    3. Oh definitely. In my family, prior to my generation, we didn't kiss our cousins, aunts, etc. They were incredibly reserved and, I confess, I am somewhat reluctant to have someone outside the very immediate family kiss me. Hugs are ok. <g> My husband's family was very kissy. <g> I have tons of first cousin marriages and more second cousin marriages. For my cousins who married locally I can prove they are related to their spouses. <g> To be fair, in 1840 you had to marry what was available. Cheryl

    3. >Elsewhere, a kissing cousin is one who is so distantly related that there are no taboos against dating him/her< Where I was raised in Central Illinois, I used to think that it was someone you knew to be related somehow, but it was distant enough that you did not know exactly how! That probably fits into the above. But then our family was more outwardly reserved, not of the kissing type except among a few of the older women! So few would have met your first definition. >From my genealogy of both German and Scotch Irish family ancestors, I have found several second cousin and a few first cousin marriages. So I guess that is another possible definition of the term -- cousins who married each other.

I always have to ask this question, because the definition of "kissing cousin" widely varies. What would you consider to be a "kissing cousin." Apparently it depends on where you grew up. Some places, particularly the American South, a "kissing cousin" is one so closely related that you always greet him/her with a big "buss." Elsewhere, a kissing cousin is one who is so distantly related that there are no taboos against dating him/her. Which is yours? Richard P. Fairfax, VA

That is, two or more people claiming ownership of the same property. I suspect the question of ownership came up when a property was to be sold. The legal description of the property is included in the Sheriff Sale report. The courts apparently settled the question in favor of the contestant with the most evidence of ownership. There are hundreds of these in the Herald. I suspect it is a result of the burning of the Court House records in 1857. The original court files would probably be at the IRAD at ISU in Normal, Illinois. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Are you a descendant of Abraham Lucas? I am, twice. Some of my cousins are three times. A great many people with ancestors in south Logan County are. Well then, Bob's your cousin. Bob Dole that is. Who knew? Abraham Lucas had a sister Sarah who married Daniel Ulrey. They are Bob's 4g grandparents. http://www.wargs.com/political/dole.html And that isn't just any genealogy but one by William Addams Reitwiesner, a genealogist recognized for his royal genealogies, medieval genealogies and his genealogies of American political figures. It highly likely this is an accurate genealogy. Decendents of Abraham and Sarah's father Thomas are grateful to her because she sued the estate of her father claiming another brother tried to cheat her out of her share. In the ensuing court case all the descendants of Thomas, their locations and other information on them are given, proving the lines quite nicely. Unfortunately we never learned his first wife's name. 3. I can't promise anything. They are not in my possession or control. No one has the records in a drawer where they can just go to them and read them. It's an involved process. The records of the church the Lake Fork group came from also survive -- or did 40 years ago. It's amazing to me that such records were even kept since many other churches either didn't keep them or didn't preserve them. Many of those people are my ancestors but I also have ancestors who were Methodist ministers in the area in 1830. There are almost no records of them and none of the congregations. Valorie, the successor to this group is the Primitive Baptists. You might want to check http://www.carthage.lib.il.us/community/churches/primbap/pbl.html I know he has a full copy of these records although it is not listed. He also has a transcript of the church records of the church in Ohio from whence they came and he may well have information on the Indiana church. Cheryl Rothwell

    3. Julie, A sheriff sale, in general, is a sale of property (usually abandoned) for the payment of back taxes. However, I have seen them in some localities to settle other debts (court cases) or to settle estates. Laws vary by state and county and, of course, over time. 3. I finally got a chance to look at the records and wow -- are they amazing! Heartfelt thanks to those who worked on this project. My 4G-grandfather was Charles Harper, who apparently joined the church in 1833 and is listed as preacher or moderator from then until at least February 1834, when the scanned notes end. I understand that the remaining notes may be too fragile to scan, but I was wondering if those who have the notes could tell me how much longer Charles Harper remained moderator. My Harpers came to Illinois around 1829; prior to that Charles Harper preached at the Little Pigeon Creek Baptist Church in Spencer County, Indiana. Those records also survive (or at least a transcript) and are online at the Spencer County site. Abe Lincoln's father attended this church at that time. Charles Harper is said to have performed the marriage ceremony of Abe's sister, Sarah Lincoln, to Aaron Grigsby.
