You are the first to ask on the list although several have asked exactly the same thing in email. S-K Publications is the company that creates computer readable images from the census microfilms. Several folks here have donated to cover the costs of doing that for three censuses. Since it is already done they now offer the images on CD to anyone for $20. They are giving a combined 1840/1850 census on one CD. There will be one for the 1830 Sangamon census when that is done. In return for us paying to having it done S-K is donating a copy of the images to the USGenWeb Archives so they will be online and free to all, one of our purposes here. I personally would say if you only have one or two lines in the census use the free images online. If you have many lines as I do it is handy to have the CD at home. You can probably manipulate the images a little better if you own the CD but I haven't tried that with the online images so I'm not sure. I put a link to the census images on the main page of the web site.
