    1. [ILLOGAN] Coffman obit request
    2. Judy
    3. I don't even know if there is anyone on this list who is actually in Logan County but I'm stuck and I think obits would be really helpful. I've been able to trace back our COFFMAN roots as far back as John and Christena Ryse BRINING (Christonah according to the Atlanta Cemetery Index) from somewhere in Germany born approx 1803). An 1850 Logan county census indicates that John was born somewhere in PA and by his age I can guess that he was born 1796 or 1796. He died September 25 1874 (apparently only a few years to early to have the benefit of a death certificate) and his wife died February 15, 1878. Both were buried in the Atlanta Cemetery in Logan co which apparently does not have anyone on site to call. I'm hoping that an obit might mention where in PA he was born and with a little MORE luck maybe it will even narrow down his date of birth. If there IS some VERY kind person in the Logan county area who can help, I'd be sincerely grateful. Please feel free to contact me privately for any further details. 3. Dear Penny: I don't know if this will be of any help. I have noticed your name on the ILLOGAN list several times and wondered if you were related to the Richner's that I knew. I taught Fair Haven School in 1945-46; twins Marvin & Ray and their younger brother Neil Richner were among my students. They were sons of Walter & Josephine Richner who lived north of the Frank Williams farm. Today my friend and 4th cousin Jessie Ruth Myrick Stogdell owns and lives on that farm which belonged to her Uncle Frank. Her mother was Ruth Williams Myrick. 1. Re: [ILLOGAN] Loetterle & Richner update
    2. Penny Husler
    3. Hello, Thought I should update a previous post. The spellings for Richner in the 1800's are so bad that I can't locate a single record for my family in Illinios. They are there however and having computer access to a database makes all the difference. Our local microfiche for the marriages of Illinois didn't include Logan yet. So I found the following new information. Ruechner, Fredrick & Meyer, Mary in Logan Co. 25 on Aug 1861 - Is this one of his marriages? I didn't have any information on her? Anyone else know about Mary or this marriage? Fred and Christina are buried in Mt Pulaski Cemetery together. Is Mary buried there too. I'm still waiting for my Cemetery Transcriptions book. Charles Richner, Frederick's 1st son was born in Jun of 1863. I have John G. and Elizabeth (Work) Mayer and descendents. I found Frederick's marriage to Christina: Righner, Frederick & Letterle, Christina in Logan Co. on 03 Nov 1864. This is after the birth of Charles and may explain why he's listed last in the 1880 Census. See below. This also updates the assumptions made about the 1900 Census and the number of her children living and deseased. I also found both of the Richner/Stoll marriages listed as Richurs, Charles F./Stoll, Agnes Elizabeth and Richtner, Henry A./Stoll, Emma C Thanks for your assistance, Penny (Richner) Husler - ------------------------------------------------------------- Penny Husler wrote: > I can't find any record of a Frederick RICHNER in Illinois in 1860. -----------Snip---------------- > This census is the evidence that links the LOETTERLE/RICHNER families. > 1880 Census: Leanna, Logan Co., Illinois - page > > Richner, Christina 48 Keeps House,[b.Feb 1831] Wrbg-Wrbg-Wrbg, Widow > Loetterle, Frederick 28 Farmer [b.Nov 1853] Wrbg-Wrbg-Wrbg > " Adam 22 Farmer [b.Aug 1860] IL -Wrbg-Wrbg > " Michael 20 Farm hand [b.Feb 1859] IL -Wrbg-Wrbg > Richner Mattie 14 at home IL -Wrbg-Wrbg [only record of Mattie] > " Henry 12 at home IL -Wrbg-Wrbg > " William 10 at school IL -Wrbg-Wrbg > " Charles 18 Farm Hand IL -Wrbg-Wrbg > -----------Snip---------------- > This census indicates Christina had given birth to 8 children and 6 were > still living. 1. [ILLOGAN] William Williams & Retta Howe
    2. Penny Husler
    3. Hello, 1. William Harrison Williams. Born on 28 Nov 1865 in Delhi, Jersey Co., Illinois. He was listed as J. W. H. Williams in the census for Lake Fork, Logan Co., Illinois in 1900 ED 35, Page 10. He was a farmer and owned his own land. He died in IL in 1950; he was 84. According to Census information his father was from Ohio and his mother from IL. In abt 1890 he married an unknown first wife. They had the following children: 2 Villa Williams, Born in Apr 1891, IL 3 Oscar Williams, Born in Aug 1893, IL On 27 Sep 1897 when William Harrison was 31, he second married Retta A. Howe, in , Christian Co., IL. Both of her parents were born in Illinois. Born on 3 Jan 1880 in IL. She died in IL on 25 Jan 1914; she was 34.They had the following children: 4 Pearl Gertrude Williams. Born on 28 Nov 1899 in Latham, Logan Co., Illinois. She married Wilhelm Frederick Erhardt Richner. She died in Decatur, Macon Co., Illinois on 20 Mar 1931; she was 31. Buried in Mount Pulaski Cemetery. 5 Jessie Williams. Born in Jan 1898, IL Both Retta Howe and her daughter Pearl Williams died very young. I have been tracking Thomas Denson Howe and Missouri Cathrine Jennings because of other family connections but no matches, yet. As you can see I don’t have parents or siblings for either great grandparent, William Harrison Williams or his wife Retta Howe. This next family may be a possibility as W. H. Williams' parents. The birth locations and William's age are correct. 1870 Census: These parents are a guess. Living in Leanna. Parents birth locations match William’s parents. Any one else claim them? :-) Williams, William 28 Farmer OH Elizabeth 24, IL William 4, IL George 2, IL Thank you for reading, any assistance appreciated. Penny (Richner) Husler

    1. [ILLOGAN] Illinois Land Records
    2. The Illinois Public Domain Land database has been 'improved.' As a result of these 'improvements' you may be confused by the county. I always search by surname, no first name, and get the whole list in that county. I did my test search for Downing in Sangamon and got nothing. I then searched for Downing in Logan and got a list. The problem is, of the 13 land sales to Downing on the Logan list, eight are dated BEFORE there was a Logan County. So the land sale record is a Sangamon County record but now is listed in Logan. I think this will just cause confusion so I am letting everyone know. http://www.sos.state.il.us/depts/archives/data_lan.html You might want to double check those early records at the federal site: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov Cheryl Rothwell LoganCty@mindspring.com Central Illinois Regional Coordinator - ILGenWeb Project Logan County, ILGenWeb>http://www.rootsweb.com/~illogan/loindex.htm Logan County mailing list> ILLOGAN-L-request@rootsweb.com Downing mailing list> DOWNING-L-request@rootsweb.com Harding mailing list> HARDING-L-request@rootsweb.com Downing query board> http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Downing Lucas query board> http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Lucas

    1. [ILLOGAN] German Emigration Records
    2. >From Dick Eastman's online genealogy newsletter: A new Internet-based "Link To Your Roots" service of Hamburg emigration records is now appearing on the Web. I looked at the site this week and found that there isn't much information available yet. However, the site promises that much of the data will be online by the end of this year. Quoting from information found on the site: An enormous project was begun in May 1999 at the State Archive of Hamburg: in the course of four years the personal data of 5 million people, who emigrated via Hamburg from 1850 to 1934, will be digitalized and gradually made available for inquiries on the Internet. The idea hereto stems from the Publicity Department which also was able to rally all those involved. Making all this possible was a partnership between the public and private sectors. The software and hardware was made available by Debis, Oracle, Siemens, as well as Sun. 25 disabled employees will enter all data as well as answer any inquiries made via the Internet. Employees involved will be remunerated by the State Welfare Office, with financing protecting the handicapped by law, stemming from a number of corporations not having fulfilled their duties toward this law. Beginning in the winter of 1999 the first period of years starting with 1890 should partially be accessible on the Internet. The entire scope of data can be accessed for a fixed charge as well as the issuance of a certificate. In the long term these charges should be used to secure some of these working places permanently. Note that the site does not claim that original documents will be available online. Instead, it says, "the first period of years starting with 1890 should partially be accessible on the Internet" and that "...employees will enter all data as well as answer any inquiries made via the Internet." Remember that the port of Hamburg was the point of embarkation for many non-German people as well. More than four million emigrants, including about one million Jewish refugees escaping from Czarist Russia, traveled overland to Hamburg from many countries in Eastern Europe. That is why the Hamburg emigration lists are so important for many genealogists in the USA and Canada. The leading role played by the Port of Hamburg in the emigration business was primarily due to the activities of the Hamburg American Package Travel Company (HAPAG). Around 1900 HAPAG was the world's biggest shipping line and Hamburg the most important emigration port. HAPAG's strategy of employing emigration agents in Eastern Europe to praise the quality of the accommodation on the huge HAPAG ships resulted in streams of emigrants sailing from Hamburg. So it was mainly Eastern European emigrants who sailed to the States via Hamburg. Hamburg is the only emigration city in Germany that still has complete lists of all emigrants to the U.S. via Hamburg between 1850 and 1934. In other German cities such as Bremen, also an important emigration port, the ships' lists have disappeared or were destroyed in the war. In Hamburg the lists are not only complete, but they also contain details of the emigrants' places of origin -- a considerable advantage in locating ancestors from Eastern Europe. Now researchers who know or think that their ancestors emigrated via Hamburg will be able to find out for sure on the Internet. The 1890-1893 lists are already on the Net, and from now on, another year will be added every month. By 2003 all the lists with the names of around five million emigrants who left Hamburg from 1850 to 1934 will be accessible via the Internet. If you believe that any of your ancestors left Hamburg during the years mentioned, you will want to keep an eye on the Hamburg Link To Your Roots site at: http://www.hamburg.de/LinkToYourRoots/english/ Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com

    2. Cheryl did not pass that link along because it has some problems. [I try to check links before posting.] Whoever posted it to the other list got the information from a post by Mary Ann Kaylor of Sangamon. She and I have been checking some of the problems all day. It does NOT have the gazetter part of the 1837 IL Gazetteer for example. It turns out it was put up by a consortium in western Illinois and is really geared to western Illinois rather than the whole state. I don't know if misrepresents itself or it was misrepresented in the Springfield paper. Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com

    1. Re: [ILLOGAN] STATEWIDE MARRIAGE INDEX
    2. You really shouldn't have any trouble obtaining those marriage records after 1900 from the county clerk if you know the particulars. If you don't know the particulars it is different. I don't suppose they will be put online, certainly not those from 1920 on at this point due to privacy reasons. I personally have a living relative who was married in 1920 so it is possible. [She'll be 99 later this month.] The other fact is when you do old records the numbers are small but after 1900 the numbers of records can be overwhelming. Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com

    1. Re: [ILLOGAN] Scully Estates
    2. George Irwin
    3. Correction to my note of Oct. 3. It was Lord William Scully who bought the Logan County lands in the 1850s for $1.25 per acre. He was born in 1821 and became a US citizen in 1900, according to notes left by my Aunt based on a news report. At his death in 1906, he left an estate of 30,000 acres in Logan County, plus another 12,000 in Grundy County, 4,000 in Sangamon, 60,000 in Nebraska, 50,000 in Kansas, and 40,000 in Missouri. His wife died in London in 1932. Their son, Thomas Scully (1879-1961), and his wife, Isabel Burrell, had 4 children in England. They were Shiela, Sylvia, Ira, and Thomas Douglas Scully. Thomas divorced Isabel because she refused to immigrate to the US. He then married Violet Mary Simpson, who did immigrate with him in 1925. Thomas and Violet had two sons, Peter Dennys Scully and Michael John Scully. These two sons inherited the US. lands, Thomas left some 92,000 acres in Illinois), while the four children in England got $650,000 each over an 8 year period.

    2. Yep, a repeat. <g> I've put a link to the marriage records on the main page of the Logan web site so it is easy to find. I was whining <g> to a genealogist friend about the records I did NOT find. Writing out my whole litany caused a bell to go off in my head. Remember, they can only record what exists. Those records lost in the courthouse fire are permanently gone and won't be in this database or any other one. I don't know why I didn't think about that before but I am willing to bet I'm not the only one who forgot. Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com
