    3. Cheryl: This is a great idea. As you know I have been going through old issues of the Lincoln Herald from the 1870's looking for my g.grandfather. I have not found one paper yet that has this kind of information in it. I have found some deaths, but they are all of small children. So far the only thing I have gotten from these newspapers is mostly advertisements and one great big headache. clrothwell@mindspring.com wrote: > I have put Carol Tremaglio's transcriptions of two old newspaper columns up > at: > > http://www.rootsweb.com/~illogan/oldpaper.htm > > This is NOT linked from anywhere and is not available to the general > public. 2. Hi, I read through the news articles and was thrilled to find two of my relatives listed. Think old news articles online is a great idea. I have some letters that were written by my Grandmother and Aunts in Logan County in 1916 with a lot of gossip about different people in the Lincoln and Elkhart area. Would you be interested in seeing these? Let me know. Keep up the good work. Sincerely, Lois E. (Thomas) Branch Webevannin@aol.com

    2. Cheryl, I really have no info to send you from Logan Co. - wish that I did, other than obituaries. But, while it happened so long ago, someone just has to send you something about "The Big Snow" I hope. If they still talk about in the 1990's it had to be a BIG storm - guess it took place in 1830. I really like what you are doing with the site - will write a letter to my husband's 2nd cousin in Lincoln and see if he will check out some of the library's microfilm. Then again, his wife, who passed away two years ago was Ass't. Librarian and he might not enjoy going there. Too bad he doesn't have a computer - wonder if I can talk him into it! Keep up the good work! Marlyn Duff

    1. Re: [ILLOGAN-L] Sheridan TWP
    2. Go to the main page of the Logan web site and click on "Logan Township and Section Map." It will take you a map which shows Townships and Sections and you will find Sheridan Township. It is Township 20 North, Range 4 West. A township is not a community. It is an area of land [in Illinois] approximately six miles square or 36 square miles. There are variations. The township is used to locate land and is used in land/real estate descriptions outside of cities. Historically this method was set up for the Northwest Territory. I don't think there were any towns in Sheridan Township. Burton used to be on the border. 1. Re: [ILLOGAN-L] numbers
    2. Volume 99 means, without a doubt 1999. Issue 57 might have several messages so I don't know how the issue and the message number could be the same. In any event, Rootsweb sets up the list format and the numbering system is not an option I can change. I understand the problem. I get very confused when I get anything in digest. If you only check your email once or twice a day the only difference between digest and straight messages is the number of messages and I think it is easier to follow things with straight messages. If you check messages all day long or automatically get them as they come in then a digest might be better. One other thing that can cause confusion. Sometimes folks do not respond to the list which means other members miss the answer. It is more common on this list than some others. I strongly encourage everyone to respond to list messages on the list to prevent this. I've never cared for using the government map names instead of the township names for locations either. I have counted 61 cemeteries in Logan County and I think that is all of them. The map shows some three isolated grave sites and two unnamed cemeteries. One of the 'unnamed' is known to me -- Mt. Pulaski. The other 'unnamed' may be known as Orendorff or Medcalf or Metcalk or some combination thereof. It is on the Orvil/Eminence Township line, not sure which side as I can' find it on a map. If you know anything about this cemetery please let me know. Where exactly are Union and Old Union Cemeteries in Lincoln? I don't believe I've been to a cemetery in Lincoln. I gather they are in West Lincoln Township but I don't see them on the old maps. I need verification of the location. The state genealogical society insists that Lake Bank and Two Mile Grove Cemeteries are in Mt. Pulaski Township. I disagree. I say Lake Fork. These I have been to. Anyone? If anyone wants to read the list I have to look for errors before I put it up let me know and I'll be glad to share it. 3. Hi List, My mother recently found some photos that had a wedding party in it. It had at least my grandfather HICKEY prior to the marriage to my grandmother EGAN (they wed in 1933) and a total of 36 people in it. She says that it says on the back that it is from a William Bernard CONVERY who says that he is a cousin. His mother was sister to my grandfather's mother (Mary MOWEN) from what my mother can gather from the writing. Mr. CONVERY was living in Springfield, Illinois at the time he wrote on the picture, but has since passed on. His dates were 1898-1992. The wedding seems to have been held at St Patrick's in Lincoln. Does any one know how I can connect with any of these surnames? Thanks in advance, Sharon

So I am submitting my list of "MORRIS" names again in the hope that a list member may recognize someone and both have, and be willing to share additional information and/or clues relating to thier ancestry. The information has been compiled primarily from Champaign Co., Oh. and Logan Co., Ill., Federal Census' (1840 thru 1920) and a few other sources. We are especially looking for information as to what happen to Clement and Effie MORRIS. I have found no information reguarding them after 1882 when their father Daniel died. Additionally, we have no information reguarding William Otto, after the 1920 Fed. Census. One family note about William says that he was a horse trader and travel back and forth between Missouri & Ill. I have not been able to locate him in Mo. and he was in Logan Co. Ill in 1920. Any associated information appreciated. Or clues as to how to find Clement, William, or Effie. 1. Re: [ILLOGAN-L] SLC FHC
    2. What's to tell? It's a wonderful place for doing research. I spent two full days there from morning 'til closing at 10 PM. I only stopped briefly for a bite to eat at lunch in the snack room. I only had two days and I got copies of everything I found. It's a huge building. There is a whole floor of books, a whole floor for microfilm research on the US and a whole floor of microfilm research beyond the US shores. The entire building is full of nothing but genealogy sources. Everything was right there. I'm told some of the more obscure or seldom researched microfilms are kept in a vault inside a granite mountain, but all you need do is request the film and within 24 hours it's available. It's suggested that you check through your local FHC and if the film you need is vaulted, just tell them you're coming and what film you need and it will be waiting for you when you arrive. Everyone was extremely helpful with finding things and for giving me ideas on alternate places to look. I got copies of birth records when before all I could find were birth indexes. I got copies of death certificates and cemetery records, when before all I could find were death indexes. Absolutely amazing! I only had time to research Cook County, IL and Woodbury County, IA. They also have a complete set of US Census records. Because of info I found on birth and death certs, I was able to find more census records. I wish I could have stayed longer. I'm sure I'll go back again. Carol

    2. I am cleaning off my virtual desktop. It's a mess. <g> I don't know if I forwarded this or not. This is for your information. I have not ordered from them myself. No, that's not true. I have purchased a couple books from them but no CDs or microfilm. The web site information looks good. AFAIK this is an index, not copies of the census records. Heritage Quest has now coupled their well-known data accuracy with a powerful new search software that was developed in-house by computer and genealogy experts. Now instead of searching just a few criteria options, you are able to search any, or all, criteria extracted from the record. For example, in the Family Quest Archives(tm) 1870 Index, you can specify Surname, Given Name, Age, Sex, Race, Birthplace, County and Locality. This allows you to narrow your search possibilities and provides much faster search results. This new software is also incredibly flexible. It gives you the option to include specific age ranges or perform a wildcard search to include all spelling variations of a name. Once your search is complete, you have the option to sort the data in ascending or descending order, copy a record the Windows Clipboard, print your findings or make a text file of your search discovery. For more specifics about the software and indexes go to http://www.HeritageQuest.com/genealogy/CD-ROM Each CD is packed with 300,000 to over 1 million entries. The Family Quest Archives Indexes(tm) are available as follows: *ACD-0013, Illinois 1870 Census Index 730,500 Entries, $39.95 *ACD-0014, Ohio 1870 Census Index 779,963 Entries, $39.95 *ACD-0015, Virginia and West Virginia 1870 Census Index 490,710 Entries, $29.95 *ACD-0016, Maryland and DC 1870 Census Index 308,641 Entries, $29.95 *ACD-0021, Georgia 1870 Census Index 334,070 Entries, $29.95 *ACD-0028, Pennsylvania 1870 Census Index 1,082,632 Entries, $39.95 *ACD-0029, North and South Carolina 1870 Census Index 494,072 Entries, $29.95 *ACD-0033, Delaware and New Jersey 1870 Census Index 320,817 Entries, $29.95 *ACD-0034, Tennessee 1870 Census Index 347,700 Entries, $29.95 *ACD-0032, U.S. Federal Census Index, 1790 411,281 Entries, $29.95 *ACD-0025, Idaho 1910 Census Index 320,650 Entries, $19.95 *ACD-0031, U.S. Marriage Record Index, 1691-1850 584,537 Entries, $39.95 *ACD-0027, U.S. Land Record Index, 1790-1907 1,647,000 Entries, $39.95 Order now and receive free shipping.
