    3. Hi All, I've come across a reference to the book "History of Logan County IL It's Past and Present". It seems there is some mention of my ancestors Isaac and Levi Coffman on page 492. If anyone happens to have a copy of this book, I'd be interested in knowing if this reference would be worth the effort to attempt to find here in WA. Thanks, Judy

    1. Re: [ILLOGAN] Early Lake Fork Settlement
    2. I think they are referring to an aread on Lake Fork in south Elkhart Township. Lake Fork is a tiny community on Route 54 southwest of Mt. Pulaski. Lake Fork Township is a tiny Township [about 3 miles by 6 miles] south of Laenna Township. Just to further confuse you, there is Lake Fork which is a tributary of Salt Creek. Sometimes it is called 'the Lake' and sometimes 'the Ditch' and sometimes Lake Fork as it meanders through FOUR Townships before connecting up with Salt Creek in Broadwell Township. The first known settlers to Logan [then Sangamon] County came in 1819 when James Latham moved north to high ground following spring floods and, along with son Richard and Ebenezer Briggs, made the first settlement by a spring at Elkhart. In 1820 Latham's son in law James Chapman and his wife Betsey built a cabin at Lake Fork on Salt Creek. Two years later the Chapman's moved along Salt Creek to Rocky Ford. Other earliest settlers include James Turley, John Stephenson, Aquilla Davis, Robert Musick and John Porter. In the 'Estate Record Index, Probate Estates 1-6684, 1821-1907' for Sangamon County [which is where estates before 1839 would have been filed] there is no listing for a record for Charles Harper. Such records, if they existed, would be held at IRAD in Springfield. If he died after 1839 and had a will it would have been filed in Lincoln. The Probate files for Logan at IRAD in Normal go back to the early 1850's. Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com

    1. [ILLOGAN] Early Lake Fork Settlement
    2. Valorie Anlage
    3. In the 1878 History of Logan County they mention an early settlement known as "Lake Fork". This isn't the same as the town of Lake Fork, is it? What towns are in that area now? I know I should be able to figure this out by looking at the maps, but as my husband says, I'm "geographically challenged"... My next question has to do with my ancestor, Charles HARPER, who lived in the Lake Fork settlement from about 1828 until the time of his death. I suspect he died before Logan County was formed. How would I go about finding his will, assuming he had one? __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Bid and sell for free at http://auctions.yahoo.com

    1. [ILLOGAN] Logan Cemeteries
    2. My final version of the listing is up. It has been compared with the cemetery listings books, the state created map and the plat books. All cemeteries seem to be accounted for. I took the plat book location over other information where it existed. The plat book agreed with the state created map in terms of locations -- just that some are not in the plat book. I would say they are small and probably on private property but I don't know for sure. Have a look when you get a chance. If you see anything I should know about let me know. I don't even want to look at it any time soon. <g> Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com

    2. My brain is not working. I don't know why I didn't compare the plat map to the cemetery location map the state created for me [a copy of which is on the web site] -- they used the latitude/longitude information they have. It would be a thing to do...if were thinking straight. Ahhh! Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com

    1. Re: [ILLOGAN] Logan County Cemeteries
    2. Thanks Bill. When you say Lake Fork I assume you mean the wide spot on 54 in Mt. Pulaski Township...which is different from Lake Fork Township. Based on that I'm looking at the map and I don't see a route 9. Looking and reading your description of a winding road I found a cemetery on Allspach property in section 25 of Elkhart Township. I also found one in section 19 of Mt. Pulaski Township. Based on your description I'd say those are Carlyle and Turley. It is certainly the right area for Turley -- means some of the other information I have is wrong though...all the more reason to actually locate these cemeteries on the plat map. Thanks. I still don't see Zion but that's a pretty congested area, lots of small tracts to show. I'll keep looking. Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com
