    2. Paul, Thank you for the additional info regarding the "G. H. Tuttle Funeral Home Records" book. When we looked at it, we thought it was just an index, and ( wishful thinking) there were more complete records elsewhere. Thank you for setting us straight. Jane in IL

    1. Re: [ILLOGAN] Logan County Cemeteries
    2. I can help with a couple, I think, unless there are more than one Zion or Turley cemetery in Logan County. I have been to Zion, which is just north of BR55 in Lincoln (the cross street is Nicholson Ave.). I want to say it is on route 2 a couple miles north of Lincoln. I have also been to Turley, which is just north of Lake Fork off route 9, I believe. It is not too far from Carlyle Cemetery. I really didn't pay too much attention to the route numbers because I had directions given to me differently (e.g. for Turley, turn right out of Carlyle Cemetery and take the first left and follow the road as it winds around for a couple of miles. For Zion, it was go north on BR55 to Nicholson Road, turn left and go a couple of miles and the cemetery will be on the left after you go back over Interstate 55). Bill Scroggin

    1. Re: [ILLOGAN] Burials - Botkin/Bodkin
    2. It may be of some interest to someone that I have totaled the deaths by year for about 60% of the G. H. Tuttle book, mostly out of curiosity to see if there is evidence of epidemic deaths. I will freely admit that I know nothing of whether Mr. Church had competition for his services at any point from 1862-1910, whether he was incapacitated for any reason during that time and kept records less well some years than others, or whether the base population he was able to serve changed markedly over time. Any of those factors could make these figures meaningless. My guess is that a small commercial center such as Atlanta only had one undertaker during that period, that most folks were farmers and that farmers hadn't enjoyed the industrial revolution to any extent from the beginning to the end of the term of years in question, thus continued to have as many children as they could raise to enjoy the fruit of their labor until they married and moved away. If anyone has access to the population of the township in which Atlanta was located for the census years 1860-1910, I would be able to plug in the population factor to these totals after a fashion. Nonetheless, there are significant differences in mortality from one year to the next, indicating surges of disease caused fatalities. The largest year for deaths by far is 1865. I would speculate this is a combination of the wearing down of families during the absence of the father of the family off in the service with the effect of soldiers returning from the war bringing viruses with them to which the home front had not been previously exposed. # per year 9 37 1862 52 1863 45 1864 82 1865 52 1866 51 1867 42 1868 41 18698 64 1870 531871 63 1872 67 1873 43 1874 61 1875 47 1876 35 1877 281878 271879 411880 43 1881 35 1882 26 1883 32 1884 27 1885 36 1886 32 1887 36 1888 29 1889 41 1890 35 1891 34 1892 31 1893 34 1894 41 1895 44 1896 25 1897 21 1898 28 1899 24 1900 21 1901 18 1902 21 1903 39 1904 20 1905 31 1906 31 1907 35 1908 29 1909 38 1910

Tuttle Funeral Home Records, Atlanta, Logan County, Illinois", compiled by Mrs. Kenneth Patterson of the Decatur Gen. Soc. The preface says that G. H. Tuttle, who had been Mr. A. E. Church's assistant and successor in the business, alphabetized the records for the sale of caskets while he was still an assistant, and allowed the Decatur Gen. Soc. to copy the records. In case you need the information, the date of sale of the caskets for the Bodkin family members, perhaps the date of burial or death, hard to say in some cases, is as follows: Bodkin, Richard February 8, 1862 David's child September ___ 1865 Old Mr. August 16, 1866 Mrs. December 24, 1873 David October 25, 1885 _____ December 24, 1890 in some cases in the listings, the Gen. Soc. has been able to correlate the listings to burials in various cemeteries -- in the case of the Bodkin's, no additional information is given. Hope this is of some help in understanding the book. 1. [ILLOGAN] Burials - Botkin/Bodkin
    2. Hi to all, I am new to your lists and am researching the Botkin/Bodkin lines. They lived and died in both Logan and DeWitt Counties. I live nearby in Decatur, IL and just located a book at the Genealogical Library in Decatur that is an index for "G. H. Tuttle Funeral Home Records "from Atlanta, Logan Co, IL.. Can anyone tell me where to locate the actual funeral home records. Are they still at a funeral home in Atlanta, or historical society or county seat? Our Botkins purchased land and settled in the early 1840's. George and Sarah were in Logan Co. along with several of their grown sons. William Needham Botkin and family were in DeWitt Co. I will gladly exchange info with other interested parties. Thank you in advance. Jane Sample Myers

    1. [ILLOGAN] Logan County Cemeteries
    2. My eyes are crossed. I obtained a recent plat map of Logan County and have attempted to locate all the cemeteries. I will put the additional details on the cemetery page. I confess the Quarter Section and Quarter Quarter designations were determined by eyeballing and some were definitely on the line so they could be slightly off. The cemeteries I can't locate or have other problems with are listed below. [Those known to within city limits are not listed.] If you know where these cemeteries are or any other information please let me know. If you have the listing perhaps you could check to see if there is further information there. Baker/Ruwe in section 23, Chester Township [VERY small]. Bell in section 1, Mt. Pulaski Township 17N. Foster, Goldsmith, Union Station, Wright in Broadwell [Union may be in the town. There is a cemetery in section 28 but I don't know which one it is.] Donnan in Aetna Township. Hendrickson in section 22, Aetna Township. Lawrence/Bell in section 14, Elkhart Township. Turley in section 11, Elkhart Township. Pool Hill in section 23, Sheridan Township. Springbank in section 23, Corwin Township. Rimerman/Schrader in Section 29, West Lincoln Township. Zion in section 18, East Lincoln Township. Berryhill in section 29, Oran Township. Blue Grass and Jolly in Oran Township. I note they are extremely close together. I found one cemetery in section 4. Thomas in section 18, Prairie Creek Township. I have an 'extra' cemetery in section 32, Prairie Creek Township. Howser in section 22, Eminence Township. Hasenmyer, Miller, Morgan, Orendorff/Medcalf, Thompson in Eminence Township. There is a cemetery in section 21. Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com

    1. [ILLOGAN] Davis
    2. >From Mary Ann Kaylor, Sangamon County: I read with interest today, an article in the State Journal Register, Springfield, IL, where a new Tombstone was dedicated by the DAR for Revolutionary War Vet AQUILLA DAVIS in Wolf Creek Cemetery, Sangamon County. Aquilla Davis resided in the Fancy Creek area, as well as in an area which later became Logan County. He was born 1756 in the Chesapeake Bay Area of Maryland and died 15 Aug 1831. DAR records indicate that he enlisted at age 25, in March 1781, serving as a Pvt with the VA Continental Line under Lt. Robert Craddock in Col. Posey's 4th VA Regiment. He married Isabella BRIGGS in VA in 1784 and emigrated to KY. They had six sons and two daughters. His profession was a school teacher and postmaster in Morganfield, KY. The family came to IL in 1820 settling near Elkhart, which then was in Sangamon County. Hope this info helps someone! Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com

    1. [ILLOGAN] Schwerdtfiger and Yeakle in Logan county
    2. Schwerdtfiger? Does anyone recognize this name? It could have variations such as Schwerdtfeger. This is the name of Waletta's Yeakle's step-father. Her mother's name is Caroline. L C Schwerdtfiger and Caroline are shown with Waletta living at 602 Lincoln Ave., Lincoln, Logan Co., IL. Caroline was born in 1869 in Illinois. Waletta was born December 1892 in Illinois. I still don't know what Caroline's last name is because I can't decipher the writing on the marriage certificate. It looks like it could be Tillin, Tellin, Wilkin, Welkin, Tallin, etc.. The only letters for sure are two LLs followed by an i. with at least one letter before and after the LLs and the i. Course the spelling could be inaccurate. If anyone can help me or knows about these families, I would appreciate any assistance or information. 1. [ILLOGAN] Lookups
    2. Great offer! It was sent to Earliene in DeWitt but Ms Brock allowed us to post it here too. You'll have to EMAIL HER DIRECTLY to ask for a lookup. Remember, be nice. Only ask for a couple lookups per message and give her time to respond. She has courageously offered on at least three lists so is probably swamped. I have several books printed by the Decatur Genealogical Society for Macon Co. IL and for Logan Co. IL. They are adjacent counties to DeWitt Co. IL. These are the books I have and if any one would like for me to look up information, I would be glad to do so. I also have 1850 U.S. Census for DeWitt Co. IL., DeWitt Co. IL Cemetery Inscriptions Vol. 1 and Vol. 3 Part 1. Macon Co. Death Index of Macon County, IL 1877-1922, Birth Index of Macon Co. I go back to IL once or twice a year. If time permits I would be happy to take pictures of tombstones. My Mother lives in Lexington, IL and her family is buried in DeWitt, IL. We visited the cemetery there last March. You are doing a great job. Sincerely, Carol Brock, Canadian, TX. rcb@yft.net. Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com
