This is an excerpt from the NGS newsletter regarding pictures that I thought you might find useful. Just a few simple rules, and everyone will count the people in their pictures the same way. 1. We'll count noses leftmost first, and rightmost last-anyone with two noses is automatically counted as only one person. 2. We'll decide the leftmost nose with a vertical line from bottom to top-say use the right edge of a sheet of paper as a way to run a vertical line across the picture. 3. What about two noses on the same vertical line? Count the one nearest the bottom of the page first. 4. What about babes in arms? Count the nose. 5. What about superfluous people like those that are in the picture, but are not "in" the picture? A nose is a nose; count it if you see it. 6. What if your ancestor was born without a nose? Don't send anyone the picture!! In all seriousness, the above method for counting people in a picture will leave all of us without a doubt as to who is who when sharing pictures with friends, relatives, and other researchers [see figure 1]..[1] http://www.NGSgenealogy.org/upfront/050104/web/fign1.jpg <http://www.ngsgenealogy.org/upfront/050104/web/fign1.jpg> BTW, this method is also being used to count and identify individuals in photographs contributed to the NGS Family Papers Collection.
