    3. IF he served from Illinois you can get his record [free] from the state archives. Be advised it is merely a page listing the names of the people in that unit but it contains a physical description. We had photographs but this had hair and eye color, height, complexion, marital status, occupation, place of birth, when joined and some other info, not particularly readable. You will also get the information on the people near him in the unit alphabetically which, in my case, provided me with both gggrandfathers who served in the 106th.
