    3. I live close to Normal, IL. The original Steak n Shake is now a Monical's Pizza. I have been following your conversations. It's brought back a lot of memories. I too am from Decatur. My folks were born and raised in Maroa. I am down in Decatur once a week. Just can't seem to leave my roots. The Decatur Genealogical Society is now out by Farm & Fleet on the south end of town. 3. Speaking of changes, this happened to me. I lived in Chicago and was down visiting. My friend told me to meet her for lunch at the library where she was working. I went to the library there on Main and Eldorado and waited on the steps. Boy was it dirty. I was stunned at the poor upkeep, dirt, papers, bird droppings, etc. I waited and waited. No one came or went. I decided to go in and ask. The door was locked. I found a pay phone and called. They finally figured out where I was and advised it had moved, gave me the new address. That was useless to me. Eventually they put my friend on the phone and she explained it in terms I could understand -- I think it was the old Sears store. I don't know if that's where the library still is or not. That was at least 30 years ago. The library building where I waited is long gone. 3. Ok, folks, the definitive history of Steak n Shake from their web site. Note that despite pictures in the facilities showing the Decatur franchises as #2 or #3 it isn't even listed. Steak n Shake was founded in 1934 in Normal, Illinois. Gus Belt, the founder of Steak n Shake, was a quality restaurateur who owned a restaurant/gas station called Shell's Chicken. Central Illinois had plenty of chicken and beer restaurants so Gus soon realized he needed to be unique and different. With a little help from his friends, he started Steak n Shake in February of 1934. The Steak stood for Steakburger. Gus would wait for the busiest time in his counter only restaurant, wheel in a barrel of steaks (including round steak, sirloin steak, and T-bones) and ground the steaks into burgers right in front of the customers. Hence, the origin of the famous slogan "In Sight It Must Be Right." The Steakburger is still the finest burger served anywhere in the world-the finest of steaks ground into pucks and through the art of grilling on a very hot grill, turned into a burger beyond comparison. The Shake in Steak n Shake refers to a creamy, real-milk, hand-dipped Milk Shake that endured as the best Milk Shake on the planet. Gus Belt used to put the Multi-Mixers Shake machines in the windows of his restaurant so cars driving by had to stop for a Milk Shake. Because of the high quality food served on glass and china at reasonable prices by friendly servers, Gus had to make changes in order to accommodate their ever increasing demand. His first move was to purchase a chain of restaurants in Central Illinois called "Goal Post" and convert them to Steak n Shakes. He then added curb service because every restaurant had a never ending line to occupy one of the coveted seats. Demand became greater and greater and soon Gus expanded to Galesburg in 1939. He also sold his first franchise in the late 30's. St. Louis, Indianapolis, Northern Illinois, Daytona Beach, and Hot Springs, Arkansas soon followed. Gus Belt passed away in 1954 and his wife, Edith took over the business. She continued to operate the business, and decided not to expand but rather to care for the Steak n Shake family. In January 1969 Edith Belt sold Steak n Shake to Longchamps Inc., a steakhouse company from the East Coast. Longchamps then sold its majority stock interest to the Franklin Company in September 1972. Robert Cronin, as chairman of Steak n Shake, led an aggressive program to satiate the intense demand for Steak n Shake and the company grew to 130 units in 1975. In the 70's, drive-thru's replaced the curb service. Due to intense competition and great distance between restaurants, several restaurants were closed. At this time, the corporate headquarters were moved from Bloomington, Illinois to Indianapolis, Indiana. In 1981, Cronin sold his interest to E.W. Kelley and Associates. Because of his marketing acumen, E.W. "Ed" Kelley is considered the "modern day" founder of Steak n Shake. Understanding that customers' needs had changed little since 1934, Mr. Kelley swiftly returned the restaurant to its roots, stressing the preparation of cooked-to-order food, served to customers accompanied by real china, glass and flatware. Menus were updated with melts, salads, and breakfast items. And to meet an ever-increasing demand, all Steak n Shake restaurants began to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Steak n Shake began growing again in 1990, sparked by the knowledge that a successful brand must evolve in order to prosper. By the time of Mr. Kelley's passing on July 4, 2003, the restaurant chain had more than doubled in size. Steak n Shake currently operates over 400 restaurants (57 of which are franchised) in 18 different states-a convincing testament to Mr. Kelley's drive, wisdom and business skills.

    1. [ILMACON] memories
    2. John and Barbara Ekiss
    3. Some of our EKISS relatives lived in Macon Co. Our direct line in Bethany. Several years ago we finally visited Bethany and on that trip learned that it is now a 'bedroom' community to Decatur residents that wish to live in a quiet, rural area. My husband, typical man!!? just doesn't remember his childhood or much about his Grandparents. He'd tell me they were from Decatur but he remembered going to GA. Then all of the sudden one day he told me he'd not attended his Grandmother's funeral in IL but had gone there with his parents. They said he shouldn't to go to the funeral however. He was 15 at the time. IL! the hunt was on and I've traced the Ekiss family way back. I'd love to hear memories of Bethany if anyone has some. I think finding the social history of a community is more than half the fun of genealogy research. This is the type of discussion I seek on a roots -L and wish it was more frequent. I've been told to join roots history L if that is what I'm interested in but the few history L I've joined are more scholarly and less personal experience. Our ancestors were real people. This brings them to life, makes them human to know where they had that hot dog, or ice skated, or where they might have stole the first kiss. Barb in AZ

    3. Actually, the person I am interested in is George Potter of Clinton, Dewitt Co, Il. He worked on the railroad along with George McWilliams, and is possibly related to me through an illegitimate birth. 3. While I have roots in Macon co, Maroa, and Decatur, I am also interested in the information,. but I have had over a hundred messages in the past few days, 53 this morning. It is time consuming to deal with them everytime I turn on the PC. I understand that to go on the site to is a fast way to reach all the people to for Macon Co. chatting. So, why don't you just email each other, I am sure there is a way you could all chat on personal interests. I don't mean to start a discord, but it is a little too much to deal with so many emails, and having to work out the ones visiting or researchers. Mary

    3. On the tv show, "Ripley's Believe It Or Not", just the other day, there was an episode on the Avon Theatre being haunted. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see it (my husband told me about it ... said it was good.) 3. Hi Sue, if you know the ate or close to it, you can order the micro-film for old newspapers from the Old State Capital Historical Library, in Springfield, Ill. There is no charge for ordering and reading the papers. You can read it on their machines, I found obits. for two ancestores I didn't have. If you are interested, and want the further information, I will be glad to send you their email address. Mary Sue12632@aol.com wrote:I wrote to the Macon Co. Courthouse requesting a COPY of the "marriage license" & "return of the marriage" for Homer F. GARDNER & Gertrude R. WHEELING who applied for a Marriage License on 18 Oct. 1924 (as published in the "Decatur Daily Review" on Tues., Oct. 21, 1924), license issued by County Clerk Harvey Fay. I was advised to send a money order for $11.00. I mailed the money order and it was returned to me - NO RECORD FOUND. THIS IS VERY CONFUSING AS ISSUANCE OF THE LICENSE WAS PUBLISHED IN THE LOCAL NEWSPAPER. Anyone on this list who lives near the courthouse who could go there & check this out? I would be happy to reimburse for time spent & copies made. Sue in NY Sue12632@aol.com ==== ILMACON Mailing List ==== Visit the Macon County ILGenWeb page at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmacon/

    3. I went to Centennial very briefly in about 1955 and it was not the same school. I don't know whether it could have been an "older" Centennial or not, but don't think so. The school on Orchard was on a corner (can't remember the name of the other street), a brick 2-story. 3. No, my Frys weren't related to the McMillens. Mine were Susannah (Kraft, Rife) Fry, d. in Decatur 1923; William Wallace Fry, d. in Decatur 1906, and Homer Jesse Fry, m.
