Before that there were Precincts. Sounds like your relatives passed through on their way to the free land in Kansas. There was no census between 1870 and 1880. Illinois stopped doing state censuses with the one in 1865. Perhaps someone can check the 1876 history to see if they are listed there for you. I am not at my desk at the moment or I would. There is a later history that could be checked for the Bennett family.
