    1. 1855 Logan County State Census

    3. Many thanks to Donna Copeland for her transcription. This was a tremendous undertaking on her part, and we really appreciate it. I found my Manning A. Bruce, but now I really have a mystery on my hands. It shows 4 white males 10-20. Manning did not have any boys on the 1850 Mason County Illinois Census, nor the 1860 and 1870 Logan County census, other than one step-son, who was a Campbell. Manning Bruce's brother Thomas, is listed next door to him in 1850 Mason County. I have not been able to locate other siblings for Manning Bruce, other than some females I suspect are his sisters but so far can not prove relationship. I just recently found quite a bit of informaton on Manning Bruce, including his obituary - thought I had him all straightened out - guess that's what I get for thinking!!! Christine

    3. I am not an expert on the census. My ancestors came to Logan early and stayed so there hasn't been an overwhelming need to consult the census for information. With that disclaimer, I believe the 4 white males were people living in his house but not necessarily his children. Could be other relatives, relatives of his spouse, maybe even hired hands. Could even be visitors who came for a month. I believe we put too much reliance on the census as 100% accurate. We don't know who the census taker talked to or even if the person was an adult who actually knew the answers. I'm willing to bet they asked the first warm body they found, even if it was a child or the neighbor who just moved there. When you had to travel those distances by horse you probably didn't come back if no one was home nor chase them down out in the field, just asked someone in the neighborhood who may or may not have known the actual facts.
