Great work Earliene. I have just completed transcribing the Biographies from the 1882 History as well as the township histories from the same book. These mention many people from the surrounding counties so you may want to go have a look under "From the Histories" on the main page index. Hope you find something helpful. Cheryl, I think the book I looked at was put out by the Logan Society. It lists by plot, hard to read, hard to find what you are looking for. I am the one who gave the phone number in Atlanta. The cemetery is very nicely keep up. We visited there several times last fall. Just a reminder. In addition to IGI, the LDS online site contains the Family History Library catalog. http://www.familysearch.org/Search/searchcatalog.asp A search for Logan in Illinois located 21 books. You can look at details for any publication but you will have to order it through your FHC. I expect you can search for, say, Atlanta as part of Illinois. Two different subjects. One is the contributed database which will be up shortly for contributions and searches...at least the marriage record part. The second is vital records from the state in conjunction with the ISGS, again, the marriage record part to start, which have basically been approved to go but not funded. The state's current servers cannot handle the added load. You may have noted they bog down sometimes with the present load. When this funding will come is not known. That may not be the PR version but that's basically it. They are hoping it will be this year but... You would only contribute names and dates, not an article. I might contribute William Nelson Downing m. Delilah Jane Downing Feb. 27, 1862, in Logan County, IL, to the marriage file. I wouldn't contribute William to the birth file because he was born in Ohio. He died in Arkansas while in the 106th Infantry during the Civil War, not an Illinois death but certainly Illinois related. Not sure how they will handle that. Delilah's birth could be contributed to the birth file and her death to the death file. Fine you say. My information is accurate. But Janie who 'heard' her great grandmother was born in Logan County could contribute too -- no way to know if that a contribution is accurate. That's contributed information as opposed to verified, researched or whatever. Thanks Joan. We are going to get [through ILGenWeb] a place to post Illinois marriages [and perhaps death and birth] and it will be searchable. Affirmative on the Illinois Marriage Records. This information came from Dr. Daley at the ISGS Board meeting on Saturday but no time frame was established. The funding of the project will be the next step. With other data bases currently on the server, it simply will not handle the load of adding the marriage records at this time. Death records? I need to check on this. Joan At 06:15 PM 5/18/99 -0400, you wrote: >I was given this information. I hope it is true. I received an inquiry about various census records. It is not surprising people are confused. You could take a course on the census alone -- there's a lot to know if you are serious. The first official US census was in 1790 and they have been conducted every ten years since. The first census for Logan County would be 1840 [it was created in 1839]. In 1830 it was part of Sangamon as it was in 1820. There were not more than a handful of people in what is now Logan County in 1820 and there is no guarantee they were counted. The first censuses, through 1840, list heads of household only. The 1850 and subsequent censuses list everyone in each household [in theory anyway]. The majority of the 1890 census was destroyed by the government after a fire in 1921. The records apparently weren't actually burnt, just destroyed because it was too much work to clean up and sort out. The government has a method for releasing census data that is supposed to protect privacy. They have released all the census data through the 1920 census. I forget when they are going to release the 1930 census -- not that far into the future. One of the easiest ways to determine the information available in each census is to find the forms for transcribing each one. They are available online and in many books on genealogy. In addition to the federal census records there are Illinois' census records. Those run every ten years from 1825-1865. They are indexed -- although the 1865 index is not complete -- at the state archives. You can request information via email. Go to the state archives web site for more information about census and other holdings. http://www.sos.state.il.us/depts/archives If that address doesn't work [and it doesn't for some people] use http://www.sos.state.il.us/ and then click on archives. The 1840 Census is done. It is in the que for posting on the Rootsweb server. The 1850 Census is in progress but due to a mixup it won't be done for another month or so. It too will end up on the web courtesy of four list members. If you want your own copy of the CD you will be able to buy them. Wait until both are done though -- it might be that you will be able to get both on one CD. I inquired about the 1830 Sangamon County census. Estimate for doing that one is $120-140 initially. That's because Sangamon included a lot of the state at that time. I have a couple people interested in this census -- at $20 each we would need six or seven contributors. Email me privately if you are interested.
