I believe these cards were indexed during the depression years by the WPA workers for the National Archives. The card gives the name, age, (only given as 18) occupation, nationality, destination, port, vessel, and yr. of arrival. At the bottom right corner is the number (in my case) AB2747(?). Hi I suggest a visit to the following site. http://www.nara.gov/publications/microfilm/immigrant/rg36.html#nyk Pick out the roll you used from their list. (convert it from Family History Catalog number to NARA number) Index to Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving at New York, NY, 1820--1846. M261. 103 rolls. 16mm. DP. Then go to the following web site http://www.nara.gov/regional/public/nycpubli.html#genealogy They have a Email address where you can inquire about the cost to have them make the photo copies for you. I'm always stunned by how accessible these people and facilities are. I'd just cut and paste what you typed above. Then ask how much and is a special form required. :-) The last time I wanted files on ancestors at our San Bruno NARA, I just Emailed them the day before and the files were waiting. They want 24 hour notice so someone will be there to pull the information. Some records are bound into books, some are in file folders. Some are done in amazing old script and some are done on pathetic old typewriters. We're just ever so grateful they keep them all. Hope that helps, Penny Husler

    1. Re: [ILLOGAN] Anne E. Vaught Roach
    2. the Tuttle funeral home records show no one with the name Vaught handled by that undertaker; however, there is an isolated entry for a "Dr. Voit", November 24, 1897. This, even if it is your Peter Vaught, does not answer your question. There is no indication whether "Dr. Voit" was buried locally, or sent back to SC. Other Roach's mentioned in the book include Needam, 9/25/1867, aged 68; Charles or Midland City, Dec. 19, 1880; Wm., 2/2/1887; Mrs. Alsie, 10/24/1891; and, Thos. at Atlanta, July 14, 1905, aged 61 years. The first name mentioned, Needam, has the notation "Roach" in the column that seems to show where a person is buried, as researched by the Decatur Gen. Soc. as they prepared the Tuttle records for publication. Perhaps 10% of all the entries have some sort of entry in that column. Paul in Bflo

    1. [ILLOGAN] CD Lookups
    2. Broderbund is back peddling a bit on what is 'fair use' of their CDs. They prohibit wholesale 'I have this CD and will do lookups' but they now say if you do one or two lookups for a neighbor it is acceptable. I interpret that to mean if someone on this list [of Logan County 'neighbors'] says 'if anyone has the CD on Revolutionary War Pension Lists could they tell me if Abraham Lucas is listed?' that is a fair use question. [Answer: yes, pension denied.] ONE or two items to be looked up at the most... Besides, if you have a whole list you really should buy the CD, book or whatever. If this gets out of hand we'll have to bring it to a halt so proceed accordingly. Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com

    2. My grandmother, Anne E. Vaught Roach, lived in the Atlanta, IL. area just before 1900. The family story is that her father, Peter Vaught, died while visiting her from South Carolina. Is it possible to find out if Peter Vaught is buried in Logan Co.? Thank you, Robert P. Roach

    1. [ILLOGAN] Immigration Source Code
    2. Not the answer but more information... NARA is the National Archives Regional something, in this case on the southwest side of Chicago. Problem with them is you pretty much have to be in the region you are searching. The one in Atlanta, for example, has records for the southeastern US, not including Logan County, IL. I never used the FHC microfilms for this kind of research, and I don't remember what they named the numbers on the card index films at Nara but I would guess that is the code for the location of the original record or possibly the NARA film number to check next? It has been years but I remember filling out a form at Nara with the info from the microfilmed card and taking it with $$ to the desk. They looked at the numbers from the card and told me to go away, the record I needed was downtown and they don't order them. :o) About a month later I made it downtown and WOW! The guy looked at the form, pulled out a large book and let me look (but don't touch) at some pages in it before he copied them for me. For my Grandpa I have a "Certificate of Arrival" that shows he arrived in New York on July 10, 1910 on the ship New York (which he had boarded in Southhamptom, England. His "Declaration of Intention" was filed in Cook County April 1912 and it contains his description, the exact location (down to the farm) of his birth in Sweden, says his last residence was Coppenhagen, Denmark and that he forever renounces his allegiance to King Gustavus V. Next page is his "Petition for Naturalization" filed 8 years later and by then he was living at 46th and Lake Park Ave. in Chicago, was married to my Grandma, was working as a Chauffeur and that he lived in Illinois since Sept 1, 1912 except for Aug. 1916-Oct. 1917 when he lived in Philadelphia, PA. This page also shows the names, addresses and occupations of the two folks who vouched for him. Last page shows that he took his "Oath of Allegiance" on Feb. 20, 1919. Neat stuff and a real windfall! Those lil cards do not even hint at the amount of info that is really out there somewhere. Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com

    3. Charlotte -- I have no additional information on the mother of Maria B. Roos, wife of Jacob Stoll. Given the complexity of relationships, and the lack of family linkages, my Aunt Ferne Irwin could easily have a mixup somewhere in what she drew from obituaries. But I will look forward to receiving your linkage to them.

    3. Source Code- Microfilm ordered from FHC, Searching the Port of N.Y. 1820-1846 (Indexed Years), FHC catalog number 0350267. The card gives the name, age, (only given as 18) occupation, nationality, destination, port, vessel, and yr. of arrival. At the bottom right corner is the number (in my case) AB2747(?). What more do I want? Before I ever believed I would get to this point someone (?) said this source may give exact birth information, and relatives, which I need, to make sure this is my guy. Cheryl, there is no legend or list of source codes at the beginning. I will take your suggestion about the book, thank you. I have asked the FHC, 2 area libraries, a ships list site, (where this message really belongs), and have not gotten an answer. If I get private e-mail or mail from another site I will share with everyone. Thank you Earliene for the cemetery site, DeWitt will be another quest for another line for me. Thank you, Cheryl for all your work. A very generous man at the Logan County Gene. and Hist. Society, and the Logan County Clerk and Records office have been unbelievably helpful. Of course there are still gaps in Logan County I'm trying to fill in. Carolyn

    1. [ILLOGAN] Canadian Census Closed to Public
    2. "Dear Fellow Genealogists in the United States: Millions of Americans from all over the United States find their search for roots leads back into Canada and thus they turn to surviving Canadian vital and census records in order to extend or complete their family trees. The loss of public access to all post-1901 Canadian census records is therefore a blow to genealogists on both sides of the American-Canadian border. Withdrawal of public access stems from a clause inserted in a 1905 law which in the view of the Canadian government guarantees perpetual confidentiality of census records. Unless this law is changed there will never be another Canadian census made available to genealogists. Canadian genealogists are fighting this recent government decision and are inviting American genealogists with Canadian roots to have their say as well. Canadian Senator Lorna Milne feels strongly that all those affected by this decision whether citizens of this country or not have a right to be heard. She is asking Americans and all other non-Canadians to write her if they are concerned about the loss of these irreplaceable old records and she will be their voice in Canada's Parliament. She intends to read some of the letters in the Senate Chamber when this issue is debated later this year. Letters may be sent to her by email (please include postal address) or via regular mail at: Senator Lorna Milne, The Senate of Canada, Ottawa, Ontario, K1A 0A4 Canada Email: Farquhar@netcom.ca Americans can also contribute by signing a special "Petition of Support" which will be presented to Parliament by Senator Milne. Copies of this petition are available on the web where they can be downloaded and printed out: <http://www.globalgenealogy.com/census/petition.htm> " Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com

Which cemetery? >Downing in Mt. Pulaski Township? > William Downing and Robert Johnston Downing Cemetery is in Chester Township. There is a Robert J. Johnston, killed Oct 12, 1864. 2. Here's a good address for information on viruses. There is a new version of Melissa out there but the information has gotten out of hand -- as usual. I advise checking for yourself at the following address. [Save the address in your bookmarks and any time you hear of a virus you can check it yourself]. http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/index.html If you install a virus checker and regularly update it you shouldn't have to worry too much. Since they all seem to attack Microsoft products like Word and Outlook use WordPerfect and Eudora. <g> Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com

    2. I don't suppose Marge meant to send her change of address to the list but it gives me a chance to point out that if you change your address and you have a query on the boards you need to let me know so I can change your address in them. The alternative would be to post a new one and ask me to delete the old one. Personally I think you are better off posting a new one -- you probably have better information now and I think folks are reluctant to mail to old queries -- and having the old one deleted but it is up to you.
