    3. Someone asked me about genealogy web site building, that is, when you want to put your own genealogy online yourself rather than on a site like Rootsweb or Family Tree Maker. You want to share but you want to retain absolute control over how that is done. Of course, you do have a great deal of control over how Rootsweb uses your material but not in the formatting and such and you can't add pictures and other items. Keep in mind you have to pay for the web hosting whereas the others are free. It is easy to get web space for $5 per month, generally paid on an annual basis. You just have to be careful that the web host you select provides all the support you need -- and that depends on the software you chose. The more advanced support MySQL which the more advanced genealogy web programs use. Be advised that the genealogy web programs that allow you create dynamic sites are more advanced -- but they also pretty much do everything for you too. It is completely possible to do many of the things in HTML but it requires you to know something about HTML. There are programs for that too. I use TMG, The Master Genealogist, to keep my genealogy. I can output pages from it in HTML or web format which can be used to make basic web pages. Other genealogy programs can do the same. If your genealogy program allows you to print to .pdf you can use .pdf in basic web pages too but you still need to set up the basic page in HTML. I am aware of two programs which specifically create dynamic web sites with lots of bells and whistles from your genealogy. One is Second Site. It was designed to work with TMG databases so if you don't use TMG as your genealogy software it won't work for you. The other is TNG, The Next Generation, which builds dynamic websites. I found its set up which allows you to enter cemetery maps, stones and locations quite interesting. Both of these programs appear to be geared so the web novice as well as the more advance user can create web sites. There are also some basic programs which create basic web sites by converting GEDCOMS to HTML. While searching for some links to GEDCOM to HTML programs I came across this page: http://help.surnameweb.org/tutorial/index.html It has some good basic information. 3. Cheryl has given you some excellent background on web-site building. I got my start several years ago by reading Cyndi Howells' primer on this topic. Check Cyndi's List for HTML. There are also sites which give you a rundown on the various HTML codes and what they do. You are invited to visit my site which at this point is created solely with HTML I coded myself, which is a testimonial to how easy it is. The URL for my site is in my signature. The site, BTW, is a part of the "deal" I get from Earthlink - 10 megabytes of free space as a part of the monthly fee (I am not sure Earthlink does this now - I joined another ISP before it was bought by Earthlink). You will also need a program - an FTP tool - to upload your pages to the web site. I use Word Perfect as my word processor and it will covert a document to HTML in a matter of seconds. One feature I like about this is it will "hyperlink" the footnote superscripts directly with the footnote - click on the footnote number and it will take you right to the note. So far I have only one page like this one on my site, but I am putting the finishing touches on another. Finally, I have just parted with some big bucks to purchase software which will allow me to put some of my databases on line in a mode that will allow any searcher to manipulate and search the data. One of the databases I now have on line is of PENCE/PENSE/BENTZ (other variants) marriages. Right now this database is "static" - that is, it is simply a list of marriages sorted on the first name of the Pence, et al, person. There are presently 3,500 marriages and I have added 2,000 more. If I can master this new software, I will be able to - in effect - put the database itself on line, not just output from it. The use will be able, for example, to sort on any column - Groom or bride surname, groom or bride given name, date, place, etc. Or so it is claimed. We'll see. So far it has been a steep learning curve. If you have questions about my site, do holler. Richard A. Pence 3211 Adams Ct. 3. Even if you use that silly Word you can create documents and convert them to HTML... The finest people use WordPerfect though. It has been doing the conversions for a lot longer than Word has. I did one with the footnote hyperlinks in 1993 that is still online. It was pretty gee whiz at the time. I remember they gave me a couple days and it took me about 20 minutes. I scanned it, OCRed to WordPerfect and printed to HTML. I didn't mention this because the conversions are rather clunky, heavy on the code these days and sometimes a MAJOR pain to correct. However, it can be done. You can also do it with Excel spreadsheets. In fact, the 1862 Military Census was done with Excel by Mary Ann. Richard's message reminded me -- and I think this is what he is referring to -- Cyndi has a Genealogy Home Page Construction Kit at http://www.cyndislist.com/construc.htm . Cyndi pretty much covers everything. 3. I have used this web site for a number of years: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/ If one's WordProcessing converts pages to html, you can extract your information put it in a text form, do a file open and put it into your word processing program. When you have what you want and how you want it, you can then to a file save to html format. Doing it this way an ftp program to transfer the data to the web site. Your first page will also be index.htm or index.html. There are a number of free html editor's on the web too. With freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com, there is a help desk so you can ask questions quite freely. Legacy Family Tree (basic version is free which is what I use for genealogy) will also convert data to html. But personally, I still perfer to control my own and how it looks. I am fortunate enough to have a copy of Mircrosoft Home page and like its features. On the new list for Legacy Family Tree, there are often discussions on creating html and how to put it up on the web. Do others of you have pages on the web so persons who are thinking about it can see what different things people have done? Mine is at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~joanlund/ Joan Cheryl Rothwell <[email protected]> wrote:Someone asked me about genealogy web site building, that is, when you want to put your own genealogy online yourself rather than on a site like Rootsweb or Family Tree Maker.
