    1. [ILLOGAN-L] Logan Web Site
    2. The National Association of Counties, a group I have never heard of [and I spent many years either in local government or covering it for newspapers], has set up a web site for Logan County. It is suppose to provide information. NOTHING on it works. [Too bad since some of them would VERY useful.] If you search around you will discover that Logan is not a member of this association which is apparently involved in the 'Harden Political System,' whatever that is. There may be a good reason Logan is not a member. http://cidnet.net/logan.htm Personally, I don't see how a national organization covering all counties can have a 'logan.htm' as there are Logan Counties in many states. However, for your information, the site is there. If you wander a bit you will find a link to county profiles and demographic information. I didn't check those out. Life sometimes gets in the way of genealogy. I think there is an agenda involved but that's just my gut. It does give a figure of 31,499 [interesting number, no?] as the population of Logan County in 1996. 1. [ILLOGAN-L] 9,000 Visitors!!! [& thoughts]
    2. We have had nearly 9,000 visitors to the Logan County web site since I took over a year ago compared to 1,500 in the prior year. I'm thrilled. What does this mean to you? For one thing it means that more people see your posted queries. As Martha Stewart says, this is a good thing. If you haven't posted your query post it! Also, I'd like to remind you that you can print out the archived queries and study them offline at leisure. It's also handy to have that list around in case you come up with a new name in your research. Soon I will be archiving the January thru March queries. Have you looked over the current list recently? It also means more people know about and join this list. I have several lists as most of you know. Some lists are very busy, always sharing all information on the list and thus with each other. I have one of those. Some lists are not as busy, responding privately to questions, as this list is more likely to do. But just because there is not a lot of traffic don't be fooled into thinking no one is reading because there are a lot of subscribers. Now, I would prefer that you respond online and share [except about lookups of CDs and other copyrighted materials which is prohibited by copyright] but it is up to you. Some lists just don't have many members. I have a surname list like that and, as you might expect, it is also the surname I know the least about. It also means that the casual visitor is more likely to see the bio, obit or Civil War information you submit and maybe find the key to their ancestor. I am sysop in the history forum on Compuserve [I have a lot of hats. Anyone for Richard III?] and just this week found someone looking for a Civil War ancestor in 'central Illinois.' The ancestor turned out to be from Sangamon but I, of course, had her come by us and she found other names she was interested in. I hope she tells three friends. I hope the web site is useful to all of you. I welcome comments, corrections, suggestions, whatever to make it better. Next year 20,000 visitors!!! <GGG> Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com Coordinator, Logan County, ILGenWeb Project http://www.rootsweb.com/~illogan/loindex.htm Logan County mailing list> LOGAN-L-request@rootsweb.com Downing mailing list> DOWNING-L-request@rootsweb.com Harding mailing list> HARDING-L-request@rootsweb.com Downing query board> http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Downing Lucas query board> http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Lucas

    1. [ILLOGAN-L] Threaded List Messages, Searchable
    2. We participated in this so you can check it out for messages you may have missed. NOTE the search engine to help you along. Shortly they will add all the list messages [only those in the beta test are included]. I haven't had a chance to check it out today, just passing along the information so I don't forget! THREADED LIST ARCHIVES ARE NOW AVAILABLE. Now you can read 122,813 messages from 877 mailing lists using your Web browser by visiting <http://archiver.rootsweb.com/>. All those messages are from just three months of beta tests -- watch this archives grow with its public debut. This is a remarkably comfortable way to browse through the posts that have been made to the lists. Be sure to use the integrated search engine to find what you are looking for. To use the Archiver you will need to pick a user name and password and you will need to accept a cookie. The reason for passwords and cookies is to keep spammers' e-mail address harvesters *out* of the archives. Because of this password-and- cookie feature, listowners can set up lists to be archived with confidence that they are *not* exposing posters' addresses to spammers. We encourage all RootsWeb listowners to visit the Archiver and then include their lists in the archives. The next step is to start making old list messages available. 1. [ILLOGAN-L] Apenzeller's
    2. I have known Jerry Appenzeller for years. There aren't very many of them. I told "Appy" today that someone was searching for Appenzeller ancestors from Logan County. He seemed interested. Appy lives in the house that his grandfather was born in, South of Hopedale, Illinois, just a couple of miles North of the Logan county line. I found the following in the phone book: Jerry Appenzeller, 13236 Appenzeller Road, Mackinaw, IL, 309 359 8559; John Appenzeller, 400 Stout Road, Bloomington, IL; 309 359 8481; Arthur G. Appenzeller, 2835 Townhall Road, Delevan, IL, 309 449 5789. I don't know my friend "Appy's" telephone number, but his business is in the rear portion of my building at Indian Creek Industrial Park, Hopedale, IL, John Wilham

    1. [ILLOGAN-L] Getting in on Genealogy
    2. This is from Ancestry.com's newsletter: According to an MSNBC article on "A Family Tree That Spans the Net" NBC News will be airing a weeklong series on genealogy called, "Finding Our Roots," beginning on April 19. According to the message: "NBC anchors Tom Brokaw, Katie Couric, Matt Lauer, Ann Curry, Al Roker, Jane Pauley, and Stone Phillips go looking for their ancestors, from Romania to Japan. We'll have a guide to finding your own family tree, links to some of the top databases, and reviews of genealogical software." The article is online at: http://www.msnbc.com/news/256222.asp (See the yellow box at the end of the article.) 1. [ILLOGAN-L] RODENBECK
    2. I am looking for family of LOUISE RODENBECK, born 12 Jul 1864, probably in Germany, maybe Ostfriesland. She possibly had a brother named WILKA RODENBECK. I can't find any information in KS on her (other than she married died there), could she have come from Logan Co? She married Remmer Janssen in KS in 1887, and his brother Dirk lived around Emden, Logan Co., IL. where Remmer stayed prior to moving to KS. In the KS State Census, it says "Wilke Rodenbeck, 35, Farmer, b. Germany, to KS from IL." Thank you Marcia

    1. [ILLOGAN-L] New Logan Townships/Sections Map
    2. I am delighted to announce a new link on the web page at http://www.rootsweb.com/~illogan/loindex.htm which will take you to a great new township and section map of Logan County. This map can be enlarged in detail in various options. It is excellent for location property from legal descriptions to see where your ancestors lived in Logan County. Parts of it can be a bit slow loading but it is worth it if you have legal description of the property. I think this map will help clarify legal descriptions for you if you are having problems as I have discovered many folks are. 2. I received this from David Williams. I think he intended it to go to the list but he had unsubcribed first so it bounced. I pass it on in case anyone was corresponding with him: I would like to explain why I am removing myself from the list. First the accolades! I think you have one of the "best" sites on the net. I find your source information informative and extremely helpful. In, fact, you have a beautiful site. My wife and I are leaving for Kentucky on a family history mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. We will be gone 18 months working in the archives at Frankfort. I do not know how much time we can spend with a computer, therefore, we are going to curtail activities until we get there and find out what the skinny is. We are noting your address, so do not be surprised to get some "snail" mail until we are settled. Our mailing address is David M. Williams 2023 Aberdeen Dr. League City, TX 77573 They will forward any mail we will receive. So God Bless you guys for the wonderful work you are doing. Until we meet again! Dave P.S.
