    1. [ILLOGAN-L] Searching the Databases
    2. The state archives databases can be confusing and they are NOT consistent. For example, to search the Black Hawk War database the location is SANGAMON -- there was no Logan County at that time and they didn't list them by town. In the Civil War you can pick a town but be aware that some enlisted from 'Salt Creek' and such, not a town. Punctuation can be a problem too. A search in the Spanish American War database for Mt. Pulaski gets nothing but Mt [no period] Pulaski produces: Result of search for "Mt Pulaski". NAME RANK COMPANY & UNIT RESIDENCE - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------- ARMSTRONG, DELBERT H PVT K 1 IL CAV MT PULASKI BOSTIC, JOHN PVT K 1 IL CAV MT PULASKI BOYER, WILLIAM E PVT K 1 IL CAV MT PULASKI CLARK, EZRA PVT K 1 IL CAV MT PULASKI CONNOLLY, WILLIAM E PVT K 1 IL CAV MT PULASKI FIELD, GEORGE D PVT K 1 IL CAV MT PULASKI HAYES, IBETH R PVT K 1 IL CAV MT PULASKI HAYNES, LEE V PVT K 1 IL CAV MT PULASKI HELLER, CHARLES A PVT K 1 IL CAV MT PULASKI HOWARD, WILLIAM H SAD K 1 IL CAV MT PULASKI INGRAM, CALVIN A PVT K 1 IL CAV MT PULASKI MILLER, JOHN E PVT K 1 IL CAV MT PULASKI STINSON, JAMES W PVT M 9 IL INF MT PULASKI The moral is here is play around with them. At the time I couldn't find the copy I had but now it has turned up. My example is from Company G of the 106th Infantry. They send you both pages, rather like the census images with a right and left page. Those at the top of the list are fairly easy to read -- a magnifying glass is useful -- but as they progress down the page [at least in my example] it gets worse to impossible near the bottom. Of course, I asked for the what turned out to be the first name on the page so perhaps they weren't too concerned about doing the bottom right for me. Here's what it tells me: Downing, George H., rank private, age 29, 5'10" tall, dark hair, blue eyes, fair complexion, married, a carpenter, born Pike County, OH, enrolled Aug 5, 1862, by Benj Williams, for three years, mustered in Sept 14, 1862, at Lincoln by Lt. ?, residence Lincoln, Logan County, IL, bunch of columns ignored, mustered out July 12, 1865, Pine Bluff, AR, by Lt. ?, remarks promoted Corpl. This is quite different from the National Archives records which were basically bimonthly check in sheets. I got a few more pages on my great great grandfather but only because he died and they had to fill out more forms, one certifying the death and saying he had been paid and the other inventorying his effects. 2. >From the State Archives web site: Photocopies Since the Archives record series, Black Hawk War Records (RS 301.007) has been found to be grossly inaccurate, the Archives provides copies of the soldier's entry in Whitney's book. For each veteran, the book's entries generally include name, rank, unit, place and dates of enrollment, and remarks concerning his service. The information following the rolls includes additional history on the unit and its individuals. As a result of limitations on staff research time, no more than two names can be searched per request. When making a request, please include your postal mailing address as well as the soldier's name, unit, place of enrollment, and war of service. I remember when I was small (in grade school), that there were still people by the name of Capps living in Mt. Pulaski. Perhaps a letter to someone older than I am (60) would bring results. You might try Bill Bryson or John Bates of Mt. Pulaski Township Historical Society. Somehow, I remember Capps as owning a greenhouse or other business. JOHN WILHAM

    2. The 1878 History of Logan County is available from the Logan County G&H Society. There is a reprint company that will do the Stringer history. Actually that is two volumes. It is pricey. I am not familiar with >HISTORY OF LOGAN CO. IL (Inter-State pub. Co., Chicago, 1886) What is 125 Yesteryears? There was the Green book and maybe this is the paper Harry Wible put out? Never mind, I pulled out my copy. 125 Yesteryears of Mt. Pulaski is indeed Harry's souvenir edition of the Times News. I had no idea the name. It is interesting but I don't know if it is particularly useful. The Green book is another story. [officially: AND SHE HELD FORTH HER HAND by Emagene Veech Green -- always referred to as 'the Green book' for its green cover as well as Emagene's name]. You are allowed to ask this question. The rule is you can't sell anything on the list. I saw nothing about buying. I am going to suggest you check out the Sangamon County pages. There's a link on the Logan pages, neighboring counties, if you don't have the address. Go to the pages which link to books and check the listing where it says something like "I want them all" for the reprints of the Stringer histories. 1. Re: [ILLOGAN-L] CAPPS and ROACH
    2. The Capp that is a Logan County original is Jabez and he settled in Mt. Pulaski. They came from England and apparently went first to the Springfield area before Jabez left for better country [take that Mary Ann! <g>] in what was to become Logan County. The original generation, including Jabez, would be too old for this person. I looked through Jabez' genealogy and I don't see any Roaches or G. W.s. However, the Capps family included the following children: Jabez, Ebenzer, Mary Ann, Susan, Sarah, John, Charles, Benjamin, Thomas. The 1878 Logan County history has a George Capps but he was living in in Mt. Pulaski and was a child. There are quite a few Roaches. I note the Capps have two children living with them, not Capps. They could be children of deceased relatives although two with two different surnames tends to point toward service workers I would think. 1. [ILLOGAN-L] State Archives Records
    2. The state has copies of the state censuses of 1820, 1825, 1830, 1835, 1840, 1845, 1855, 1865. [I don't think there was an 1850 or 1860.] These might be useful in tracking folks who fall into the cracks between censuses. http://www.sos.state.il.us/depts/archives/serv_sta.html Here's an example: STATE CENSUS. 1865. 35 vols. Partial index. The 1865 population census for Illinois was compiled in each county by census commissioners appointed by the county commissioners courts and filed with the Secretary of State. The census was authorized under an 1845 act, as amended in 1855 (Rev. Stat. 1845, p. 89; L. 1855, p. 151). Each county return includes for each household name of head of household; numbers of free white males and females in each decennial age group (e.g., ages 0-9, 10-19, 20-29); numbers of male and female Negroes; total number of inhabitants in household; number of males eligible for duty in state militia; type (e.g., blacksmith shop, wheelwright shop) and valuation of products of manufacturing establishments; valuations of livestock, grain products, and other agricultural products; tons of coal produced annually; pounds of wool products; and numbers of flour and gristmills, sawmills, and distilleries. Also included in each return are numbers of universities, academies, grammar schools, and common schools and number of pupils enrolled in each. Each return also includes signature of census commissioner certifying return, date certified, and occasional recapitulations of totals. Legal subdivisions also are indicated such as cities, towns, and townships and recapitulations frequently are given for them. Returns are included for the following counties: <snip - it includes Logan> 1865 This final state census (R.S. 103.010) currently is indexed only partially. County and township residences are necessary for efficient searches. Searches of unindexed townships with populations exceeding 2,500 cannot be performed because of limitations on staff research time. Again only the names of the heads of households are given. Guidelines for Research at the Illinois State Archives Genealogical research inquiries regarding state and related federal governmental records should be directed to: Illinois State Archives Reference Unit Margaret Cross Norton Building Capitol Complex Springfield, IL 62756 Telephone: (217) 782-3556 Fax: (217) 524-3930 The Archives welcomes inquiries. Researchers can request copies of documents by mail, by fax, by telephone, or by personal visit. A number of the Archives' record series holdings are particularly useful to the genealogist and many have been indexed for rapid access. Archives reference staff will search these indexed records and provide unofficial and uncertified photocopies of requested records. In making requests please follow the guidelines below. Request no more than two specific names or items per mailing. For name searches try to provide 1) the individual's complete name, age, and birthplace, 2) county and township names, and 3) the name of the record to be searched as well as its date span. 1. [ILLOGAN-L] Houston/Hueston
    2. Atlanta is not my strong point. Any number of folks here know more about the Atlanta area than I do, have researched there and so forth. It sounds like this family was only in Logan County very briefly. By 1870 they were in Kansas -- I assume that means you found them on the census. Have you checked the 1860 Logan census to see if they were in Logan County then? Can you link them to another family -- why did they stop in Logan County at all? Have you checked Rootweb to see if there are surname mailing lists for Hueston/Houston? You never know where you might find information. Also look for a GenConnect board. You can use the surname resource page there also. http://surhelp.rootsweb.com/srchall.html is a place where you can search all sorts of places for the surname of your choice. There is always World Family Tree, Family Tree Maker and similiar pages. Keep in mind that that information is only as good as the submitter. However, you might get some leads. Ditto the LDS site. While there run a check through their IGI files -- those are legitimate sources. I read the genealogy stuff online beginning in 1987 on CompuServe. I made a Clark connection about 1991 and then nothing until early 1998...at the same time I hit the mother lode offline on two different lines. Frankly, I had about given up on some of those lines. Now I have more information than I can get entered. You have to just hang in there... That reminds me, I should post a couple queries myself...
