He had been in failing health for some time. In early childhood he came with his parents to Logan County, where, in the year 1883, he was united in marriage with Mrs. Mary Goff Duncan, who survives him. To this union four children were born, three of whom survive him, as follows: James Coats, of Lake Fork; Mrs. Pearl Davis, of Cornland; and Mrs. Ruth Berry, living southwest of Mt. Pulaski. A son, Roy, died in infancy. He also leaves two stepsons, Elmer Duncan, of Decatur, and William Duncan, of Buffalo. Two sisters and one brother are left to mourn his departure, namely: Mrs. Prudy Matthews, of Buffalo Hart; Mrs. Nora Huffman, of Sanborn, Iowa; and John Coats, of Lake Fork. There remain four grandchildren, one great grandchild, and numerous other relatives. In his early manhood, he accepted Christ as his personal savior, becoming a member of the Church of God. "Colonel", as he was commonly called by his acquaintances, was a devoted husband, father, and a good neighbor, and had many friends. Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, July 25, at the Christian Church in Lake Fork, conducted by Rev. Brubeck, pastor of the Elkhart Christian Church. A male quartet, composed of George and Clarence Bowers, Lee Stults, and Harrison Masterson, sang "One by One", "Rock of Ages", and "Come Unto Me", with Miss Florence Stults at the piano.
