At the time I couldn't find the copy I had but now it has turned up. My example is from Company G of the 106th Infantry. They send you both pages, rather like the census images with a right and left page. Those at the top of the list are fairly easy to read -- a magnifying glass is useful -- but as they progress down the page [at least in my example] it gets worse to impossible near the bottom. Of course, I asked for the what turned out to be the first name on the page so perhaps they weren't too concerned about doing the bottom right for me. Here's what it tells me: Downing, George H., rank private, age 29, 5'10" tall, dark hair, blue eyes, fair complexion, married, a carpenter, born Pike County, OH, enrolled Aug 5, 1862, by Benj Williams, for three years, mustered in Sept 14, 1862, at Lincoln by Lt. ?, residence Lincoln, Logan County, IL, bunch of columns ignored, mustered out July 12, 1865, Pine Bluff, AR, by Lt. ?, remarks promoted Corpl. This is quite different from the National Archives records which were basically bimonthly check in sheets. I got a few more pages on my great great grandfather but only because he died and they had to fill out more forms, one certifying the death and saying he had been paid and the other inventorying his effects. I think the Illinois information is much more personal. It is also free. For details check out the state archives web site.
