CHANCERY NOTICE STATE OF ILLINOIS, LOGAN COUNTY Of the May Term of the Logan County Circuit Court, A.D. 1898. Axariah W. Beaver vs. Jackson Preston, Ruth Green, Susan Bateman, Harry Lee and Maggie Burnhoffs. In Chancery. Bill to correct mistake in deed and reform the same. Hi there. I know only the folks identified [and confirmed by two of them]. I don't know the Watts and Daubard though. I thought perhaps it was a Christian Church event. Are the Watts members of the Christian Church? I think this picture is probably from 1930 based on the ages of the identified people. It's very interesting that you have this picture too. [also makes me think it is a church picture] Are the Watts related to Lela? Is she in the picture? I never saw her less than early 50s and I don't recall a picture of her younger. There's really no way to find out who they are unless people can identify them. Cheryl Rothwell On 6/3/07, treequester@bellsouth.net <treequester@bellsouth.net> wrote: > > I have that picture too. I have that picture too. I'd thought it was a reunion of the Watts family but don't know really. The seated man on the first row, far right looks like Jake Watts and the couple on the far left look like Cleveland and Vashti Watts. The oldest woman there, seated first row on the right could be Mary Elizabeth Brown Watts Daubard (she kept outliving them!) How do we find out who they really are? This has made me so conscious of putting names on my own photos! Darlene
Thanks Cheryl, I tried to change my profile but had no luck. Try going to that web page http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.michigan.counties.berrien/3231/mb.ashx [or any message board page where you are signed in] and at the top right hand side click on My Public Profile. See what you can do there. I guess Ancestry wants to become "my space" for genealogy or something. I personally would not provide any information to them. Go to Yahoo or Hotmail or AIM or Gmail and set up a free email address that you use just for posting to such places. I am not an expert on Rootsweb. It seems to be an ever changing environment since it was purchased by Ancestry. Cheryl Rothwell
Cheryl: I need your expertise on Roots I had have several responses that stated my e-mail address wasn't available, and one that stated he went to ancestry to get it. I finally got around to checking out why and tried to correct it. ************************************************************************************************* See example below. when I hit buttonsvh http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.michigan.counties.berrien/3231/mb.ashx Response: buttonsvh has chosen to use Ancestry's connection service to remain anonymous. The connection service is a premium service from Ancestry, which requires basic membership with a minimal subscription fee. Clicking the "Go to Ancestry Profile" button below will take you to buttonsvh's profile on Ancestry where you can click the "Contact this person" link to send a private, anonymous message through the connection service. ******************************************************************************************** I guess when I set up my Root's account I stated I wanted to remain anonymous, anyway that is what it states. I went in to my Account and tried to see what I needed to do to have my address shown, but had no luck. The thing is I don't have a paid subscription to Ancestry. I am one of those people that pray for free access, because I can't afford a subscription. I use Roots because of the generosity of others allow me to do my genealogy. So how do I get my e-mail address to show for the people aren't inconvienced when they want to contact me directly with the information? Thanks Vickie
If you have ancestors who were in PA early, 1700s, the PA Archives are free at Footnote. It's hard to search there too because you cannot search for "Abram Lucas" and "rangers" or whatever. Unless they are charging you by the hour I do not see the point in making it less efficient. One of the things I like about Footnote is they give you the whole exact page, none of the cuts of a section of a page like Ancestry does. Heritage Quest also provides whole pages.
Please ignore this, I got through using Google search. I think it is a function of what you are looking for. Each service seems to cater to a different aspect. I once read an article which explained the main focus of each major database and it was clear why Ancestry was not particularly useful to me. I have not been able to find that article again or I'd give you the summary. One of the classes I am taking at IGHR involves online search engines so I may have some further information to impart in a few weeks. I do not mean to suggest in any way that Ancestry is not great for many people. I used Heritage Quest for census information. Immigration is not one of my needs...unless someone has the records for 1740ish when those two problem lines arrived in the US by UFO. After the RW, War of 1812 and CW my ancestors were always the wrong age to be in the military for wars -- and they were farmers. My father's record is available free from the government, what is left after the fire. [available to surviving children and surviving spouses free -- available to others for a fee I believe] Cheryl Rothwell
Cheryl, While I am not trying in any way to get more folks to subscribe, I will say that I find Ancestry.com to be very helpful mostly for census but also for the birth, marriage and death records, military, immigration and other records. I still use Heritage Quest some but I wouldn't be doing genealogy today without Ancestry.com even if I do complain about the cost. You have to learn how to massage the search engines. They don't always register the spelling shown on a record correctly. But then we know how is it spelled and they don't. Did everyone see what the Family History Library/FamilySearch Center has replaced Ancestry with? I think Ancestry did us a favor by withdrawing. I have subscriptions to Footnote and Godfrey and I get Heritage Quest/Pro Quest through my library. I have not tried the last two. More Web Site Service Providers Team with FamilySearch from Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter by Dick Eastman FamilySearch is announcing still more content providers that will be offering data through local FamilySearch Centers near you and through the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. Note that all the providers listed below except for two have been announced previously in this newsletter and elsewhere. The new additions are: Heritage Quest/ProQuest and Kindred Konnections. The following announcement was written by FamilySearch (formerly Genealogical Society of Utah), a nonprofit organization sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: Popular web sites available for free through local Family History Centers SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH-FamilySearch has announced the addition of more popular online genealogy services available for free through worldwide family history centers. The expanded services are in keeping with FamilySearch's goal to provide increased access to records that will assist individuals in family history pursuits. New resources include: Footnote (www.footnote.com) Footnote is a subscription-based website that features searchable, original documents that provide users a view of the events, places and people that shaped the American nation and the world. The site will have over 25 million digital images by the end of 2007. Footnote is currently working with FamilySearch to index the American Revolutionary War Pension files. Additional projects with FamilySearch are under development. Individuals with Footnote subscriptions will be able to sign in with the same Footnote username and password they use at home in order to save, annotate, and upload content. Godfrey Memorial Library (www.godfrey.org) Godfrey Memorial Library has an extensive collection of essential resources to assist genealogical and historical research. Resources include newspapers, city and business directories, vital records, printed census records, state, county, and local histories, as well as numerous family histories, family bible records, and service and pension records. Heritage Quest/ProQuest (www.heritagequestonline.com) Heritage Quest online includes the complete set of U.S. Federal Census images from 1790 to 1930 including names and indexes for many of the sets. Users will be able to find people and places located in over 20,000 published family and local histories and PERSI, an index of over 1.9 million genealogy and local history articles. Other online databases include Revolutionary War Pension, Bounty-Land Warrant Application files, and the Freedman Bank Records. Access to this service will be limited to 1,400 family history centers in North America. Patrons should contact their local family history center to see if this service is available. Family history center directors should contact Family History Center Support with questions. Kindred Konnections (www.kindredkonnections.com) Kindred Konnections has over 230 million pedigree linked names with submitter information. The online pedigrees are not merged, but maintained by individual patrons. There are additional databases of birth, marriage, death, and census records that are automatically searched along with the pedigree linked data. Segments of pedigrees can be downloaded. World Vital Records (www.worldvitalrecords.com) World Vital Records provides access to research helps and has a wide variety of international records, including more than 60 parish registers, Scottish death records, UK marriages, and Irish prisoner records. There are more than 300 newspapers with 100,000 pages added a month, and over 500 online databases, including vital, military, land, pension records, reference materials, family histories, maps, gazetteers, and international coops. With the recent Quintin Publications partnership, World Vital Records will soon have more than 10,000 databases online. At least one new database is added every business day. FamilySearch (formerly Genealogical Society of Utah) is a nonprofit organization sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. FamilySearch maintains the world's largest repository of genealogical resources accessed through FamilySearch.org, the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, and over 4,500 family history centers in 70 countries.
I find Ancestry painful to search. I gave it about an hour, looking for one person. I already have the information, just checking to see if Ancestry has improved their search. I never found it although I have to think it is there. I have added a page on the Lake Fork Predestinarian Baptists to the web site along with about 15 obits. I still have a backlog of nearly 100 obits. Every time I think I am making progress I find more I have stored. Most are from Bill Scroggin who has tirelessly collected obits for all of his relatives [and a lot of mine]. If you see problems let me know. The first mystery picture on the Mt. Pulaski Township Historical Society web site remains a mystery. No one had a clue. Take one last look and see if you have any ideas. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmpths/ I know that at least a handful of people in that picture must be living today in addition to the two I can identify. A second mystery picture will go up later this week. It has already been identified by -- get this -- a 95 year old woman who is one of the two surviving people in the picture. Can you imagine identifying a picture from more than 75 years ago from memory? When you are 95? Amazing! Cheryl Rothwell
I thought they cut their subscription prices.
Cheryl, Yes there were two. But that's OK. Yes the freebies that Ancestry.com grants from time to time does really slow it down. Those of us who pay $163.17 a year to have a subscription to Ancestry and use it virtually every day of the year are not real happy about the slowdown. I wish they could figure out how to have separate servers or something for the freebies so not to inconvenience the paid subscribers. I know I will probably get some flack on this but that is how I feel. I HATE the new mailing list software. If this is a duplicate I'm sorry. It bounced some, sent some through. Ancestry.com has made access to its military records collection free through June 6 to commemorate the anniversary of D-Day, when the Normandy invasion began in 1944. You can both search and download record images (you'll need to register with the site before viewing records). As everyone runs to Ancestry expect the internet version of busy signals. Chose a time when you think fewer people are trying.
