    2. Elam's was the name of the root beer stand on Eldorado. They live next door to my mother and step dad. Still a very nice couple! Even in the 60's, the Steak and Shake was the place to be on Friday and Saturday night. We would drive through it over and over waiting to get a spot. You would go and order a coke and maybe fries and just sit there waiting to see everyone in Decatur and surrounding towns going through. I went to the new Steak and Shake several times while home this summer. Still great food, and good memories inside. It's so strange to drive by where the one on Main (?) Street used to be. Isn't that the southbound main drag from 51 to the Lake? Does anyone remember eating at Kings Restaurant or ordering chicken from the Flying Kings? What a treat when our grandmother would order. We kids would stand in the window and wait for them to deliver the chicken? Can't believe we were thrilled with chicken, when we killed, dressed and fried our own all the time! Same goes for the Mayview Cafe's chicken. Mmmm. I'm getting hungry for some good chicken and hamburgers just remembering! Jane

That's where my mother worked from the time she was a young girl until she married a a handsome young man she met at the Lighthouse, a young man who became a Navy pilot in World War II and then a Marine Pilot in the Korean Conflict. He served with Ed McMahon. Of course, it was my dad! 3. I have been following the emails about Decatur, I was born there, just recently visited there, was able to find my ggrandparents home they built in the early 1900, it is now being renovated, and beautiful, and close to first desing, 1353 N. Edwards street, and just 3 blocks up the street at 1672 North Edwards street, is the house I was born in. and after my kids remarking is it still there after all this time, it really was a great trip to find these treasures. But when I see that Joann is from El Paso, I lived in Fabens, little farm town east of EP, and lived in the area 44 years, now live since 1999 in San Antonio, Texas. 3. I think during the war everyone went to Chaps. They still had it in 1960 but not too long after that. I don't know when it started but I know it was a teen and young adult hangout during the war. Of course, families went also. At my mother's funeral an old friend of hers was telling me how he and his wife used to carry me around the rink as they skated. I was the only baby at the time, a novelty that didn't last too long. <g> Cheryl Rothwell logancty@mindspring.com Logan County, IL, Coordinator, ILGenWeb www.rootsweb.com/~illogan Central IL Regional Coordinator, ILGenWeb Clark, Downing, Harding, Lucas et al

    3. Do you mean like a drive in like that root beer stand on Eldorado whose name I can't recall, where the carhops come out and take your order? I know my cousin used to go there when she was in high school but I know she sat inside. I confess I wasn't old enough to be going to Steak & Shake in 1950.
