Do you know what years the census records from the Logan Genealogical Society cover? Marge F
Hi: I'm Marge Farmer and I have some Morris ancestors in Lincoln, Logan Co., IL. My grandmother was Effie Jane MORRIS m. to Francis M. RAMSBURG. Effie was the child of Lemeul MORRIS and Sarah Ann RICHARDS. You had MORRIS I in Index 1 & 2.
Possibly Aunt Lela could help you? Please email me PRIVATELY. Just woke up and actually read every word on the first page of the latest Logan Roots and Branches, the publication of the Logan County Genealogical & Historical Society. It says they have "Census Records for Logan County, Illinois" -- softbound 8 1/2 by 11, 343 pages, two volumes, $15, included mailing costs. I didn't know that! 11 Arcade Court, Lincoln, IL 62626-2743. Please mention you saw it here. I'm trying to promote more cooperation from them. Interesting that your index does not include most of the lines I have! Did you cover a specific part or are all these people directly related to you [all the dogs and cats <g>] or what? The ones below are definitely in my line, particularly the Woods, Winans and Woodruff. Shellhammer is the guy my greatgreat grandmother married after my same greats grandfather died in the Civil War. He was her hired man. Obviously she was lonely and needed help with all the land she had. >Index #1: BUCKLES, SCROGGINS, SHELLHAMMER, WOODS >INDEX#2: COPELAND, WINANS, WOODRUFF [were those last two in Logan County or just Clark ancestors?] Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com
Interesting. Thanks. If your clippings have a date we MIGHT be able to determine what paper they came from. They seem to have changed hands and names a lot. Perhaps you'd like to transcribe some of the clippings, particularly any with lots of names or those with general interest, for the Old News page? One of my relatives [not Downing though] married a Deibert. Historically one Downing married a Deibert. Haven't checked to see if the two are related. Your Aunt Lela is my Aunt Lela and living at Vonderlieth in Mt. Pulaski! Floyd Downing was my grandfather's youngest brother. Lela would probably love to see the pictures. She's a bit feeble but quite sharp. Her only son lives in Springfield, a widower. Her granddaughter lives with him. The grandson is married but I think he also lives in Springfield. My grandmother was Anna May IRVING (born 11-1-1888 Elkhart area, died 12-7-1987, married John LERCHER 6-8-02), daughter of James Thomas (JT) IRVING (born 12-8-1856 Buffalo Hart, died 5-4-1937 Cornland) and Sarah Catherine McCUE (born 10-13-1859 Buffalo Hart, died 4-14-1932 Cornland). Sarah's parents were Bertrand, Bernard, Barnie McCUE (born 2-2-1831 Ireland or Minnesota, died 4-25-1909 Cornland) married 11-25-1858 to Anna CHANCE ( born 1-10-1841 Ohio, died 7-5-1924 Cornland) JT's parents were William Barton IRVING (born Scotland, died 10-26-1879 Buffalo Hart) married 6-22-1854 to Margarette ROSS (born 1836 Scotland, died 5-18-1902 Cornland) I haven't been able to get much information on Barnie although he was reputed to be a real character. I'd love to nail him down. Any help is appreciated. Darlene
Lois, I am looking for Joseph Wilbanks migrated to Logan from Jefferson about 1855 or so. I believe he died in Logan County between 1910 and 1920. Thanks for any help. I really appreciate all the work you are doing. At the bottom of your message I noticed the Downing name. My grandmother's sister married a Downing. Aunt Lela James Irving, born 10-27-1900, married Floyd Downing 3-1-1920. They had a daughter Lela Janette. I have loads of pictures of Aunt Lela and the family. Let me know if there is a link. Hi Darlene, I am sending this list of surnames in my Logan County Index in hopes that you might find something you can use. In a book by Gwen Suttory Rosenfield, "ECHOES FROM THE BRANCHES" She tells of the "big snow of 1830-31 - It began in Nov. of1830 and continued to fall until Jan. 1831 with very little intermissions: the temperature got no higher than 12 below. It ruined all the corn crops which had just reached maturity, watermills were frozen, almost all stock perished, all fruit trees died, and the settlers tell us this area was by far the greatest by far for raising fruit, but after the big snow it never regained its prestige. The snow finally ended with three feet on the level ground and at places there were fifteen to twenty foot drifts. There has never been another snow so deep and fierce as this one in Logan Co.." This is an interesting book about the area around Elkhart. The newspaper articles are real interesting also. My Grandfather was a Minister in the area and sent my mother lots of cuttings from the papers, weddings, obits, etc, which she kept in two scrapbooks. The only problem is I have no idea which papers they were from. Although some did mention the Herald. Keep up the good work - Maxine
Hi again, Forgot to tell you that if you've traced your family back before they came to Logan County, maybe I can help. I have 6 volumes of early Va marriages, vols. 1&2 of Southern Relatives, Abstracts of Wills, Inventories and Administrations Accounts of Frederick Co Va.and Phelps Co. Mo. Tombstone Inscriptions (3 vols), Phelps Co. Mo. Birth and death records (1 vol). All of these are indexed so easy to check. I do have lots of cemetery records for Athens Co. Oh and misc. records for that co. Also have the "History of Athens Co. Oh." not indexed, and "History of Wayne Co. Oh" and "Records of Emigrants from England and Scotland to North Carolina" and "Index to Wills in South Carolina" not indexed but can check if you have ties there. If any of these books or my index of Logan County families can help you let me know. Would love to help
Hi Darlene, I don't have Downing in my index but the name sure is familiar to me. Do they have ties to the Deibert family? I wish I had lots of Logan County research material but at the time I wrote my book there wasn't that much available. I have quite a few pages of cemetery records from Logan County and my index has lots of Logan Co names. When I look it over I know what my Dad meant when he said we were related to every dog and cat that ran through the back yard. If you want to send me names in Logan Co. that you are interested in, I will be glad to check them for you. Lois
Lois Branch found an article on Logan County's last surviving Civil War veteran. Unfortunately the date of the article means it is under copyright and can't be used on the web page but in case you are researching any of these names here it is: Logan County's last Civil War veteran is not dead. CHARLES COATES, Sr. of Lake Fork, who on Sunday, March 30, [1941] observed his ninety-third birthday anniversary, is the county's last G.A.R. veteran, despite belief that JOHN C. "Uncle JOHNNY" MIER, of Mount Pulaski, who died at the age of 99 years last July 26, was the last. MR. COATES, who enjoys moderately good health at his advanced years, was a member of company H, third Michigan battery, heavy field artillery, on duty in Ohio in 1863. He recollects vividly seeing many of his comrades killed when JOHN MORGAN'S raiders stormed Marietta and Nelson, Ohio, in Haskins County, at a time when practically all of Co H was destroyed. He enlisted for service shortly before is sixteenth birthday, and was sent to Marshfield, Ohio, not far from his birthplace, Athens. He was born March 30, 1848, the son of James and Mary Fierce Coats, Ohio pioneers, and came to Logan County in 1867, and settled in Lake Fork. He is the father of five children: JOHN and SOLOMON COATES, employed by the state in Springfield; JAMES and CHARLES, JR., Lake Fork, and MRS. BESSIE DUNCAN, Decatur; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He is capable of getting about and working the gardens without the least assistance, and says that he has no physical complaints of any greatness. He is mildly hard of hearing, but otherwise retains a sharp wit and carries on a lively and pointed conversation. To his physical wellbeing today, Mr. COATES attributes the abstinence "from any kind of liquor for 50 ears, tobacco in any form and coffee. I would guess the obituary would be in the Mt. Pulaski Times-News. The state of those files these days is unknown to me. Twenty five years ago they were not bad but the paper has changed hands a couple times since then. There should be a death certificate in the Logan County Clerk's office. One way you might be able to find out if the man is deceased is to check out the Social Security Death Index. It is available online in several places including http://www.ancestry.com If he died and someone filed for death benefits, often the funeral home to apply to the bill these days, he should be listed there. I am a new member to this list and I am trying to help a friend. We are researching the BRADLEY surname. Herman BRADLEY, birthdate/birthplace unknown. We estimate he would now be in his late 80's or early 90's, but we don't know if he is still living. He was in Lake Fork, IL in the 1940's. He was in Will Co., IL about 1951. Herman Bradley had a young son (name and age unknown) who died in a fire in 1944 in Lake Fork, IL. We would like to get a death date and/or obituary for the young son. This may lead us to information about siblings. Is there an Illinois Death Index? In what 1944 newspaper might the obituary appear? Any help or guidance would be truly appreciated. Thank you in advance. Mabel C. Grubbe mgrubbe@thegrid.net
There was a German language newspaper printed in Lincoln. It was called Logan County Volksblatt. There was a second one called the Journal which was merged in to Volksblatt. [Information from the 1878 History.] Apparently both were formed in 1877 and merged by 1878 so the Journal was very short lived.
