Jerry, I had forgotten about that train! Yes, I do remember. I also remember a Blaylock's (five and dime store they called it then) out Grand Ave. in the early 50's. Any relation? Yes, a drive in ... couldn't recall what they called it <memory the first go go they say> I think the drive in stayed open even in the winter time (but I may be wrong there.) I also remember King's Restaurant which was more downtown. Wasn't it very close to the "new" Steak & Shake (of the 1950's?) We use to go there a lot after Church on Sundays. There was a school across the street from where my grandparents lived (1200 block of East Orchard, Decatur.) They bought this house in 1942 <memory here.> Any ideas what the name of this school was? I believe it was closed by 1950. I, too, well remember when Lakeview High was first built! I also remember when the "new" Oak Grove School was built and remember going to Kindergarten in the original, old Oak Grove School (on the Grand Ave. "curve.") There was another roller rink on the east edge of downtown, at least in the first half of the 40's. Having birthday parties at that rink was very popular---easy on parents. Refreshments were pop and those marvelous squishy bread donuts. I have a book, "Decatur, Illinois Snapshots", published by the Herald & Review" in 2000. Has pictures up to 1950. That really brings back memories! This discussion of schools reminded me of that book, and I found a May 1949 picture of Grant School students lined up to wash their hands in the furnace room because there is no plumbing in the school. (There is a soap dispenser on the wall, and a wash basin and a bucket on. A few other pictures: 1931 picture of a student learning sign language at E. A. Gastman School. 1911 picture of what is probably the whole student body lined up outside the former Jones School that was still standing in 2000 at 2495 N. Water. November 1931: Manual training class at Centennial Junior High School---woodworking. 1888: The first public school built on Church Street in 1857. The Steak n Shake was there by the lake in the 40's because I went there often and I moved from Decatur to Arizona in 1947. All this reminiscing makes me want to go back for a visit. My grandparents Charles Herbert MARSH & Janie Mae (STOGSDILL)in Friends Creek Twp lived east of Maroa near AGEE families. My mother Ella Mae (MARSH) b. 1922 Friends Creek Twp. east of Maroa, IL and her younger siblings Pete, Alice, Shirley, Bob and Carol MARSH went to school with AGEE children. The children in the Friendscreek twp area went to Argenta Highschool. I imagine your AGEE did so also. My mother and siblings went to Willow Glenn school east of Maroa when they were children. I have Willow Glenn Gradeschool photos on the Macon Co, IL US GEN WEB site. The school closed sometime in the 1950s. I don't know all many of the children's names in them. Maybe someone can look at them and see if their family has names of some, or perhaps photos like them? Beverly (HIMES) BARGER now in NM

Hello, Durfee School is still standing but the building is no longer in use. They moved Durfee to the Garfield School building at 1000 W. Grand. It is now a magnet school. Garfield students were moved to 300 Meadow Terrace. The front of the building has Garfield on it but the side has Durfee Magnet School on it. The old Durfee building at the corner of E. Grand and N. I remember Fairview and the park beside Decatur Lake Beach as a child. The parks were beautiful. We to them went often as a child. We swam in Decatur Lake until the polio scare when they closed the Decatur Lake Beach to swiming. The Lake was still beautiful in the 1950s. There was no air-conditioning there in the 1940s when I grew up there on 345 N. 25th St. I went to Roach gradeschool. We rode the buses for transportation then. Deatur was a very nice town in those days. I remember as a child the Staley building with the colored lights shining on the outside of top floors of it during World War II. I remember I loved the big old Sears store with the candy counter. Grandmother would take me there and buy me orange slices, coconut macaroons and that those buterscotch flavored pecan pieces by the pound. tow of my aunts worked there. Aunt Esther TRAYLOR was a seamstress there early and for many years. She died last year. Decatur was a nice place to grow up when I was a child in the 1940s.
