    1. Re: [ILLOGAN-L] Feeble Minded Institute
    2. The original name was Illinois Asylum for Feeble Minded Children. It was later changed to Lincoln State School and Colony. Still later was changed to Lincoln Developmental Center. It was originally supposed to be a residential training facility for the mentally retarded, but there were people placed there that didn't necessarily meet that criteria. I can remember growing up seeing the State School band marching in every local parade. They were actually pretty good.

    2. Here's the official story. The Broderbund CDs [and the others] are copyright. When you buy the CD it is for your use, not for you to share with everyone. Therefore, we can't discuss looking up things on those CDS for others ON THIS LIST [or on the web site] because we are technically allowing copyright violations. I trust we all understand the fine point here. Yes, I know, there are some sites that offer to do it. That's between Broderbund's attorneys and the site owners. I only have to worry about my lists and my web sites thank goodness. Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com

    1. Re: [ILLOGAN-L] HICKEY
    2. I am under the impression that Jim Hickey died. Perhaps I am wrong but only Betty is listed in the phone book. According to the 1982 Logan book, p. 332, there was a James H. and Mary Rourke Hickey who had at least one child Josephine who married Alfred Clark Wacaser. James H. Hickey was born in Staunton, VA, May 2, 1851, a son of John and Ellen Hickey who came from Tipperary. Mary Rourke Hickey was born Nov 14, 1852, in Norristown, PA, a daughter of William and Mary Rourke. If you will email me Sharon I will send you more information and may be able to put you in contact with some other descendants since they very cleverly married into some of my lines. I have not entered all of the information I have on those lines into the computer but I will send you what I have. It's too long for this list. 3. I am trying to find out information about my grandfather and his family. He lived in Lincoln, Logan county, Illinois with his brother and two sisters and his parents in the early 1900s from what I have been told. My parents even lived in Lincoln the year before I was born, in 1961. They both worked in Lincoln in 1961 and 1962, but haven't kept any contact with the HICKEY side of the family. My grandfather was called Jack, but his given name was John HICKEY. He had at least one brother, Bill (William) and two sisters Margaret and Helen (died young in 1907). The parents of Jack and his siblings were John and Mary. John, Mary, William, Margaret and Helen are all buried in Holy Cross (?) cemetery in Lincoln. Jack died in 1936 at about mid-40s in age and is buried in Springfield with my grandmother. There are two dates that have been found for his birthdate, 1892 or 1894. I have excerpts from a letter written in 1982 to Mrs Jack Hickey of Springfield, IL (my grandmother) from James T Hickey, Lincoln Curator of the IL State Historical Library. In it he states that he thinks he remembers Jack and bill as they were known to his father, Emmett who died in 1947. He said that he/they were related to or distantly related to all the HICKEYs in Logan county. Any information about these people, their ancestors or descendants would be appreciated. Also any ideas on how I can find out more definite information would be appreciated. I am in Kansas. Thank you in advance, Sharon

    1. [ILLOGAN-L] Hoblit -- Hoblet?
    2. Hoblit researchers -- please read the following: "The Lucases while in Ohio and later in Illinois belonged to the Regular Baptist Church, also known as the Hardshell or Predestinarian Baptist Church. Abraham Lucas was an original member of the Caesars Creek Baptist Church when it was organized on 21 Apr 1813 (C9). Meetings were held in the area as early as 1803 (D39). The Caesars Creek Baptist Church was the oldest organized church in Greene Co., Ohio, and was located a few miles southwest of Jamestown, Greene, Ohio (D39). The first church building was a log structure located on Caesars Creek on the road between Patterson's crossing and New Jasper. The membership list for 1820 included Abraham Lucas, Masses (sic. Marcy) Lucas, Michael Mann, Sally Copeland, Mellisant Hoblet, Barber Hoblet, David Hoblet, John Hoblet, William Copeland, John Turner, Solomon Wood, Joseph Lucas, Peter P. Lucas, Thomas Lucas, and John Lucas." Lucas, Mann, Copeland, Turner and Wood ended up in Mt. Pulaski. Are these Hoblets the Hoblits who ended up in the Atlanta area? D39 refers to History of Greene County, OH. C9 refers to Caesars Creek Baptist Church records, Jamestown, Green County, OH. Research by John Vallentine. 2. Yes - some spelled it Hoblit and others Hoblet. I have been in touch with researchers of each spelling. It seems that the descendants of Boston Hoblit ended up spelling it with an "e" - Hoblet. They are one and the same family. Marlyn

    2. There are a couple of old churches still around but I thought I'd start with the ones you can't find if you look in the phone book. Also, if you read the church stories in the more recent local histories there is more boasting than substance. 1. [ILLOGAN-L] Copyright Guidelines
    2. Here's a link to determine when 'old' things are in the public domain: http://www.unc.edu/~unclng/public-d.htm Pay particular attention to the 'when published with notice' and the footnote as to what that means. Bottom line, published between 1923 and 1977 with no copyright notice it is NOT copyrighted. Published before 1923 it is in the public domain anyway. Published in 1978 or after notice is not required. Assume it is copyrighted. If you have something to contribute but weren't sure about the copyright status this site should give you the answer. 1. [ILLOGAN-L] Web Site Changes
    2. I have added information on all the public libraries in Logan County [not just Lincoln] to the Snail Mail Addresses page. I haven't found a street number for the Atlanta Library -- don't suppose it is needed but it wouldn't hurt. Why does Lincoln have hours? They are listed in the phone book. The others aren't. If you are aware of the hours let me know. Otherwise, I will call them as time permits. I have removed the churches listing. It wasn't remotely close to complete and was misleading. I am thinking of adding a page for old churches that are no more. French's Chapel comes to mind because it was just down the road from where I grew up but there are plenty of others. I was thinking a brief history of these churches, names associated with it, that sort of thing. What do you think? Can you contribute? Let me know. 2. Hi! Cannot contribute re old churches, but I think it is a good idea! Actually, the old Cumberland Presbyterian church in Lincoln was started in the middle 1800's and also includes alot of history. Was there a Roach Chapel - is that why the cemetery originally was named that? Marlyn

    1. Re: [ILLOGAN-L] LUCAS - HOBLIT
    2. Hi! There has to be some connection between your Lulu Larison and my husband's Larisons - primarily because of the Logan Co., IL connection. However, they were a large family - most who were descended from the Logan Co., IL Larisons came from Zanesville, Muskingum Co., OH. She would have to have descended from one of the sons, since her name was Larison - but I have no record of that name anywhere. However, I also have not followed up on all of the male Larisons to see just where they ended up, either. They are a very interesting family - came to this country in the late 1600's. If you ever learn of Lulu's parents' names, please let me know! Marlyn Duff (Mrs. James Duff) New Berlin, WI

    2. In one census account, a Lula Larison was living with her grandfather, Henry Evans in Lincoln County Nebraska. Henry and his wife Mary Bustard had lived in Logan County around 1875 when they first came to the US from Ireland. Does anyone recognize any of these people?

    1. [ILLOGAN-L] McCray's in Lincoln
    2. I am looking forinfo on my g-grandfather's brothers. My gg name was Robert McCray and in his obit from the Decatur Review, June 21, 1936, it stated he had 2 living brothers living in Lincoln. Their names were Walter and Albert. I would like if someone with info on these 2 men or better, a relative contact me. Also, when I was in Lincoln this past June, while in the beautiful old library there was a biography of McCray's in the genealogical section. At the time I had no knowledge these might be relations, so I neglected to copy them. If someone from the area could copy it or knows if the library would do this I again would be apprciative. Mike McCray
