Joan: Thanks for replying. I found the answer to one of my questions. It was whether or not the marriage index was available on line. Missed the answer the first time, someone else found it for me. My next question is do you think the Illinois Marriage Index would be available at the State of Michigan Library? I am going there tomorrow and wonder how widely it is published, or if I would be able to get it thru inter-library loan from Springfield. Thanks Marge Farmer

According to a family writeup in the 1982 History of Logan County, Logan David Edwards (1887-1966) came to Logan County from Kentucky in 1906. He first served as a farm hand near Middletown. In 1915 he married Mary Elizabeth Hall. They lived on a farm and he also worked as a coal miner for 19 years. In 1947, he purchased a farm between Mt. Pulaski and Elkhart. Two children are reported 1. Charlotte Virginia Edwards married Marshall Key 2. Eugene Hall Edwards married Rachel Zook. The story lists a number of 3rd and 4th generation descendants, raised around Beason, Illinois. If anyone wants a copy of the writeup, send me an address to mail it to. My e-mail is Girwin35@worldnet.att.net
If Joan Black Lund is on this list I would appreciate an e-mail. I have a couple of questions about the Illinois Marriage list. Thanks. Marge Farmer margef@sensible-net.com
Cheryl, Jeremiah BIRKS was said to have fought in the Winnebago War. That is how he received his title "Captain" according to George FLOWERS history of his visit with Jeremiah. This war took place about 1827 and as far as I can tell, it was against the Native Americans who were raiding the settlers up and down the midwest (IL, MN, etc.). Jeremiah was said to have been a scout or something up on the Canadian border. Thanks for the address of the Black Hawk War roster. Cheryl, I've recently discovered that the men in my family should have all registered by the third draft in 1918. Do you know of anyone who might have info about WWI draft registrations for Logan Co.? Carol
I had a friend, growing up in Mt. Pulaski, named Richard Edwards. He lived down by the Leigion Home. I think his family was an old time Pulaski family. JOHN D. WILHAM
Does anyone on this list know where I can find an on-line roster for the Winnebago War and/or the Black Hawk War? Thanks, Laurie HisServants@prodigy.net
There's a link to the State Archives Black Hawk War listings on the main page of the web site. Winnebago is a new one to me. I ran a search on the Black Hawk War listings some time back, believe I found some of the Birks line - at least it was one of those lines connected to Birks. Was Edwards the last name? I used to know a fellow named Logan Edwards. He was old when I was young so the age would be about right. I don't know anything about his family though, only that I believe they lived over on the Elkhart blacktop. He raised bees on our property, down on the old home site. If you think this is the family I'll ask my cousin if he knows anything about them when he returns from Oklahoma next week. You are the first to ask on the list although several have asked exactly the same thing in email. S-K Publications is the company that creates computer readable images from the census microfilms. Several folks here have donated to cover the costs of doing that for three censuses. Since it is already done they now offer the images on CD to anyone for $20. They are giving a combined 1840/1850 census on one CD. There will be one for the 1830 Sangamon census when that is done. In return for us paying to having it done S-K is donating a copy of the images to the USGenWeb Archives so they will be online and free to all, one of our purposes here. I personally would say if you only have one or two lines in the census use the free images online. If you have many lines as I do it is handy to have the CD at home. You can probably manipulate the images a little better if you own the CD but I haven't tried that with the online images so I'm not sure. I put a link to the census images on the main page of the web site. I can't seem to locate anything for you but I know my grandmother had a dear friend named Edwards. This would have been in the 1920s approximately in the Mt. Pulaski area. If I find more about that branch I will send it.
Forgive my ignorance, but what is S-K?
Hi, This might explain the birth of my grandfather being born in 1887 and his parents being married in Logan County in 1889. Had always wondered about that. Keep up the great work Cheryl, we appreciate you. Lois Branch
I never thought about this before, but I bet you're right. That would explain a few early births? Thanks!

I just read something about how folks on the prairie [and other pioneer areas] went on with their lives and when the preacher came around they formalized weddings, funerals and the like. This, of course, means many children born before legal marriage. I had noted this in several of my lines in Logan County in the 1830s and I wondered if others had noted this also. Of course, we only have the dates of the legal marriage. Perhaps they had some sort of ceremony with family but without benefit of preacher? Any ideas or information?
