The original name was Illinois Asylum for Feeble Minded Children. It was later changed to Lincoln State School and Colony. Still later was changed to Lincoln Developmental Center. It was originally supposed to be a residential training facility for the mentally retarded, but there were people placed there that didn't necessarily meet that criteria. I can remember growing up seeing the State School band marching in every local parade. They were actually pretty good.
