    1. [ILLOGAN-L] 1840/1850 Census CD
    2. BTW, anyone who would like to have their own personal copy of the 1840 and 1850 census images on CD can purchase one from S-K for $20. Normally they only have one census year on the CD but because these these two are fairly small they put them together for us. I know the 1850 census is done but they haven't been put online yet. I suppose the folks responsible for that took off for the holiday like everyone else. <g> I'll let you know as soon as they tell me they are up. 1. Re: [ILLOGAN-L] MY HASTY REPLY
    2. Sue -- My hide is tough. <g> I haven't read your submissions [or anyone else's] yet...and I'm probably not going to get to them today. There are things I can get around and things I can't. I am working on a way to post basic outline genealogies [NOT on Rootsweb or USGenWeb] of our Logan County lines for the sole purpose of comparing notes and finding others searching the same names. Because of space limitations it would consist of something along the lines of name of first ancestor in that line who came to Logan County and then the names/dates down to your, say, grandparent or the person who left Logan County. I don't want any living people's information published. I'm still working it out. If you are interested in this let me know. 1. [ILLOGAN-L] MY HASTY REPLY
    2. Sorry to vent on you for something you probably can't control. It seems like a shame to me that some bios are passed up in this manner. Particularly since Logan County does not have a good supply of them. My Logan County ancestors (and connections) were solid, respectable people, and I want to share that with others who are looking. I hope my submissions will be acceptable. Please accept my apology for taking your explanation personally. Sincerely, Sue A. Ridenhour.

    1. Re: [ILLOGAN-L] Submissions
    2. The biography of John Washington Hawes was probably written by his son, Henry Clay Hawes, who was a great writer. It contains many facts that would be interesting to people with early pioneer connections in Logan County, Illinois. In addition, it is also a heartwarming account of a man clearly esteemed by his son. It is a terrific read! and I feel I am totally unbiased in this as I am not related to the Hawes in any way. My 4th great grandmother, Esther Allen Musick Ewing, married 2nd John Washington Hawes. I am descended from her first marriage. I am very fortunate that I was able to obtain photocopies of several biographies written by and about the Hawes. They were early Logan County settlers and married early Logan County settlers and I think whether they contain "a bit of genealogy" or not, "a little puff" or not, they are a good find for your web site. When I go to a county genealogy web site I hope the biographies contained therein will include genealogies. Would I like genealogy included in a biography about Abraham Lincoln? You bet! Particularly if I had ancestors in the area. Why do we search far and wide for obituaries except that they give us this important lineage data in addition to dates and places. Your explanation, I must say, put me off quite a bit. It was insensitive to someone who believed they were providing your web site with valuable historical and genealogical data for others to share in. And who are we to say what is "puffed up?" My regret is that there isn't a more appropriate place to send these biographies to. Sincerely, Sue A. Ridenhour.

    1. Re: [ILLOGAN-L] Submissions
    2. Bios need to contain more than genealogy. Would you expect a lot of genealogy in a bio of, say, Abraham Lincoln? Puff piece is a journalism term for someone's bio or write up of someone which is designed to show how wonderful they are more than anything else. As to yours I can't say -- I haven't gotten to all of those submitted this weekend. Are they items that were published somewhere as opposed to someone's personal history of grandma? Do they deal in facts or just personal opinion? Do they give historical information or just genealogy? 2. About biographies - I have found that not only biographies but obituaries from the 1800's usually were lengthy and the people were described as fantastic -- just GREAT at everything! I feel that much was added in since the papers covered mostly local items -- they did not have the instant world news as we do today. marlyn

    1. [ILLOGAN-L] Submissions
    2. Hope you all are having/had a nice holiday. It's 95° here and my brain is soggy. Some of you have been busy genealogists this long weekend and have uploaded bios, obits and the like. Because of the overload it will no doubt be awhile before I get to all of them. I was NOT a busy genealogist this weekend. In fact, this is the first time I've signed on. :-) Also, please note that we do NOT use genealogies or genealogies attempting to pose as bios, obits, etc. This isn't my rule, although I don't disagree with it, but the USGenWeb and Rootsweb rules. We also do not use 'puff pieces.' Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com

    1. Re: [ILLOGAN-L] Submissions
    2. I have a question on what genealogies posing as bios are? What are puff pieces? Are mine these type that cannot be submitted? I can certainly chop up the histories I sent in, but I feel it would be a shame. Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Sue A. Ridenhour.

    2. I don't know what software you are using but PAF 4.0 is now available as a free download. This is the new Windows version of the original Mormon genealogy software. Readers of these lists probably already have their favorite software but this might just the ticket for someone just starting out. The price is right and [remembering back to version 2] it is not a difficult program to use. At the moment it is available at: http://www.familysearch.org Click on "What's New."
