Author: WFlemming Surnames: Stumpf / Martini Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.illinois.counties.logan/1548.2.1.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Joan, I am stuck on these two families who spent a lot of time in Lincoln. The following is what I have - I appreciate any guidance. My grandmother (fathers side) was a Stumpf (Florence) and I would love to be able to tie the Stumpf's back to Germany and make contact. We also have blindness in the family which is transmitted via the women and I think it's in the Stumpf line. Follwing is what I have on both families: STUMPF My uncle Nick said that the Stumpfs came from Heidleberg, Germany. At one time one of the Stumpfs was the burgomeister of a suburb of Heidelberg called Schresheim. Uncle Nick said that his grandfather married a girl of which the Stumpfs did not approve so they came to America to get away from the family. Formerly, the family was Catholic and his grandfather had a part in building the Catholic church in Lincoln. An altercation with the priest over the Stumpf pew in the church made the grandfather decide to leave the membership and they joined the Evangelical and Reformed Church of Lincoln. Descendants of Nicholas Stumpf Generation No. 1 1. Nicholas1 Stumpf was born 04 Apr 1849 in Germany, and died 11 Nov 1900 in Lincoln, Illinois. He married Elizabeth Erdman. She died 1895. Margaret Amalia3 Stumpf (Nicholas P.2, Nicholas1) was born 16 May 1902, and died 22 Mar 1986. She married Charles Edward Hildreth 04 Jul 1925. He was born 27 Apr 1884, and died 21 Oct 1968. Shirley Margaret4 Hildreth (Margaret Amalia3 Stumpf, Nicholas P.2, Nicholas1) She married Vernon Uriah Van Hook 02 Dec 1949. MARTINI I am not sure of the correct spelling of Martini. If the name was spelled Martinie that is commonly the French spelling. Caroline (Grasser) Martini spoke both French and German fluently. The part of Germany she came from was under German rule and later under France. Hildreth's research of the name has it spelled as Martini. This may suggest an Italian background. The obituary in the paper for Caroline is "Caroline Martinie". In the Old Union Cemetery where Peter and Caroline Martini are buried, their tombstone reads "Martini". In another section of the same cemetery is a Martinie family. They are John T. Martinie (04/21/1838 - 04/03/1876) and Elizabeth Martinie (04/30/1836 - 03/13/1914). This may just be a coincidence, or just possibly John T. and Peter were related and one or the other of them changed the spelling of their last name. Descendants of Peter Martini Generation No. 1 1. Peter1 Martini was born 06 Aug 1831 in Luremburg, Germany, and died 25 Jan 1898 in Lincoln, Illinois. He married Caroline Christiane Graesser 12 Oct 1861 in Babcock's Grove, Illinois, daughter of Johann Christian Graesser. She was born 17 Oct 1838 in Werdau, Germany, and died 04 Apr 1913 in Lincoln, Illinois. Children of Peter Martini and Caroline Graesser are: 2 i. Amalia Kungunde2 Martini, born 17 Jun 1875 in Lincoln, Illinois; died 08 May 1934 in Lincoln, Illinois. 3 ii. Christopher Martini, born 1865 in Illinois. 4 iii. Sophie Martini, born 1867 in Illinois. 3. I am posting this because I have noted a great many Logan County residents left for Kansas after the Civil War. My ancestors who went soon came back but other relatives stayed. Sumner County which is in the southeast corner next to Harper County was the one for all the people I've run across. I have no idea why. It does explain why their next move was into Oklahoma. I thought this information might be useful to someone. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 26, 2007 LARGEST ONLINE COLLECTION OF IMAGES AND DOCUMENTS FROM KANSAS HISTORY TO BE LAUNCHED OCTOBER 16 Former Kansas Governor John Carlin to be on hand at launch event TOPEKA, KS—The Kansas Historical Society announced that former Kansas Governor John Carlin, who served as Archivist of the United States from 1995-2005, will return to Topeka for the launch of Kansas Memory on October 16. Kansas Memory is the Historical Society's newest online offering, featuring the largest collection of photographs and manuscripts from Kansas history on the Internet, and can be accessed at kansasmemory.org. Carlin and other state dignitaries will be on hand at the Historical Society, 6425 SW 6th Avenue, for a launch event at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, October 16. The launch coincides with American Archives Month. Kansas Memory offers unprecedented online access to Kansas history and includes thousands of items from the Kansas Historical Society's collections of photographs, letters, diaries, and other historic items. Users can browse, search, or share images, and will eventually be able to purchase high-resolution versions online. The "My Memory" section allows users to customize a personal space, save searches, and create scrapbooks of items. Although it would be impossible to add every single item in the Kansas Historical Society's collection to Kansas Memory, the Historical Society will actively continue to add images as part of its goal to make Kansas history more accessible to everyone. Visitors to the site can listen to dramatic readings in the Kansas Memory podcasts and subscribe to web feeds for the latest content. Teachers will find the multi-faceted browse feature especially helpful as it includes topics that help meet Kansas and U.S. history standards. Kansas Memory was developed in part with funding from the Information Network of Kansas. During the month of October, Kansas Press Association member newspapers will have access to a special collection of photos from Kansas Memory for use in their publications. This partnership between the Association and the Kansas Historical Society celebrates National Newspaper Week, October 7-13. When the Index for the Lincoln Herald is prepared, there is no attempt to tell who was the defendant in each suit. All names involved in the suit were listed. That leaves some of the enjoyment of the search to the researcher. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
