Roosevelt Jr. High? I went to Garfield and Roosevelt.. If it is that schoold I think it was torn down because it wasn't up to safety codes. I remember the fire escape being a slide in a tube at the side of the building. 2. Well I'm confused after watching this dialog. H. B. Durfee Grade School was where I went to K thru 6 in the 50's. It's address was 1222 E. Grand Ave. The school and it's playgrounds occupied an entire city block at the corner of E. Grand Ave. and N. Jasper St. I have a 2000-2001 Decatur telephone book which gives this address. However, the Decatur Public Schools web-site gives a Durfee Magnate School at 1000 W. Grand Ave.which is way out west and a long way from the H. B. Durfee Elementary School that I attended. They don't list any school on E. Grand. My guess is that they abandoned the old school recently and moved the name to a newer facility out west. I think the old school is still standing but maybe not in use. In the 2001 telephone book the school at 1000 W. Grand was Garfield El. School. I recall Garfield as being a much newer than Durfee, like maybe the 40's as opposed to Durfee being built in probably the 1900's or the teens. Interesting conversation. Gary Lamb Plano,TX

    3. Durfee School is at 1222 E. Garfield, Decatur, IL 62521. I'm reliably informed that's just around the corner from Jasper. 3. Hi Starla, Your message brought back some old fond memories. My Aunt & Uncle lived on the corner of Curtis & Illinois Streets (just down from the housing project) at the same time (they lived there for many years.) If you'd like to send me some further information I could ask around and maybe help you? I also had grandparents that lived on East Orchard (in Decatur) from about 1942-1965. Don't think that was considered out in the country. Where was your Orchard Drive located? 3. This obit was emailed to me. I know nothing about it but the sender is hopes someone finds it useful. A copy of the following obituary was found in the family Bible of Alphonso and Mary L. ISBELL. Apparently this man was a friend of the family. In handwritten pencil, is the the following date: April 3, 1913. The article was cut out of a newspaper, but the newspaper wasn't referenced. J. F. WORKING, I.D. ENGINEER IS DEAD --------------- In Railroad Service Forty-three Years. -------------- John Frederick Working, Illinois Central engineer, died at 1 o'clock Thursday morning at the family residence, 157 East King street. He had been suffering from a complication of diseases for some time. He had been ill for three months and for the last two weeks had been confined to his bed. His age was fifty nine years and two months. He was born in Mercer county, Pa., Jan. 13, 1854. He moved with his family to Augusta, Ill., the following year. He and Miss Mary C. Jones of near Golden, Ill., were married July 27, 1875. Mr. Working entered the employ of the C. B. & O. railroad when he was sixteen years old. He worked as brakeman, conductor, fireman and engineer for that road until the strike of 1888. In 1893 he began working as engineer for the Illinois Central and was employed in that capacity up to the time of his death. He is survived by his wife and one son, David Earl Working, and one daughter, Elizabeth Mabel Working, both of Decatur. He was a member of the B. of L. For an annual fee of $15-18 plus an option fee of $12 for a total of $27-30 you can have access to Heritage Quest. Heritage Quest is well worth $30 a year. http://www.tcghs.org/membership.htm Click on optional remote access for details. This is the least expensive way I've seen to get Heritage Quest if your public library doesn't provide it. It's an excellent resource for genealogists with census records, actual pages of more than 25,000 genealogy and history books and, coming this year, the PERSI index. I've talked about this resource before, noting it is only available to libraries. Here's a way to get it at home.
