    1. [ILMACON-L] Coppenbarger Surname
    2. Earliene M. Kaelin
    3. I am Earliene Kaelin, I have been gathering information on the COPPENBARGER family since the 60's when I went with my mother and aunt as an extra copier. The bug bit and I have been stuck since. Jacob Coppenbarger was born in the lower end of the Shenandoah Valley of Virgina, we are not sure which County, but have found the earliest records in Wythe County. He bought land next in Blount County,TN and as near as we can figure lived there until 1818/1819 at which time he migrated to Illinois. Here he stayed. He married Catherine Snavely in VA. Catherine was the daughter of John Snavely and Elizabeth Musser. We have not found the parents of Jacob to date. Research suggest that they may have been Paul and Katherine Coppenbarger, but no proof establishes this as of yet. Jacob b. 1-Nov-1769 d. 11-17-1841 DeWitt County buried at Hays/Coppenbarger Cemetery Catherine b. 19-1-1780 d. 4-25-1857 DeWitt County buried @ Hays Coppenbarger Cemetery Children: 1. 3. To answer a county line question that appeared on the Logan County list and to help all three new lists: The first thing to do is go to the Home page Illinois Genweb page Click on Illinois 1790-Present maps. Look at all of them and you will see how Illinois was divided and when. It is quite interesting. To find where all of my ancestors were back through the years, I printed a map of each. Put a pin prick on the Present day map, lined them up and started backwards. Results: My ancestors started out in Madison County, then Shelby, then Macon and then DeWitt without ever moving!!!!!! We are very lucky to have these maps on our state Gen web page most don't . Take advantage of them Earliene [email protected]

    3. Earliene... I do have the marriages of the Howell's up to 1870, but would like to know of any BOOKER's if you don't mind. Thank you Dale Sandra... If you wouldn't mind, I would like to know of any HOWELL and BOOKER marriages 1890 - 1910. I have YOUNG's from Shelby, Sandusky and Pickaway/Fairfield counties in OH, but am trying to figure out if any of them made it to Macon county, IL. I didn't find a connection on your posting yet anyway, but I'm going to keep looking since these YOUNG families were quite large. My Young's were immigrants from Germany to Berkeley county, VA. In a message dated 98-04-24 21:33:29 EDT, you write: << Still trying to find parents of Simon & Patience :( >> I've given up DRAKEs for a while and now that we have this nifty Macon County site, I'm looking for my MOOREs again. Daniel Moore was a prominent businessman in Decatur. He owned a cooper factory where barrels were mass produced, but one at a time by indivivual coopers. Lots of neat newspaper stuff on his business and life. Sure wish I could find his nephew, Harry MOORE. He was born in PA but his daddy George Washington Moore, took him and sisters to DeWitt Co. when they were very young. Harry signed Daniel's death certificate in 1922 and said he was just a short distance away (within 2 miles, I believe) when his step mother sued in De Witt Co. and he was witness against her. But we can't find the man to recognize him on the 1920 census. Too many Harry Moores and none where we want at least one to be. No apparent marriages, nothing. Soooo. Another extra terrestrial. Not born, not hatched, beamed down. Shirley

    2. Susan Potts
    3. Hi all, Wow! I cant believe how this list has taken off. :o) The story of this list is that Earliene wanted to get it going but our Macon County Coordinator Pat Hagemann is busy dealing with a very ill husband right now. As a state coordinator, also have my own two counties to maintain and being on the USGW Election committee the 75+ email messages which I have to answer everyday (you should see how many I delete because I dont have to answer them) are more than I can handle already. So, since I do not have a single root in Macon (mine are in Shelby), I have appointed Earliene Kaelin <[email protected]> as the list moderator in Pat's absence and I am going to unsubscribe. Please be good, no flaming allowed and all that stuff. :o) In case you need it, until Pat comes back to us the subscribe/unsubscribe info for this list can be found at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilgenweb/lists/maconlist.htm or email me, or Earliene and she will pass your mail on to me. 1. [ILMACON-L] PATTERSON, MACON CO., ILL., circa 1845-1900
    2. Wyndamere
    3. I am so glad to see that there is now a Macon Co. list. My Patterson family came from there, after moving from Pennsylvania, and I have never been able to trace them from Illinois back to Pennsylvania. I am researching the following Macon Co. names: PATTERSON, REED, CREEKMUR(MAN), BINGAMON. I am going to add some information from a recent posting I did to the Pennsylvania lists. Someone might find a clue. "In a message dated 98-04-12 13:37:37 EDT, [email protected] (Milbrey Otto BURGETT) wrote: << Washington PATTERSON was b. in Madison Co., OH in 1819 and > m. General information about my g-g-g-grandparents, Robert and Mary PATTERSON, comes from family records, the obituary of their son, George, my g-g- grdfather, and census records of 1850, 1860. Robert b. 1803 in Pennsylvania (1850 Census), DOD unknown Mary b. 1816 in Pennsylvania (1850 Census), d. 1902 Macon Co., Illinois (Macon Co. Death Index, p. 137; Reg. 3, p. 110) (I THINK this is her; need further confirmation). They were married ca 1830, prob. in Pennsylvania. Children: (1) William, b. 1831, Pennsylvania (1850 census). He was a Civil War vet, possibly the Private William Patterson who enlisted in 126th Co. B on 11 Aug, 1862, from Prairie, Illinois. Date of muster was 04 Sept., 1862. He died in Andalusia, Ill., 25 Nov. 1862. He was a resident of Buffalo. I have no information that he ever married. (2) David, b. 1833, Pennsylvania (1850 census). m. Mary (Polly) Yolton 16 Sept. 1852 (Vol. A, p. 44, Fayette Co., Ill.), d. aft. 1912 in Altamount, Illinois. (3) George, b. 1835 (obit. says 1833; census says 1835), Westmoreland Co., PA (George's obituary; census records). George m. Sarah Creekmur (man?) 23 Nov. 1857 in Sangamon Co., Illinois. He enlisted in (I think-needs further confirmation) Co. E, 130th Illinois Infantry, at Greenville, Vermilion Co., Ill. in April 1862. He was taken prisoner at Sabine Cross Roads Aug. 8, 1862, and spent the remainder of the war in Camp Tyler Prison in Texas. George emerged miraculously unscathed from 2 years in prisoner of war camp, and returned home to father 9 more children (in addition to the two he had before the war). He died 26 August 1912, and is buried with his wife at White Cemetery, Findley Shelby Co., Illinois. (4) Margaret, b. 1838, Pennsylvania, m. Richard R. Reagan, 27 March 1858, Macoupin co., Illinois (license 3093). (5) Henry, b. 1841 in OHIO, m. Lenora Sclez 07 Oct, 1861 in Kankakee, Ill. (Lic #6485, Book B) (6) Mary Ann, b. 1843, ILLINOIS, m. Lewis Townsend 18 Oct. 1863 in Fayette Co., Ill. (Book A, p. 84, Illinois marriage license index), d. aft 1912 in Brownstown Illinois. In 1850, the family was living in Fayette Co., Illinois, in North Township L (1850 census, p. 389). In 1860 the family was living in Elkhart Precinct, Logan Co., Illinois (1860 census, p. 293). One discrepancy involves the number of children Robert and Mary had. According to George's obituary, he not only had 11 children, but he, himself, was one of 11 children. I think the obituary is wrong, although the date of birth for his mother, Mary, conflicts, and could explain the discrepancy. In the 1850 census, Mary's birth year was 1816, making her only 15 when her son William was born. That's early enough to be a mother, for sure, but it's unlikely she had 3 or 4 more children before him, and no additional children appear in the census after they move to Illinois. Some children might have died, but I have found no other evidence except George's obituary. Supposedly, however, George had two brothers killed in the Civil War (William and ?), and one killed in the Mexican War (?). So it's possible there were more children. I just don't know yet. Hope this information helps someone. And if anyone has any information about this family, please let me know! Kathi Patterson 2 Charlton Street #14A New York NY 10014-4919
