    2. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilcumber/ilctybnd/ In 1839 Logan County was formed from Sangamon County. If you go to the above web site and click on 1837 and then 1839 you'll see this clearly. But it was not the Logan County we know today. If your research is in the north and northeast part of the county this is important. Everyone else can tune out. <g> In 1841 Logan gained more land from Tazwell County. In 1847 a small part of DeWitt County became Logan and the county was complete. Mt. Pulaski was the county seat then, NOT Lincoln [which was even a town yet]. 1. Re: [ILLOGAN-L] Hoblit - Lucas
    2. Hi Shauna, This is what I have on Sarah Hoblit's siblings: Johannes Michael Hoblit and Anna Katrina (Van) Viegle had ten children: 1. Elizabeth Hoblit - b. 1771/2 in Fayette Co., KY/d. 26AUG1839 in Clinton Co., OH. She is buried in the Gaddis cemetery, NE of Wilmington, OH. She married Timothy Bennett in Westmoreland Co., PA in 1789. They had 14 children. 2. Boston (Sebastian) Hoblit - b.13FEB1774 in Fayette Co., KY; d. 03MAR1859 in Bellbrook, Green Co., OH. He is buried in the Primitive Baptist Cem., Bellbrook, OH. He served in War of 1812. Boston's 1st wife was Sarah Elizabeth Middleton - were married 1793/94 in OH; second wife was Lydia Sayre - m. 1833 in OH. They had ten children. 3. Mary/Polly Magdalena Hoblit - b.25OCT1778 in Westmoreland Co., PA. She was christened 19FEB1779 in Zion Lutheran Church in Geensburgh, PA. She married Randall/Randolph Walker in Lexington, KY 14JUL1796. They had 10 chldren. 4. Katherine Hoblit - b. 1780 in Westmoreland Co., PA. She married William Abbott in 1797 in Woodrord Co., KY. They had 11 children. 5. John Hoblit - b.26MAR1781 in Westmoreland Co., PA/d. 05SEP1844 in Atlanta, Logan Co., IL. He is buried in Roach Cem., Logan Co., IL. He married Mellicent Seward in 1802 in OH. He also was christened in Zion Lutheran Ch. 28DEC1781. Mellicent was a 1st cousin to Abe Lincoln's Seward. He came to IL in 1826 on prospecting tour. John and Mellicent had 11 children. 6. Margaret Hoblit - b.1782 in Westmoreland Co., PA and died ? in Clinton Co., OH. She married a Robert Shields, 23MAY1809, in Highland Co., OH. They had 9 children. 7. William Deacon Hoblit - b.19MAY1783 in Westmoreland Co., PA/ d.13DEC1870 in Clinton Co., OH. He is buried in the Baptist Cem., in Port William, OH. Wm. was another child christened in Zion Luth. Church in Greensburgh, PA. He married Margaret Shields in Highland Co., OH, 30MAR1809 - they had 12 children. 8. Christoph Samuel Hoblit - b.08APR1785 in Westmoreland Co., PA/ died young. Was christened in Zion Luth. Church. 9. Sarah Hoblit - b.04JUN1786 in Westmoreland Co., PA/d.13JUL1859 in Logan Co., IL. She is your ancestor who married Thomas Lucas. 10. David Hoblit - b.08DEC1787 in Westmoreland Co., PA/d.28FEB1869 in Worth Co., MO. Was christened in Zion Luth Ch. in PA. Served in War of 1812. 1st marriage was to Martha Wilson 01MAR1811 in Highland Co., OH/2nd marriage was to Celia Kelly 12MAR1840 in MO. He moved to MO in 1839 - had 11 children w/1st wife and 1 with the second wife. Anna Katrina at one time weighed over 300 lbs. - and that tendency toward being heavy seems to have carried through on some of the descendants. Johannes Michael was quite an adventurer - notice how much they moved around - at one time someone mentioned that they first lived in KY before Daniel Boone blazed a trail. He served in the RW in the Invalid Div. of the PA militia. I guess they ended up having 99 grandchildren! Hope this helps a bit - Marlyn

    2. Hi! I have no idea as to how Roach Cemetery ended up with that name - a Hoblit donated the original land for it, I was told. It used to be called Roach Chapel Cemetery when we first checked it out a number of years ago - John Hoblit and Mellicent Seward, two of my husband's ancestors are buried there. It is a very old cemetery - one has to travel there via gravel roads - yet is has been maintained quite well. Generally, I think I would check for your Roach name, if from that area, in the Atlanta portion of Logan Co. - or even DeWitt Co., as it just about borders that area. Wish that I could tell you more! Have been told that there is a small library in Atlanta, IL - and that the elderly lady/ladies who staff the library know a wealth of info and are very nice. I personally have not visited there, but a fellow family researcher mentioned it to me. Possibly they might know something about the Roach name. Good Luck! Marlyn Duff

    2. Hi. You mentioned a Roach Cemetery in Logan Co., IL. Could you tell me more about it? I have a Mary Ann ROACH, born 1844, who lived in Logan Co., IL, and I've hit a brick wall with her. Where did the name "Roach Cemetery" come from? Were there a lot of ROACHes there? No pun intended! :) Please let me know. Thanks. Beth BSmith7439@aol.com

    2. As far as I know the Springer Cemetery District is maintaining all cemeteries in Logan County except Steenbergen [which is endowed quite nicely]. Some cemeteries sit way back in the field up a dirt field access road that becomes mud at certain times of the year and the work crews simply cannot get in. Others get more attention because the crews can get to them regularly. 2. On the web site we have a listing of cemeteries and their locations, also a nice map which contains even more listings. <g> You can print out the cemetery listings or even the map for future reference. Carlyle is in Lake Fork. That would be prime territory for the Lucases. Some of the area around Atlanta that is in Logan County now was once in DeWitt or McLean County [depending on which area you are referring to]. No, I don't know exactly which ones. Actually, there is a web site which has maps of Illinois with county lines and how those changed. Going there and seeing if I can figure out how it comes together is on my 'to do' list. 2. Marlyn, I hope you don't mind another question from me. I was putting your information on Sarah's parents into my files when I noticed that I had no information on Sarah Hoblit's siblings. 3. I just looked at the Carlyle, Clinton County listings for the Carlyle and St. Mary's cemeteries and didn't find any Turleys or Dowlings. Neither did I see any marriages for 1856-1873. If you are talking about this city, ask me again in about a month after I get an index made for my newly acquired listings. Dorothy Falk ---------- From: clrothwell@mindspring.com To: ILLOGAN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ILLOGAN-L] LUCAS - HOBLIT Date: Thursday, February 04, 1999 9:44 AM There's major doubt about the 3rd marriage to Samuel Turley. It is reported in the Johannes Michael Hoblit Family (1732-1870) by Hannah Foster Dowling but that means that after the death of husband James Turley she married her stepson Samuel. Samuel had a wife named Sarah who died July 13, 1859. Sarah Hoblit was dead [I hope] in 1848 when her estate was probated. Samuel and his wife Sarah are buried in Carlyle Cemetery according to Vallentine. I don't have the listing for that cemetery to check. 2. Greetings! Where is Carlyle cemetery located? I had not noted it before in the areas of Logan Co., where the Hoblits resided. If not in Logan or Clinton Cos., possibly check McLean Co., as the city of Atlanta in Logan Co. is on the far northern part of the county. Three of John Hoblit's siblings married three Larison siblings, also from the Atlanta area - yet many of the Larisons are buried in McLean Co. Will be interested to see where that might be - many Hoblits are buried in Roach and Atlanta cemeteries - with my husband's ancestor being buried in Old Union Cem., in Lincoln, IL. Johannes Michael's son, John, is buried in Roach Cemetery - one of the oldest in that area and what is so nice, is that it seems as if family has been doing much to maintain the grave stones, etc. in that cemetery. 1. Re: [ILLOGAN-L] Sarah HOBLIT and Thomas LUCAS
    2. Shauna, It is me again - from the info I have, the original immigrant to this country was JOHANNES MARTIN VEIGLE/WEIGLE. He was born 11NOV1703 In Saalbach, Brandenberg, Germany; d.31JAN1759 in York Co., PA; married ANNA DOROTHY TRIDDELL in 1729 in Rathenburg, Germany. I have no other info about Anna Dorothy Triddell. Their son, SEBASTIAN (Van) VIEGLE was born 1732 - do not know where - and d.17JAN1807 in York Co., PA. He married CATHERINE LEIB in PA about 1756. I have very little info on Catherine other than her father's name being John and that she was born about 1736. They had at least 4 children - Peter, Henry Susannah, and Anna Katrina. I feel that it is highly possible that Sebastian was the ancestor because JOHANNES MICHAEL HABLUTZEL had a son (his eldest?) named Sebastian which ended up being Boston Hoblit. I am sorry - before I had the names reversed, but upon verifying, his name sequence was JOHANNES MICHAEL rather than the reverse. There were so many Johns in the Hoblit line, that they started to refer to him as Michael just to separate him from the several others. Marlyn Duff (again) New Berlin, WI

    2. After more searching, I did locate some info in my records re Sarah Hoblit who married Thomas Lucas - he was her first husband and they were married 29JUN1809 in Highland Co., OH. Her 2nd husband was James Turley and 3rd husband was Samuel Turley - she had 11 children. The names of the parents are pretty accurate - the father's name was Michael Johannes Hablutzel - called John - and, as is obvious, the name changed along the way. He immigrated here from Alsace-Lorraine, Germany. His spouse's name was Anna Katrina Van Viegle - she was born in York Co., PA and married Michael Johannes Hoblit in PA. Hope this helps - Marlyn Duff New Berlin, WI

    1. Re: [ILLOGAN-L] LUCAS - HOBLIT
    2. Greetings! Most Hoblits probably invested money in the Hoblit Seed Farms (still in operation under that name, but no longer owned by the family) in Atlanta. My husband's direct ancestor, John Hoblit who married Mellicent Seward was one of the first Hoblits in that area as he and his brother-in-law (I think that was the relationship), Timothy Bennett, were some of the first from that family to check out that area. John Hoblit is on the 1850 census for Mt. Pulaski Twp., Logan Co., IL and on the 1860 census for Atlanta, Logan Co., IL. Logan Co. originally was part of Sangamon Co. - was it until late 1840's? - should show on the GenWeb site, I should think. I do have some info that a John Hoblit, who married a Mary Pogue, and Mary were buried in Lucas Chapel Cem. That John is descended from Boston (Sebastian) Hoblit, so possibly your ancestor was related to the Boston Hoblit branch. Boston was a brother to my husband's ancestor, John. Have nothing further on the Lucas bit - sorry! Good Luck! Marlyn Duff New Berlin, WI MJD62@aol.com
