Joan, I sent you a couple messages about the cemetery lists. I just talked to Sandy. Dalen is reviewing the cemetery lists, no promise on any speed. He's 75 and retired and he doesn't go any faster than he wants to.<g> There are seven or eight cemetery books, not two. Those that I have are marked as read on my list. I only have three of the total. I also checked off the Old Union and Union in Lincoln because there are separate books on them. And I know the ones LCH&GS have done recently. I haven't seen the message about New Holland. I don't know if it got lost in cyberspace or what. I've gone through nearly 200 messages today. Ahhhhh! Of course one can put anything they want on their tombstone. I looked up Richmond Grove and your Linsons. I didn't realize I had that one before. Possibly the person who ordered the stone didn't know the birthdate. Possibly they didn't want to pay to inscribe all that. In any event, the listings contain everything on the stone that was readable and there is generally an explanation of things they couldn't read or guessed on. Joan: I didn't know there was a German paper so if anyone replies can you do it to the list as I would be greatly interested also. Is there a way of contacting it today? Cheryl, I did send a message in about Sheridan containing not only containing the town of New Holland but also Burtonview on the east side. It was about 10:30 last night. And it was sent right after I sent the note about ISGS cemetery listing being up-dated. The ISGS list now includes those that were transcribe by Minnie DeHass and the Shellhammers back in the last 1960's. Also with a question about there possibly being two cemeteries called Ten Mile cemetery. Joan
The biggest snow in recorded history was in Illinois in 1830. People had to dig tunnels from the houses to their barns to feed livestock. Before that time tobacco and cotton were both grown in central Illinois. There have been some big snows since then but not as big as the one in 1830. Joan Lund j-lund@uiuc.edu
In reading the cemetery inscriptions, I have found that date of birth is seldom given. Does this mean that in a lot of cases, especially in the 1800's that date of birth was not known? Also, in researching the LINSON family, I found Sarah McBride Linson didn't die in childbirth but in 1881 when my grandfather was 10. George W. Linson, her husband died in1880. They are buried at Richmond Grove cemetery. Does anyone live near this cemetery who could check to see if their birthdates are listed on the stones? Marge in Nebraska
Can anybody extract some of the material for German newspaper that was published in Lincoln? Joan Lund j-lund@uiuc.edu
There were some BIG snows when I was a little girl. We have pictures where the snow is above my head as I pose beside it with my dog. It was not unusual for me to miss a week or two of school at a time because the bus could not get through. And, as you know, <g> I am not THAT old. However, this BIG snow was between Christmas and New Year's in 1830-31. They got about three feet. Yep. About 36"!! Sorry to send the whole thread back. There was a German Newspaper called the "Ostfriesische Nachrichten" published in Breda, Iowa by Pastor L. Hundling from 1882 to the time of his death, and then by others unthe the 1950's. Most of these names and date of deaths were compiled into a book called "East Friesen Roots" by Kenneth H. De Wall and if you find your ancestor listed in there, he will transcribe the obituary for $5.00 the first name, $4.00 each for two or more. Marcia
When was the Big Snow? I have diary references to several large snows that occurred between 1910 and 1919. Rootsweb needs financial support. Why should you help? What do you get from Rootsweb? If you are reading this message you are using Rootsweb. Every time you go to the web page you are using Rootsweb. They donate the space for both FREE so it can be made available to all. They provide space for over 6,300 mailing lists, some geographic like this and others surnames. There is even a medieval genealogy list that works for genealogy and history types. If you haven't checked out the lists you should. They also provide space for the GenConnect surname query boards. Have you checked those out lately? They provide space for CindisList, THE list of genealogy links. The list grows. All of this is FREE to you, the user. If they slap on a monthly or annual fee it would limit this resource to an elite group. So it will remain free. But if you use it and you can contribute please consider it. http://www.rootsweb.com Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com Coordinator, Logan County, ILGenWeb Project http://www.rootsweb.com/~illogan/loindex.htm Logan County mailing list> LOGAN-L-request@rootsweb.com Downing mailing list> DOWNING-L-request@rootsweb.com Harding mailing list> HARDING-L-request@rootsweb.com Downing query board> http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Downing Lucas query board> http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Lucas
That list isn't accurate in terms of cemetery inscriptions AVAILABLE. Check out the cemetery list on the web site. However, available and online are NOT the same. There are two listings online that I know of, Lawndale Union [which is accessed from the archives page on the web site since it didn't go through us] and Edgell-Barnes [which is accessed from the cemeteries page]. After you check out the cemeteries page on the Logan web site go to the lookups page and you will see a person who will look up names in the cemetery listings book if asked to. Also, several members of this list will do lookups. Correction: Someone should have corrected me when I said there were no towns in Sheridan Township. New Holland is in Sheridan Township. I could only find one cemetery with transcriptions on line. Is there a way to get to other cemetery transcriptions on-line? I just found out yesterday that my great-grandmother was Sarah McBride Linson who gave birth to my grandfather 3 Nov 1871 and died in childbirth. They lived in Sheridan TWP, he was born at Burtonview. Could someone tell me if Sarah is buried near there? Thanks for the help. Wow!! I think it's terrific. The format is very easy to read.
Cheryl: I thought the articles were fantastic! My g.grandparents were in Lincoln in that time frame and just obtained the obits on them and it stated on his, he was an ex-street commissioner - so I was scanning those names like crazy. I can't find anything on this because I don't know when he was in that position - city hall doesn't have personnel records back that far. So yes, I think it's great.
