    1. [ILLOGAN-L] 1830 Sangamon Census
    2. The Sangamon County Genealogical Society has a transcription of the 1830 Federal Census of Sangamon County. It is 72 pages long and costs $7.50. It is indexed. Here's an example: page 24/158 [being the numbers on the left/right sides of the microfilm page] Robert Downing 1-1-1-0-0-1 1-0-0-0-1 Obviously, you need a guide to the census to determine what that means. In this case the first set of numbers has to do with males by age and the second set has to do with females by age. Some folks may have more digits than others. I haven't checked those numbers against Robert's children at the time in detail although my records indicate he would have had four at the time, two boys and two girls and this indicates three boys and one girl. In fact, it is just enough different that I would consider it might be the wrong Robert except that the next person on the list is his brother-in-law James Morrow and then there are the Buckles, Birks, Scroggins, Lucases and Turners on the same page. In fact, it makes my wonder if he had an older son we aren't aware of! It could also be an error of the census taker or an error in transcription. I believe this book would be a useful addition when studying the 1830 Sangamon County census images either online or on your copy of the CD or on microfilm.
