    2. Cheryl, Yes there were two. But that's OK. Yes the freebies that Ancestry.com grants from time to time does really slow it down. Those of us who pay $163.17 a year to have a subscription to Ancestry and use it virtually every day of the year are not real happy about the slowdown. I wish they could figure out how to have separate servers or something for the freebies so not to inconvenience the paid subscribers. I know I will probably get some flack on this but that is how I feel. 3. I thought they cut their subscription prices.

    3. As a paid subscriber, I wrote exactly that (separate server) to ancestry, also telling them I expected a reply. HAH!! Several days later, and no answer yet. What does that tell you? It was soooo frustrating! i tried six times to update a previous family tree story.... NOTHING! GRRRRR!!!!! Cheryl Kale gedgell@flash.net wrote: OK. 3. I find Ancestry painful to search. I gave it about an hour, looking for one person. I already have the information, just checking to see if Ancestry has improved their search. I never found it although I have to think it is there. 2. Cheryl, While I am not trying in any way to get more folks to subscribe, I will say that I find Ancestry.com to be very helpful mostly for census but also for the birth, marriage and death records, military, immigration and other records. I still use Heritage Quest some but I wouldn't be doing genealogy today without Ancestry.com even if I do complain about the cost. You have to learn how to massage the search engines. They don't always register the spelling shown on a record correctly. But then we know how is it spelled and they don't. 3. I think it is a function of what you are looking for. Each service seems to cater to a different aspect. I once read an article which explained the main focus of each major database and it was clear why Ancestry was not particularly useful to me. I have not been able to find that article again or I'd give you the summary. One of the classes I am taking at IGHR involves online search engines so I may have some further information to impart in a few weeks. I do not mean to suggest in any way that Ancestry is not great for many people. I used Heritage Quest for census information. Immigration is not one of my needs...unless someone has the records for 1740ish when those two problem lines arrived in the US by UFO. After the RW, War of 1812 and CW my ancestors were always the wrong age to be in the military for wars -- and they were farmers. My father's record is available free from the government, what is left after the fire. [available to surviving children and surviving spouses free -- available to others for a fee I believe] Cheryl Rothwell
