    1. [ILLOGAN] German Databases at Ancestry.com Free 1 week
    2. Penny Husler
    3. Hi, I subscribe to Ancestry.com and received the following information from their daily Email Ancestry Daily News, 07 October 1999. The ability to search the Wuerttemberg Index by location & name has been amazingly useful to me. As far as I'm concerned, this is the purpose for which computers were invented! Go for it! 7 volumns in a single swipe. Just like the little shoemaker. You can do searches that just aren't practical with books. Use these databases for free for 1 week only. (address at the bottom of this email) I use the unformatted search to do a simple using the surname and location or the city and year of application. to see which families may have traveled together. If you get a result from your search, Search for combinations that interest you. Destination spelling varies and may be pretty unreliable. Try searches of a few combinations to be sure you have it ALL. In other words: If you search for Stoll and 1847 (from an old census record) you'll find the german city of Maisenbach, Neuenbuerg. Search next on Neuenbuerg & 1847. This may even give you surname spellings you didn't know about. If the list, for your family is too long, try Mar 1847 then go back a month and try Feb. You'll get some birth dates but you'll also get Application dates and additional names that may match. Have some fun with it. I hope I explained this well enough. If not. a plain vanilla surname search is just fine, too. Remember to do ton's of spelling variations for german names or give it up and search by date and first name. For example: Margaret may be Margaretha. Jacob may be Jakob. Penny (Richner) Husler ============================================================ GERMAN AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> ============================================================ October 6th has been designated as "German American Day" in the United States, and from the middle of September to the middle of October we celebrate German American Heritage Month. 1. [ILLOGAN] Hickey & Scully & Maher
    2. HI Everyone, I have had some small break-throughs on my lines in Logan county, but they lead to more questions. I have been corresponding with a relative of the Scully family who is in Tipperary, Ireland. He said that they have wondered the same questions we have in our lines. One of the main questions is what was the link (if any) between the Hickey family and the Scully family. John Hickey and his wife lived in the 'big white house' with William Scully in Illinois. John Hickey and his brother William Hickey both helped bring immigrants to work the Scully lands. John & William Hickey's mother's maiden name was Mary Maher. There was a Mary Maher that was an ancestor of William Scully. We aren't sure if the two Mahers are connected or not. James Hickey (husband of Mary Maher & father of John & William Hickey) came to Illinois after the death of Mary. There was a James Hickey living on the Scully lands in Tipperary prior to the time that James would have immigrated. There are also a lot of Mohan (Mowen) marriages in the Hickey lines. Does anyone know of the 'white house' that would have been the Scully home around the early 1850s? Thank you for any ideas or information. 1. [ILLOGAN] Sangamon Marriage Apps
    2. Mary Ann isn't on this list at the moment but here's a message from her that might be useful: I noticed that there were several persons from surrounding Counties, so thought it might be a good idea for you to check these out. There were some from Morgan and Menard as well as Logan, Macoupin and Macon Counties. I have obtained permission from Eileen Gochanour to post on the Sangamon ILGenWeb page, her transcription/publication of "Sangamon County Illinois Marriage Applications - March 16, 1879 thru December 31, 1881" Didn't count how many, but there are 62 pages of Marriage applications here, giving the Application #, Groom, Bride, Age, and place of residence. These are Applications for a License and are housed at the IL Regional Archives at Brooken Library, Univ. of IL, Springfield. Some of these marriages might not have occurred, but good guess would be that at least 90% of them did. Go to this page for more information: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilsangam/marr1879.htm Special thanks to Eileen for allowing use of her publication! Hope you find one of your ancestors! 3. Hey Cheryl: Love your tidbit regarding Atlanta! NOW I know why my g.g.grandfather John Burns has the name "Foxey" as part of his cemetery inscription - here I thought he might have been a ladies man???? However, when I located his grave, there is no mention of Foxey, so don't know where they got it for the book. Looking forward to the new info. And Cicero thought they had 'em all up there. 1. [ILLOGAN] Updates
    2. I have received a message from someone using the web site who tells Elkhart is not in the town histories. Guess what! She's correct and none of us noticed. As a result I have been working on Elkhart [just a couple paragraphs] and decided to go with the Mt. Pulaski and Atlanta histories too. Lincoln will still have to wait, maybe forever. I'm not supposed to have a page that big and the town histories page is really large now without Lincoln. You will be interested to know that the worst criminals in the COUNTRY <g> hung out in Atlanta, a boast they probably didn't consider <g> wisely. The rest of Logan County was no doubt grateful they hung out up there. <g> I found some of the history, particularly of Mt. Pulaski [which I have a better handle on], to be a lot questionable. When I get the new town histories page up [in a few minutes] please have a look - a bit of a slow loader so be patient. If you are an Atlanta person please particularly check the names for spelling and let me know if there is a problem. If you are a descendant of those Baptists from Caesars Creek, Ohio, who mainly moved to south Logan County you will want to check the Atlanta section of the history -- Mann, Bowman, Hoblit, Turner are names that come to mind. 1. [ILLOGAN] ISGS Marriage Database
    2. According to the September/October ISGS Newsletter, 1,033,854 marriages have been entered into their statewide database. They have completed 42 counties, including Bond, Cass, Christian, DeWitt, Fayette, Logan, Macon, Menard and Sangamon. They are 'partially' done with 42 more including Clinton, McLean, Marion, Marshall, Mason, Peoria, Stark and Tazewell. They had not started [as of August 20] 18 counties including Marshall, Putnam, Washington and Woodford. They still need volunteers. If you are local you can abstract information from county records but there are also volunteers who enter records into a personal computer. To volunteer write: Marriage Records Project, ISGS, PO Box 10195, Springfield, IL 62791-0195. This database, when complete, will be made available through the State Archives. The plan is for it to be online like other State Archive databases. To help speed this project along volunteer. Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com

    3. Regarding the Decatur Genealogical site: I tried it and it stopped working. It really was working earlier today, honest it was . The server is still fine but it appears they may have updated their web page and changed or mispelled the name of the file. I sent a note to the decatur.org webmaster if that doesn't help by tommorrow afternoon, perhaps someone who lives in the area could call and let them know. I'd do it but I'm in California. You need to be aware that a volunteer has to prepare and send out the materials and sometimes that takes longer than we would like, probably depending on whether they have to make up a new book or have one on had.
