His house was the seat of government until the county seat was named at Postville. He served on the board of county commissioners in the 1830s, as captain of the militia, as Justice of the Peace, and as elected associate judge in the county from 1861 until he died. The farm consisted of a wooded patch, cornfields, wheat and a meadow, an orchard and a lane along Salt Creek to the barn lot. John Shoup was a judge and lawyer in Pennsylvania [not proved] and took a land claim in Logan County. He used his house for a court house. Mother often wondered what became of his books."
