The Estate Record Index is an index of Sangamon County Probate Estates 1-6684, 1821-1907. It is an alphabetical listing and contains 66 pages. Remember, only those 1821 through 1838 pertain to residents of Logan County. This book costs $8. Like other records indexed, some records [1-3304 so all that we are interested in in Logan County] are available at IRAD in Springfield, not Normal. They may also be available from the Circuit Clerk's Office in Springfield. Copies from IRAD, I believe, are cheaper although that may have changed. Check first. Addresses are in the book. [In all of these books read the preface first. They are generally well done and useful.] While on that subject let me tell you a bit about probate records. I contacted the appropriate party in Logan County regarding a probate record and she said she'd copy the will and mail it to me. I read it and commented on a legal error in it to my college friend who is an attorney and who happens to live in Lincoln these days. She went to the court house and pulled the record. There was more information in the file. Be sure to ask for what you want, not just the will. The will may have been contested, for example. There are quite a few reasons why the end result may not have been what the will says. The preface warns, however, that these records may be extremely long [remember, they are handwritten] and the cost may get out of hand if you ask for everything sight unseen. Example: Lucas, Thomas 101 Sorry, can't think of too many folks in my line that died by 1839. I prefer to use someone I know information on as a check. There's the name and the case number. The year is not listed. Be careful -- could be the same name but in 1850 and not your ancestor! The Index to Guardian's Case Files 1825-1901, 1910-1911 for Sangamon County is 26 pages long and is an alphabetical listing. It costs $7. The preface says it contains 2,474 names, generally deceased parents, sometimes an incompetent person. The preface explains what records are available. The book does not contain the records, only a list of them. The records themselves are at IRAD in Springfield [NOT Normal where Logan County records reside]. The index was compiled by IRAD interns. Examples: Lucas, Thomas 139 1834 In this example Thomas Lucas is deceased [he died in 1831 -- I don't have the date of death of his wife handy - she was a Hoblit]. The case number is 139 and the year is 1834. That's all the information you are going to get but it confirms the record and you can order the actual records from IRAD. Since IRAD wants details to do a search this book would be helpful in providing them. Remember, after February 1839 the listings do not include Logan County so the window here is 1825-1838 really. The Sangamon County Genealogical Society has a transcription of the 1830 Federal Census of Sangamon County. It is 72 pages long and costs $7.50. It is indexed. Here's an example: page 24/158 [being the numbers on the left/right sides of the microfilm page] Robert Downing 1-1-1-0-0-1 1-0-0-0-1 Obviously, you need a guide to the census to determine what that means. In this case the first set of numbers has to do with males by age and the second set has to do with females by age. Some folks may have more digits than others. I haven't checked those numbers against Robert's children at the time in detail although my records indicate he would have had four at the time, two boys and two girls and this indicates three boys and one girl. In fact, it is just enough different that I would consider it might be the wrong Robert except that the next person on the list is his brother-in-law James Morrow and then there are the Buckles, Birks, Scroggins, Lucases and Turners on the same page. In fact, it makes my wonder if he had an older son we aren't aware of! It could also be an error of the census taker or an error in transcription. I believe this book would be a useful addition when studying the 1830 Sangamon County census images either online or on your copy of the CD or on microfilm. Did your ancestors arrive in Logan County before 1839? Then perhaps you should look to SANGAMON County for information. On the Sangamon County web page -- you will find it and other counties from 'neighboring counties' link on the main web page -- there is a link for the Sangamon County Genealogical Society. In reviewing their listings I found several that seemed to be useful and I ordered them. They have arrived and I will be sharing information in a sort of mini review as my energy allows. All of these books contain information in the public domain: several of the books are copyrighted. Hey Logan County List readers, I'd be interested in connecting with anyone researching the above surnames. My family has a long history in Logan County-beginning just after the Black Hawk War. They came from Jessamine County, KY, and I think a bunch of them arrived around the same time. My Arends line is more recent. Minos Arends immigrated from East Frisia in the 1860's. He was young, like 14. He married into the Waters line. Hope to hear from some "cuz" out there. Jan
I have sent for and received records of my gggrandfather's pension application for service in the Black Hawk War. There is a two volume book with the pension application numbers for the Indian Wars. The next time I go to the Historical Society I will copy the information from the title page to pass along. Carole Tremaglio
There is another Logan County query page now in place where you can post. Messages are threaded. Some people prefer this. At the moment the system is fairly new and not well known. I advise posting there and on the query web page -- I don't think you can post too many places when you are searching. When you get to the page you will see there is a whole suite of places to post for Logan County. I am going to suggest going to the query page and using the links there. You can post biographies, wills, obits, Bible records, deeds and pension records but NOT queries on those links. Copyright rules apply, just as they do on the web page. Biographies and obits should be copied just as they appeared in print [before this date in 1924]. Include the source name and date to avoid any problems. When in doubt I have to throw it out. Wills, deeds and pension records are pretty much public record and not covered by copyright. The Civil War pension records are what have the next of kin and other great information on them, however I don't know where to get them from. The purpose of a certified copy, I assume, would be for DAR or some such. No point that I can see in this case. The material on the Black Hawk War is, apparently from Ellen Whitney's 'The Black Hawk War, 1831-32,' Vol 1. Other published works include [no, I don't know where you can find them]: Isaac Elliott, 'Record of the Services of Illinois Soldiers in the Black Hawk War....' Springfield: H. W. Rokker, 1902 Illinois Adjutant General's Office, 'Record of the Services of Illinois Soldiers in the Black Hawk War...' Springfield: H. W. Rokker, 1882 You could check the LDS web site for their card catalog and see if any of these books are available in SLC. The National Archives Military Reference Branch under RG 94 Adjutant General's Office has military records for the period 1780's-1917. As I understand it these records are only available in DC in the same building but separate from the main National Archives. I could find nothing in 'Printed Sources' on records of this war. Morgan Park is a community on the SW Chicago. Probably in 1880 it was a separate town. I had a college roommate from Morgan Park. According to the State Archives birth records after 1916 should be available from both the Illinois Department of Public Health, Division of Vital Records, and the Logan County Clerk. There are no Logan County birth or death records at IRAD. Any records prior to 1916 that exist are with the Logan County Clerk. For death records the information is the same except that copies of the death records 1916-1945 are also at the State Archives. Logan County marriage index 1857-1900 will eventually be available through the State Archives and online, no date set. In the meantime, you have to depend on the Logan County Clerk. Today I discovered that 511 men enlisted in the Black Hawk War from Sangamon County [which includes what is now Logan County]. I noted some duplicates. For example, some guy named A. Lincoln apparently enlisted twice. He was probably never heard from again. <g> I didn't see a lot of names I recognized -- I scanned the whole list -- but I did note Copeland, several Lucases, one Musick, a 'Sroggin' which is undoubtedly a Scroggin, a Turner, that elusive John Williams...
