One of my main projects has been indexing the Lincon Herald. The earliest issues of the Herald are from April 1859. Some issues are missing up to June 1863, then there is a large portion missing from June 1863 to January 1866. The issues from 1867 seem to be faily complete. I have October through December of 1867 left to index before moving on to the next roll. The index is an every name index. That is, every Logan County name listed in the paper is included with reference to issue date, page number, column number and a brief descripton of the article in which the name was mentioned. Ten's of thousands of names are mentioned in articles ranging from participation in the Atlanta Fair to court cases. The completed portion, through 1866, of the index is available at Logan Conty Genealogical and Historical Society, Lincoln, IL. 114 N. Chicago St. Lincoln or call 217-732-3200. We purchased a copy of that roll of film as well for researchers like yourself. My original intention was to read the papers for information about my own ancestors but decided to pursue indexing all names to help researchers living a distance from Logan County and who had limited time resources to do this kind of reseach. A spin-off of this research has been a book I just published in January 2007, titled "Logan County, Illinois During the Civil War - The Early Years - As Printed in the Lincoln Herald. This book is a collection of of about 770 articles that gives the researcher a "flavor" of how the war was affecting life in Logan County. Included in the book is a collection of about 70-80 letters written by Civil War soldiers from Logan County to the Herald telling of their travels, training and active war experiences. The book is available also at LCG&HS for $25. Bill Donath, VP LCG&HS Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
