    1. [ILLOGAN] Finding Old List Messages
    2. Have you missed a message? Did you miss some of the postings on family names? Are you a new subscriber and want to see what has gone on here before? The URL for the threaded archives [which are fairly new, only going back a few months] for any mailing list is: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/LISTNAME-L/ Substitute the actual listname IN ALL CAPS for the word listname above. The actual list name is IL+county name+-L, ie, ILLOGAN-L, ILMARION-L, ILMENARD-L, ILTAZEWE-L. For the ISearch archives start here: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl and type in the list name in the box to go to the archives for that list. 1. [ILLOGAN] Land Records
    2. I am copying this information to the Logan list so I don't have to repeat myself. In the book "Land & Property Research in the United States" by E. Wade Hone, there are maps of land office boundaries. I won't bore you with the early years since I don't believe they apply here. Beginning Nov 6, 1823, what is now Logan was in the Springfield land office. You will need to know the name of the land office if you want to order certain information. After 1855-56 the entire state was in the Springfield land office until that merged with the GLO in 1876. The GLO became the Bureau of Land Management. I have discovered that the old township plats for Illinois are in the National Archives, have been microfilmed and should be available through FHC and state archives, also the state BLM office. It lists the state archives, state library and the Newberry Library in Chicago, along with the National Archives branch in Chicago as locations to find these. Illinois does not have a BLM office. This is a massive book, more than 500 oversized pages. Here's a paragraph that might be applicable to the Birks/Burks situation: "Remember that the date of patent is not the date of application. An ancestor may have been in a location several years earlier than originally thougt. Search both documents." I read this to mean that the BLM record is the date of the patent. He may have applied and died before the patent was actually issued [which seems to be the case]. I hope this helps. Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com

    1. [ILLOGAN] G. H. Tuttle Funeral Home Records -- Atlanta IL area
    2. I just picked up a copy of this booklet -- the preface basically says that the compilers (Decatur Gen. Soc., Mrs. Kenneth Patterson) ... 1) alphabetized all the entries by surname 2) compared the entries to other sources and added such information that seemed to match 3) caution the user that the name given MAY be the name of the person buying the coffin, not the deceased... 4) that the dates given were the dates of burial (or coffin sale?) from 1861-1890, then the date of death from 1890-1910. I am interested in testing the data -- that is, if some of the subscribers to this list had names and dates with which they were confident, and these folks happened to be in the NE corner of Logan Co. where Tuttle conducted business, I could check your names against the listings. Perhaps, too, if you wished to have me look for one or two particular surnames, I could let you know what info is contained therein for those names, and you could judge for yourself what the information means by comparing your notes to what the book says. 1. Re: [ILLOGAN] 1865 Illinois State Census questions?
    2. >From the State Archive web site: 1865 This final state census (R.S. 103.010) currently is indexed only partially. County and township residences are necessary for efficient searches. Searches of unindexed townships with populations exceeding 2,500 cannot be performed because of limitations on staff research time. Again only the names of the heads of households are given. 1. [ILLOGAN] 1865 Illinois State Census questions?
    2. Penny Husler
    3. Hello List members, I have had great success locating family members Logan County portion of the 1870 Federal Census even though I don't have access to an index. I mention that because having done it, it's worth recommending to others. I did know there approximate locations from the 1880 Census and then branched out from there. I have been unable to locate 2 surnames prior to the 1880 Census. One of the groups were supposed to have immigrated around 1852 or 1854. Can anyone list the questions that were asked or the information that might appear on the State of Illinois Census of 1865. I'm trying to decide if it would be worth my while to get this census. Thank You, Penny (Richner) Husler

    2. George Irwin
    3. I have been looking at your info, and the map sure looks like this is the correct origin for the German families that came to Laenna and Mt. Pulaski areas of Logan County in the late 1840s. I suspect there are additional families that came to Springfield, including Hanselmann and Volle. Do you happen to have the first names that go with the family name list you sent? I have been trying to figure out if Erhard and Mary Agnes are related to two other Stoll-Rentschler couples, George and Mathias. Also, I have a George and a Matthew Rentschler that may be linked in somehow.

    3. Does anyone know if naturalization records for Scott County, Illinois, would be included in the Logan County Circuit Court? All I know is that Robert E. Nelson came to USA from England in 1843 at age 14, settled in Scott County, Illinois, and later settled in Logan County, Illinois (married there in 1854), although I can't seem to find him in any of the census. During this time period, how many counties did a circuit court include? Leah

    2. Hello! There were alot of Dryden folks who married into the Duff families in Washington Co., VA before and after 1800. Have you ever tried to post a query on that county Website? One of those Dryden descendants ended up living in Clay Co., IL I remember -- but the name was Duff. Good Luck! Marlyn Duff New Berlin, WI

    1. Re: [ILLOGAN] Naturalization Records
    2. I called the IL State Archives about Naturalization records. They directed me to call Logan County Clerk. I called the Logan County Clerk and she directed me to call the Logan County Circuit Clerk (217-735-2376). I spoke to Mary and she was very helpful. I told her what I was looking for, and she told me I should send my request in writing to the attention of Brenda. Before letting me go, Mary looked in her card index for my family surname to make sure there for me to request. Now I not only know were to request naturalization records, I also know there is something there for me to request. The cost for copies if $1.00 for the first page and 50 cents for each additional page. Carol Elder So. California

    1. Re: [ILLOGAN] Scroggin and related names
    2. I want to point out that there are several errors in the Margaret Doggett Scroggin page...at least what he has does not agree with some of the records I have. I probably should have made a list but I didn't. Be alert for these -- some are fairly obvious and are probably typos. Margaret is a direct ancestor of mine. I note that the generations before her contain documentation and seem to be well done. Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com
