Does anyone have access to the 1870 Census or Census Index for Logan County? I am looking for William CURTIS, age 33, wife Eliza Ann, age 27, + five children. They were most likely in or near Lawndale, East Lincoln Twp. By the way, I found Raszy E. CURTIS in the Lawndale Union Cemetery. Thanks for everyone's help. Bob Halsey rehfla@aol.com Viera, FL
Ronald, Question; Are you connected in some way to the DRONEs in Ridgway, Illinois? I have an address of a Mrs. Martha (Drone) Spahr at 1425 Dickey Ford Rd., Equality, IL 92634 Also a Mrs. Mary Ellen (DRONE) Morris of 240 Reavis Pl. St. Louis, MO 63119. As for you request for the LDS/FHC index of marriages for Illinois I can not say, do you have film Nos. of such? Are they the film that was sent back? IT would have been cheaper to have extended the film once more than to have to reorder. Also should a film be extended twice it is considered as an "Indefinite Loan". This I know as I have worked in an FHC consecutively for the last 12 years; and seven as an adviser to an FHC. The only condition that may not grant you the indefinite service is a matter of local policy or storage space; either of which are out of my control. If you know the film Nos. involved send the rental fee of $3.75 for each and I'll order them for first period; abt 4 weeks in our FHC. We my wife & I work there each Tue 1 to 5 PM, We will give them a search & see if your people are registered in them. Also include the details of each person you desire to be addressed. My snail mail address is Julius DRONE, 40442 Hinkley Rd., Hinkley, CA. 92347; Our ph # is 1-760-253-4338. Julius
There are some new links on the main page, mostly to Black Hawk War and Spanish-American War databases. There are some new links on the Civil War page also. It seems to me there have been quite a few queries lately so if you haven't been to that page lately stop by and see if someone is looking for the same folks you are. S-K Publications is putting copies of census records on CD for a fee. If someone buys a CD the company donates a copy of the file to the USGenWeb Archives to be placed on the web for free public access. The cost of the CD is based on the number of page numbers. It was estimated that the cost of a CD of the 1850 Logan County census would be 200 pages or about $90. Presumably the later censuses, covering increased residents, cost more. I have ordered the 1840 Logan County census. When I get it it will also go up on the web as described above. Unlike the CDs from the software companies it is not copyright and can be shared with everyone. If you have spare cash around [or you just want to see what is already available] check out their web site at: http://www.skpub.com/genie/ Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com Coordinator, Logan County, ILGenWeb Project http://www.rootsweb.com/~illogan/loindex.htm Logan County mailing list> LOGAN-L-request@rootsweb.com Downing mailing list> DOWNING-L-request@rootsweb.com Harding mailing list> HARDING-L-request@rootsweb.com Downing query board> http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Downing Lucas query board> http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Lucas

I have a brick wall. I know during early migrations people often moved in groups. Does anyone know if the people who settled in the area between Broadwell and Mt. Pulaski around the time of the Deep Snow, 1830-31 were coming from a certain area? My George W. Read, an only child, was born 1831 in Logan county shortly after his parents arrival and both parents died before he reached adulthood. Trying to figure out their names and where they came from. I would appreciate anyone who has any Logan histories to look up this name for me. I only have access to the 1911 history myself. Thank you Phylis Borders

Lawndale is in section 2, East Lincoln Township. The only thing called Lawndale in the current phone book is Lawndale Tap. I think of it as a wide spot in the road with an elevator rather than a town [there are several of those about, many of which no longer have the elevator either] but it does appear as a town in the old plat books. There is still a grain elevator. I do not see any churches or schools in the phone book. The old plat shows a school at Mulberry and Lincoln Streets and one church at Main and Jefferson. I do not see any cemeteries. I don't really see any cemeteries. North would be Eminence and Atlanta Townships, east would be Oran Township. Since Lawndale is in the northeast end of East Lincoln Township those others would be the likely places to look for a cemetery. If you have a name probably someone on the list would be able to check the cemetery books. I have several and I know some members have them all. Cheryl, I am looking for the burial site of Raszy E. CURTIS, born 7/20/1862 died 11/25/1863. Her parents, William Wesley & Eliza Ann (Campbell) CURTIS, were married in Logan County in 1859 and her older brother and sister were both born in Lawndale, IL. If anyone has cemetery inscriptions for East Lincoln, Eminence, Atlanta, and Oran Townships, I would appreciate a lookup. Bob Halsey rehfla@aol.com
Thanks for all the information on Lawndale. I finally received a copy of the missing page to our CURTIS family bible and instead of the town being Longsdale, it was Lawndale. It sounds like the place. Bob Halsey
Lawndale is on the north edge of East Lincoln Township (T20N-R2W of 3rd Principal Meridian). Don't know anything about cemeteries.
What township is Lawndale in? Are there any old cemeteries or churches, 1863, near by? Bob Halsey rehfla@aol.com Viera, FL
Dear List / Cheryl <sniped> >They search county histories, cemetery inscriptions, indexes of marriage >records and indexes of census records. The first two you can probably get >someone on this list to search for you if you ask nicely. Does any one know if the LDS/FHC's have copies of indexes of marriage for Illinois? Know the Film #'s? The center in my area is open only one night a week and working as I do I often can not get there (even had films go back before I could view them). So anyway, asking as nicely as I can, should any one have ready access to marriage index and willing to do a "look-up", here is who I am looking for: Clement L., age 17, b.Sept. 1864 Effie J., age 5, b. 30 Oct. 1876 In 1882 my maternal gg-grandfather (Daniel Morris) died leaving three children orphaned. William O. Morris, age 8, b. 23 Jan. 1874 is my g-grandfather and we have some information reguarding him. The three, had an L.N. Morris appointed guardian March 30th 1882. I think "L.N." was Lester Morris living in Orvil twp. and I believe that he a brother of Daniel. Anyway, Clement L. and Effie J. is who I am trying to trace, and we have no clue! Of course there is no 1890 Census and I have not been able to locate them on any of the following Censuss. My thought is that perhaps a lead maybe obtained via a marriage index... Or perhaps someone has another idea as how to trace these two. All information would be appreciated. Regards Ron
HI - NOTHING MUCH NEW ON THIS END - I HAVE A COUPLE FILMS AT THE CENTER - WAS PLANNING ON GOING THERE TOMORROW BUT HAVE BEEN ASKED TO HELP OUT AT A CARVING THING -SO WILL DO THAT INSTEAD - NOT SURE IT'S OPEN ON SAT. ANYHOW- AS FOR COPIES OF STUFF YOU HAVE I HAVE TO GO THROUGH MY STUFF AND SEE WHAT I NEED - WELL - MAC HAS BEEN SLEEPING LOG ENOUGH GUESS I'D BETTER WAKE HIM UP AND SEND HIM TO BED - LOVE YOU -MOM
Here's a resource you may not have known about -- the Illinois State Historical Library. http://www.state.il.us/hpa/lib If you go to the Genealogical Research page you will find they will search their records for you, one request at a time, mail requests only. Read the details on the web site. The service is free for Illinois residents, although a copy fee is required. Out of state residents are charged $10. [I hope you have relatives in Illinois.] They search county histories, cemetery inscriptions, indexes of marriage records and indexes of census records. The first two you can probably get someone on this list to search for you if you ask nicely. The last one became available to subscribers of Ancestry.com this week and I'm sure other services will have it soon. I haven't seen an index of marriage records. The CDs I have checked do not have Logan County. The library also researches non genealogical information. Some of their books may be borrowed by interlibrary loan. On Feb 17 I sent an email request to the email link on http://www.sos.state.il.us/depts/archives/datcivil.html#photocopies requesting the Illinois Civil War records of William Nelson Downing and George Huff Downing. You may request two and must wait until you get the return before requesting two more. William is my gggrandfather. George is one of the many other relatives who served in the 106th but he served in a different company. I had all the information -- just wanted to test the service. On March 8 I received photocopies from the "Muster and Descriptive Roll" of the the two companies, the page which included each name. In my case that meant I got other Downings and also other relatives and names I know. My Harding, unfortunately, is not on either list. That's a short turnaround. The copies are NOT great and the bottom of the page is unreadable. It gives name, age, description [feet, inches, hair, eyes, complextion, marital status], occupation, nativity [town, county, state], joined for service and enrolled [when, where, by whom, period], mustered into service [when, where, by whom], residence [town, county, state, something I can't read by is blank], last paid [two columns], travelling [two columns], a couple other columns, all blank on my sheets and nearly impossible to read, mustered out [when, where, by whom], remarks. Get your magnifying glass to read. It is worth it since it is free. Check the Illinois Civil War database, find your ancestors, get your free information. Certified copies, which presumably are better, are available for a fee. The National Archives information is better but BUT it doesn't include that physical description. I happen to have photos of my CW ancestors but certainly no indication of height, eye color and so on. Cheryl: There is a cemetery at the south end of town - out in the country. I thought I had found my g.grandfather, Martin Miller there, but turned out he is in Lincoln proper - Holy Cross. I believe it is called Lawndale Cemetery, but I could be wrong. I was so glad to finally have found it, after driving around and looking, but couldn't get in. After I returned to Fla., I wrote to the "cemetery" and the people in charge made a trip out there to search for me - but when I went back to Lincoln the following year and found the grave, it was not mine. Abelink, one of the ISPs in Logan County, has been up and down all week. As a result list members' mail bounces. The server automatically removes people after several bounces. If you know anyone on the list with an Abelink [get it? Abe link in Lincoln? I didn't for quite awhile. <g>] address you might let them know that they will probably have to resubscribe when Abelink is back up. Are there any lists available that give Civil War casualty statistics by state? (i.e. which Southern state had the most casualties, which Northern state had the most casualties, etc.) Shauna
