    3. The Tribune is a pain in the rear. They only keep those available a short period. I saw this on another list referencing a WGN story. It is unclear whether these are the documents or an abstract. The law remains 75 years on birth and 20 on death so one would assume they are abstracts but you just never know. As downstaters have always known, Cook County is a law until itself. <g> I will be discussing this with the Logan County Clerks today and tomorrow to see if they have any such plans. They have already microfilmed a lot of old files. 2. This story was sent to you by: Cheryl Kale Sorry, List! Apparently the URL got change because the Trib archived the article. Here it is. Cheryl -------------------- Old county records being put online -------------------- By Jason Meisner, Tribune staff reporter: Tribune staff reporter Mary Owen contributed to this report September 7 2007 Professional genealogists and people interested in researching their family tree will soon be able to access key records from home instead of ordering by mail or traipsing down to a musty office in the Loop, Cook County Clerk David Orr said Thursday. I just wanted you to know that there was a press release last Thursday; BMD will be placed online in January, if all goes as planned! I knew a project was in the works, but I had no idea it was this massive. The records have already been digitized, and are being loaded to the server at the rate of ONE MILLION per week! Unreal! I sure hope it doesn't crash. On the main page of the Logan County ILGenWeb is a link to: LOGAN COUNTY PRINTED RESOURCES - A Must for the Serious Researcher You really should check that out when looking for Logan County resources. The late Penny Husler put that together and those things don't change. She tells where each resource can be found.

    3. Hi All, Newberry is great, as Cheryl Rothwell said. However, their online catalogue does NOT contain very much for Logan County. Keep in mind that their online catalogue only contains about 20% of their holdings. So there is probably MUCH more there! It is HUGE! I would advise people to email the reference desk; ask what else they have that might help your individual situation. This staff will help in whatever way they can. I'm here if they can't help you. I'll be going there again in a week or two. This list has given me a lot of help, and I would like to give back. BUT, you can't find what isn't there, and I honestly don't want to go on a wild goose chase! It's an all day trip for me, and I have a lot I want to look at for my own lines. We all need to work together. Cheryl Kale --------------------------------- Building a website is a piece of cake. Yahoo! Small Business gives you all the tools to get online.

    3. Personally I think you should post your obits [or anything else] in several places. Web sites come and go. If you spread them around there is a greater chance at least one copy will survive. Bill Scroggin, who has done so many obits, has them on the message boards, mailing lists, archives, newspaper archives and, of course, the Logan County site. This is a good thing.

    3. I have not found much that I wanted in those papers. I find interesting Logan stuff [not necessarily individual to a family stuff] in another newspaper archive out of New York. In the old days they picked up all sorts of stuff and printed it in local papers. http://fultonhistory.com/Fulton.html Here's an example: A Mr. Edmonds, of Mt. Pulaski, Illinois, has invented a "horological candle," Is is rocked by means of weights and a pendulum, upon the principle of a clock. It will run twenty-four hours with one winding up. Utica, NY, Daily Gazette, late Feb 1852. I plan to pass that on to the Mt. Pulaski Historical Society and see if they know anything about it. Cheryl Rothwell

    3. I tried using the newspaperarchive file - without much luck. Me thinks that I just do not know how to use this particular search engine. I seemed to have had better success with the advanced search features. Yet at that, I was not able to narrow the search to the newspapers in Logan County which leads me to thinking that they just are not on the site. 2. Yes, it's time, trust me. I'll be honest, we call much of that 'antics with semantics', and no one wins. After 30 years of math teaching, with the turning-in of a late homework paper often escalating into a Supreme Court arguement . . . my eyes/ears say it's time. I'm in my 5th year with Ancestry, the subscription is my Christmas present from an understanding spouse. I use it by the hour, especially the Census records. I know a search-engine when I see it, and Ancestry's is good. Once you get the parameters & quirks sorted-out, it's very good. In my opinion the code-witing is brilliant, and in a non-Defense Dept venue, too. >From 1750 all the way up to 1930 with my direct German/Swiss 6-gens, meeting 6th Cousins online; and as an amusement sorting out a bunch of Soucie (speaking of being able to easily explore spelling variations - and horrible handwriting) shirttail relatives who came with Fr. Chinquey from Quebec to St. Anne's, Kankakee County & environs. And learned a lot of history I never knew, even growing-up only an hour north of there. I've made some miracle-saves, German and French (confirmed by different sources, of course), just because of the tenuous leads I can follow/exhaust. Because of some recent health problems . . . without it I would be nowhere. I still hope to visit the Newberry, only a hour METRA ride away, but not until I can do it in better shape. Ditto a visit to the Ft. Wayne library. And, a visit to Shenandoah County, VA. As you can tell, I'm dangling some very important juicy carrots under my own nose to speed my recovery. Keep up the Good Gen Work -- I really appreciate learning from experts, and I put both of you in that category. This is a GREAT LIST to subscribe to!
