That is the NOT the family history search site though. We received a message this afternoon from LDS regarding the site: ...Salt Lake LDS FHL, announcing the Beta testing of Family Search on line. It is not yet up, a problem with a piece of equipment, but will be starting sometimes this month and will be up only a few weeks as a test run. If there is not a lot of interest it will be taken off and not put back on. So spread the word and keep trying to get through. When it comes back on line the URL will be: http://www.familysearch.org That notice agrees with what I related earlier in connection with the site. Please, keep trying that site. Message-ID: <005101be65b1$f740fa00$f39550d8@oemcomputer> #1 A Story To Live By by Ann Wells (Los Angeles Times) My brother-in-law opened the bottom drawer of my sister's bureau and lifted out a tissue-wrapped package. "This," he said, "is not a slip. This is lingerie." He discarded the tissue and handed me the slip. It was exquisite; silk, handmade and trimmed with a cobweb of lace. The price tag with an astronomical figure on it was still attached. "Jan bought this the first time we went to New York, at least 8 or 9 years ago. She never wore it. She was saving it for a special occasion. Well, I guess this is the occasion." He took the slip from me and put it on the bed with the other clothes we were taking to the mortician. His hands lingered on the soft material for a moment, then he slammed the drawer shut and turned to me. "Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Every day you're alive is a special occasion." I remembered those words through the funeral and the days that followed when I helped him and my niece attend to all the sad chores that follow an unexpected death. I thought about them on the plane returning to California from the Midwestern town where my sister's family lives. I thought about all the things that she hadn't seen or heard or done. I thought about the things that she had done without realizing that they were special. I'm still thinking about his words, and they've changed my life. I'm reading more and dusting less. I'm sitting on the deck and admiring the view without fussing about the weeds in the garden. I'm spending more time with my family and friends and less time in committee meetings. Whenever possible, life should be a pattern of experience to savor, not endure. I'm trying to recognize these moments now and cherish them. I'm not "saving" anything; we use our good china and crystal for every special event-such as losing a pound, getting the sink unstopped, the first camellia blossom. I wear my good blazer to the market if I like it. My theory is if I look prosperous, I can shell out $28.49 for one small bag of groceries without wincing. I'm not saving my good perfume for special parties; clerks in hardware stores and tellers in banks have noses that function as well as my party-going friends. "Someday" and "one of these days" are losing their grip on my vocabulary. If it's worth seeing or hearing or doing, I want to see and hear and do it now. I'm not sure what my sister would've done had she known that she wouldn't be here for the tomorrow we all take for granted. I think she would have called family members and a few close friends. She might have called a few former friends to apologize and mend fences for past squabbles. I like to think she would have gone out for a Chinese dinner, her favorite food. I'm guessing - I'll never know. It's those little things left undone that would make me angry if I knew that my hours were limited. Angry because I put off seeing good friends whom I was going to get in touch with - someday. Angry because I hadn't written certain letters that I intended to write - one of these days. Angry and sorry that I didn't tell my husband and daughter often enough how much I truly love them. I'm trying very hard not to put off, holdback, or save anything that would add laughter and luster to our lives. And every morning when I open my eyes, I tell myself that it is special. Every day, every minute, every breath truly is... a gift from God. If you've received this it is because someone cares for you. If you're too busy to take the few minutes that it would take right now to forward this to ten people, would it be the first time you didn't do that little thing that would make a difference in your relationships? I can tell you it certainly won't be the last. Take a few minutes to send this to a few people you care about, just to let them know that you're thinking of them. May love litter your life with blessings! JUST SEND IT!! "You've got to dance like nobody's watching, and love like it's never going to hurt." "People say true friends must always hold hands, but true friends don't need to hold hands because they know the other hand will always be there." --------------8A75137B9BA3CEB4A81A5DD2--
First, the LDS site is not working yet. I understand it was working and is now down again. Someone said the 8th it would be up again but I think the rumor mill is running... Here's another LDS site with some interesting links: http://lds-online.com/family.htm This is a slow load. It has a link for family history but that link is not active. You might find a useful link. I am getting the feeling that whoever is putting this site up needs more hands on web experience. Some of the interesting links are broken. I think I failed to follow through on a request for information regarding the cemetery listings books. The Decatur Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 1548, Decatur, IL 62525-1548 has quite a few publications available for Logan County as well as other Illinois counties. Please note that members receive a 20% discount so if you are planning to buy more than one you might want to consider a year's membership. Cemetery book pricing is based on the number of pages. They are basically copies of original typed pages. All except Vol. 5 have an index. Vol. 5 is alphabetical. These listings were made, basically, in the '60's. Vol. 1 covers Edgell-Barnes, Jolly (Timer or Lost), Blue Grass, Kline, Braucher, Lawrence, Mt. Pulaski. $11 Vol. 2 covers Bowers-Templeman, Downing, Steenbergen, Bell, Lake Bank, Two Mile Grove, Roach, Mountjoy, Niblik, Gilbert, Howeser, Beason (Keys), Berryhill. $10 Vol. 3 covers Green Hill, Bethel, Union Station, Lawndale, Elkhart, Hartsburg, Carlyle. $11 Vol. 4 covers Walnut Hill, Zion, Thomas, Poor Hill, Stephens, Latham-Thompson, Donnan, Pleasant Valley, Lucas Chapel, Musick, Baker Skelton, Perry, Carlock, Reed, Springbank, Laenna, Turley, Richmond Grove. $11 Vol. 5 is in two parts. Covers Old Union Cemetery in Lincoln, contains inscriptions plus burial records, records of IL Veterans Commission and list of those who purchased lots. $15 Vol. 6 covers St. Mary's, St. Patrick's, Atlanta and burial records. [I don't know what that means.] $11 Vol. 7 covers New Union Cemetery, Lincoln, burials from 1893. $7 The Decatur Society also has an index to the 1840 Logan Census for $4 and one for the 1850 Logan Census for $8. Records of Lincoln Circuit Methodist Churches 1860-1920. Includes marriages, baptisms, members, probationers and other records. $9 G. E. Tuttle Funeral Home, Atlanta, 1862-1918. List of caskets furnished, dates of burial, sometimes location of burial. $7 Notes from "Lincoln Evening Courier" Centennial Edition 1953. Genealogical information from bios of early settlers, index to original articles. $4 The Logan County Genealogical and Historical Society, 11 Arcade Court, Lincoln, IL 62656-2743, has a book on Bethel, Green Hill and Hartsburg Cemeteries. This is a bound book and sells for $30 plus postage. They also have the reprint of 1878 History for $40 plus shipping. The Combined Atlas covering 1873, 1893 and 1910 is $40 plus shipping. This is excellent if your ancestors were land owners in the country, not particularly useful [but interesting] if they lived in town. There are bios, sketches of people and homes and so on. Heirship Records of Logan County is $10. These are copies of typed pages. Hope that helps. The LDS Family site is working; at least since yesterday. You can get to it through our home page at: http://members.aol.com/rehfla/elihalsey/index.html or: http://lds-online.com/family.htm Bob Halsey rehfla@aol.com Viera, FL
We just added two new links; one to the new LDS Family History - On-line site, and to a site that has on-line Census data and lookup volunteers, by state. Check the bottom right of the page at: http://members.aol.com/rehfla/elihalsey/index.html Bob Halsey rehfla@aol.com Viera, FL
Cheryl: Are there any other cemeteries in Atlanta besides St. Marys and St Patricks -if you weren't Catholic, where would you be buried?? Thanks Mick - Fla
This is an announcement, NOT an endorsement. I haven't found much NEW in their online databases. If you are just starting out it might be different. They add one a day so you never know. I have the reference library on CD because it came with TMG -- The Master Genealogist [the genealogy software I use most]. The Source IS a great book. It is on the CD, at least on mine. I also point out that other genealogy companies, such as Everton, offer similiar programs and you should check them all out online to see which meets your needs if you are considering any subscription. Ancestry.com is introducing three new membership options: Gold Membership ($99.95) ~ 12-month access to over 200 million names on Ancestry.com ~ Ancestry Reference Library on CD-ROM; 4,300 pages of important and useful information on one convenient CD-ROM ($69.95 value) ~ Ancestry Magazine -- 6 issues/1 year ($24.95 value) ~ The Source, A Guidebook of American Genealogy, 846 pages, 8 1/2 x 11", hardbound ($49.95 value) ~ 15 percent off all Ancestry.com store purchases when you call 1-800-ANCESTRY to place your order Premium Membership ($79.95) ~ 12-month access to over 200 million names on Ancestry.com ~ Ancestry Reference Library on CD-ROM; 4,300 pages of important and useful information on one convenient CD-ROM ($69.95 value) ~ Ancestry Magazine -- 6 issues/1 year ($24.95 value) ~ 15 percent off all Ancestry.com store purchases when you call 1-800-ANCESTRY to place your order Standard Membership ($59.95) ~ 12-month access to over 200 million names on Ancestry.com ~ Your choice of the Ancestry Reference Library (a $69.95 value) or a year's subscription to Ancestry magazine ($24.95 value). Quarterly Membership ($19.95) ~ 3 month access to over 200 million names on Ancestry.com For more details on these exciting new membership plans, visit: http://www.ancestry.com/ancestry/signup/on-line.asp Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com Coordinator, Logan County, ILGenWeb Project http://www.rootsweb.com/~illogan/loindex.htm Logan County mailing list> LOGAN-L-request@rootsweb.com Downing mailing list> DOWNING-L-request@rootsweb.com Harding mailing list> HARDING-L-request@rootsweb.com Downing query board> http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Downing Lucas query board> http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Lucas

We have just added the Name Index for the 1860 DeWitt County, IL Census which is in the GEN Archives. The Index was provided by Earliene, the DeWitt County Listing Host. You can find the index at: http://members.aol.com/rehfla/elihalsey/index.html At the bottom left of the page is a link "LOOKUPS" DeWitt County. On the DeWitt page is a link at the bottom to the 1860 Census. I have included McLean and Logan Counties because many of the names are the same in all three counties. I use to live on a farm in DeWitt, go to school at Ben Funk Elem in McLean, and ride my horse to the west farm in Logan. Hope you enjoy, Bob Halsey rehfla@aol.com Viera, FL
I really don't know about mailing lists. Why don't you check it out? I would guess that mailing lists are just too numerous for her to list -- like the Logan web site, she is more for genealogy than individual surnames. However, there is a guy who maintains a list of genealogy lists. I don't remember his name but he definitely does the rootsweb lists. Two new links on the main page: Cyndi's List, THE ultimate list of genealogy links and Cyndi's toolbox for creating your own genealogical web page from finding a free host on. If you already have a genealogy web with families from Logan County I am planning a simple page with links to such just such sites. We are prohibited from using space on the county web site for genealogies but we can provide links to them. The only requirements I know of is the site must be G rated and have Logan County, IL, families. Obviously, all the information on the site remains yours. Let me know. If you haven't already put up a site go to Cyndi's toolbox and find out how to do it. Preserve your family history. This request comes from the coordinator of another county. If anyone has access to the 1910 census or any information on this family from Broadwell please let me know. Thanks. Atlanta Township is to the west and Oran Township to the Southwest. Waynesville is in Waynesville Township of Dewitt County. Barnett Township is the next to the south, Wapella Township to the east, and McLean County is on the north.
