    2. Thanks for such a quick response. I would like to find the grandparents of Ralph Edward Cherry. He was my grandfather. Ralph's grandmother (we believe it was his grandmother & not his ggrandmother) was a Creek Indian. No one knows much about her, however my cousin told me there is an unmarked grave in Elkhart cemetery, with some of the other Cherry graves. We think she might be buried there.

    1. [ILLOGAN-L] 1880 Census Transcription
    2. I ordered and have received the census records offered by the Logan County Genealogical & Historical Society. I mailed my check Monday and they were in the mail Saturday. Not bad! They are the 1880 Census records in two volumes. Not bad for $15. I just had a quick look so I could let you know... I looked for Robert Downing in Mt. Pulaski Township. There he is, age 87, a retired farmer, along with his wife Jane, age 78. [The news here is she told the census folks she didn't know where her father was born but her mother was born in England which we did not know.] Also living with them were son 'Harding' [actual name: Harden] and his wife Syletha [actual name: Cynthia] along with their four children and two hired men. Note that these listings are as they appeared BUT some incredibly patient person or persons indexed the whole thing to make life a bit easier. If your ancestors were in Logan County in 1880 I think you want these records. 2. Hi Britta...Did I mention I have a degree in state and local government? Townships in relation to what we were discussing [a map] are geographic. The fact that Illinois hangs on to the archaic <g> township government system doesn't pertain. >There are some critics who believe that township government represents a duplication of tax monies, but supporters believe that some services such as road maintenace are still better provided at the township level. To many citizens, townships may seem to be invisible entities, but to rural dwellers, they are still very real and very important. I'm a critic. I grew up in Mt. Pulaski Township however so I do understand why they are useful to rural residents, not that those duties couldn't be absorbed by the county. I am not going to comment on road maintenance in Logan County... This really isn't the place. 3. Hello Cheryl...I was just checking some old messages and I read yours of April 28. Townships in Illinois are governmental units. We live in Chester Township and elect township officials. Especially important is the Road Commissioner. The town of Atlanta is in Eminence Township;Beason is in Oran Township; Mt. Pulaski is in Mt. Pulaski township and some towns straddle two townships. There are some critics who believe that township government represents a duplication of tax monies, but supporters believe that some services such as road maintenace are still better provided at the township level. To many citizens, townships may seem to be invisible entities, but to rural dwellers, they are still very real and very important. Thank you. Britta B. 3. As I am transcribing the DeWitt County 1882 History, I wonder if anyone can see if the law below is still a valid law? I also wonder how many of us cannot find a marriage record due to this law???? Quoting from the History: This marriage union has a history, and we will therefore give an account of it in detail. It occurred at the cabin of the bride's father in the time of the "deep snow," when this part of DeWitt county formed a portion of Macon. Thomas Davenport was detailed to procure the license at the then county seat; Decatur, but was obliged to turn back on account of the water caused by the melting of the snow at that time. They were accordingly married under a section of the statute which reads as follows: "All persons belonging to any religious society, church, or denomination, may celebrate their marriage according to the rules and principles of such religious society, church, or denomination, providing the bonds of marriage are published in the church or congregation at least two weeks prior to such union." It may not be generally known, but this law has never been repealed, and is yet in full force in the state of Illinois. 3. Does anyone have any reference material on a McBRIDE family? My great-grandmother was Sarah E. McBride Linson b. 1828 and d. 1881. She is buried at Richmond Grove Cemetery along with my great-grandfather, George Washington Linson. I am trying to find out who her parents were. In reading Barnes-Edgell Cemetery inscriptions today, I noticed a Robert McBride, who died in 1869. Could this be Sarah's father? It also lists two young girls, Amanda and Elizabeth, who died at the ages of 15 and 18. What's unusual is that they died on the same day. Elizabeth says dau of but doesn't give any more info. Does anyone know what family they came from? Perhaps, it lists more in the cemetery book. I'd certainly appreciate any data you can tell me on this family. Marge in Nebraska

    2. >From ancestry.com... If interested go there today. It won't be free long. Jasper County, Illinois Marriage Index, 1850-1920 Established in 1831, Jasper County is located in east-central Illinois, about twenty miles from the Wabash River. This database is a collection of records compiled between 1850 and 1920 and contains the names of over 13,500 men and women married in the county. In addition to providing the marriage date, researchers will find the issue date of the marriage license. To those seeking Illinois ancestors who were married in Jasper County, this can be an illuminating collection of records. Bibliography: Behunin, Penny, ed. "Jasper County Marriage Index."
