The following is what I have - I appreciate any guidance. My grandmother (fathers side) was a Stumpf (Florence) and I would love to be able to tie the Stumpf's back to Germany and make contact. We also have blindness in the family which is transmitted via the women and I think it's in the Stumpf line. Follwing is what I have on both families: STUMPF My uncle Nick said that the Stumpfs came from Heidleberg, Germany. At one time one of the Stumpfs was the burgomeister of a suburb of Heidelberg called Schresheim. Uncle Nick said that his grandfather married a girl of which the Stumpfs did not approve so they came to America to get away from the family. Formerly, the family was Catholic and his grandfather had a part in building the Catholic church in Lincoln. An altercation with the priest over the Stumpf pew in the church made the grandfather decide to leave the membership and they joined the Evangelical and Reformed Church of Lincoln. Shirley Margaret4 Hildreth (Margaret Amalia3 Stumpf, Nicholas P.2, Nicholas1) She married Vernon Uriah Van Hook 02 Dec 1949. MARTINI I am not sure of the correct spelling of Martini. If the name was spelled Martinie that is commonly the French spelling. Caroline (Grasser) Martini spoke both French and German fluently. The part of Germany she came from was under German rule and later under France. Hildreth's research of the name has it spelled as Martini. This may suggest an Italian background. The obituary in the paper for Caroline is "Caroline Martinie". In the Old Union Cemetery where Peter and Caroline Martini are buried, their tombstone reads "Martini". In another section of the same cemetery is a Martinie family. They are John T. Martinie (04/21/1838 - 04/03/1876) and Elizabeth Martinie (04/30/1836 - 03/13/1914). This may just be a coincidence, or just possibly John T. and Peter were related and one or the other of them changed the spelling of their last name. Descendants of Peter Martini Generation No. 1 1.
