    2. You are right. The Green's post office was right across the street from the Colonial Cafe. The bus would let me off at the post office so I didn't have to go "all the way" in town to the grade school and then walk back to the highway. They weren't allowed to drop me off at the cafe on their way by, but instead dropped me off on the otherside so that I had to walk across the highway. Now, go figure!

    1. Re: Re: [ILMACON] Boody corner
    2. I was back there in Boody a year and a half ago, and it made me very sad as my cousin Jan Carpenter walked the entire little village and talked about each house and who lived there when we were kids. Some of the houses are gone, the little Boody church is gone, replaced by an newer one. The Neintker store is gone, we did get to go see it where they moved it to Stonington. The lady opened it for us and we were able to walk around it, boy did that bring back childhood memories, we have come a long way from those little country stores. The elevator is all rusted, it was a busy place when I was a child. The little post office that the Green's ran is boarded up. The Gables restaurant is someones house now, the Crawford's ran that. I am hoping to get back there again this year and dig around some more. 2. > You mentioning the old oak wall phones brought back memories. When I first moved to Boody in 1945 that was the phone we had. There were 13 people on our line. Boy it was hard to make a call with so many on it. My Aunt Sally Matthews was on the line and used to listen to every conversation. ha When they replaced those phones I remember there was someone there in Boody who had all of them up in the hay loft of their barn. I too would love to have one of them now. We also had a huge lilac bush and I never forgot the wonderful smell. When we moved to Idaho in 1977 I planted a 50 foot hedge of lilacs and they are about 20 feet tall now. Boy do they perfume the air in May. Takes me right back to Boody. > From: Bcookiegma@cs.com > Date: 2004/01/17 Sat AM 05:32:36 PST > To: ILMACON-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [ILMACON] The Inter Urban train & the Maroa telephone operator Building > > Does anyone remember the old Inter-Urban train. 1. Re: [ILMACON] KNAPP -- "Rachael the wife of Wm Heimes"
    2. Well, hello "cous' by marriage"! I'm so grateful for the interest we all showed in Decatur! See, our meanderings have led us to Shelby and Moultrie Counties! I'm working on my step-dad's genealogy as well. Don't have much since I just started on it, but I do have something on the John Chesshire line. It was taken from the book, Portrait and Biographical Record of Shelby and Moultrie Counties, Illinois (1891). Have you seen the article? If not, I'll gladly retype it for you. My step-dad, Bob Campbell, has a great copy of the book, but due to its age, I've wrapped it up and it stays in Decatur. Why I didn't go buy some floppies back when I typed the articles is beyond me. I just brought home the printed sheets of the Chesshire and Campbell lines. John and Ruth (Lupton) Chesshire are the parents of eight children: Frances, Jane, Rachael, Lucinda, Sarah A. and Michael W. If you don't have the article, let me know and I'll post it. Jane G.

    2. Helen, I forgot to tell you that I hope you keep your good memories of the Boody turnoff corner. The store lot is now full of small implements along the construction line with backhoes, etc. You almost miss the turnoff. The Patrofka's have taken over the southeast corner as well as the southwest corner for their car lot too. I hate looking at the corner and at night almost miss the road to turn off to go to the farm! Jane

    1. Re: [ILMACON] Sarver - Baylor - Agee?
    2. I may seem to be "pitching" the Decatur Genealogical Society of which I am a member, but I just want everyone to know how reasonable it is to join and well worth far more than it costs. Membership is only $15 a year. You'll enjoy the quarterlies and you can post in them, as well as have your surnames of interest posted. Then, if you have them do genealogy on a line for you, it costs you a $10 donation! I can't begin to tell you how much info I have gotten for my donations! The genealogist sent me typed family group sheets and copies of the obits, etc. I always received so much info that I donated a few extra dollars. Things that I hadn't found from afar, they had at their fingertips. As I've said before, you can't beat the price! I'll see what I can find for you on the Agee trail from my at-home library. Give me a couple of days. Jane

    1. Re: [ILMACON] Durfee School
    2. Cheryl, you are right. I can remember my mother and grandmother both wishing the Decatur "fathers" would smarten up and build the mall downtown. It's really sad to see how much it deteriorated. I didn't got to the Lincoln Lounge this past summer, but my brother kept bringing me gyro sandwiches from there that were great. What is it with me and food these days? Must be the diet! Jane PS: And you are right, it isn't a very big mall at all, but without going to Springfield, it is all they have.
