Unfortunately we live in a time and place where some people consider it clever to create viruses and worms which can damage data or just create a nuisance. The Rootsweb server intercepts all email with an attachment and bounces it so no attachments EVER make it to the lists. However, some folks have expressed a reluctance to participate in the next ten days and that is perfectly understandable. If everyone stops posting until after the holidays you won't miss anything. If something is posted you can always read it in the archives. Wise folks have an antivirus program such as Norton or McAfee installed and turned out. You should be going to your manufacturer's site and downloading updates to your virus definitions regularly. I used to do it once a week. Now I do it once a day. I run the program every day at 1 a.m. automagically while I sleep. It runs automagically every time I boot also. I have enabled a feature which scans all email before it is placed in my inbox. You might not need to do this -- I get several hundred emails a day due to various commitments -- but it can't hurt either. Many folks are concerned about email in general so I am sharing what information we have. There are two common methods at the moment. One method is attaching a file. The sender probably does NOT know the file is attached so knowing the sender does not mean it is safe. Until this nonsense calms down, hopefully after the first of the year, do not open ANY attachments. Technically they probably need to be an executable file but to be safe don't open any. Advise your friends you won't open them and tell them to save safe goodies for mid January. Here is a list of the known names which the worm virus can use when it sends the attachment: >g-zilla.exe, >cooler3.exe, >cooler1.exe, >copier.exe, >video.exe, >pirate.exe, >goal1.exe, >hog.exe, >party.exe, >saddam.exe, >monica.exe, >boss.exe, >farter.exe, >cheeseburst.exe, >panther.exe, >theobbq.exe, >goal.exe, >baby.exe, >bboy.exe, >cupid2.exe, >fborfw.exe, >casper.exe, >irnglant.exe, >gadget.exe Another method is to send a link -- the unsuspecting recipient clicks on the link and it installs the virus. Simple solution: don't click on any links you receive in email for now. If you think it is a valid link write it down and type it in your browser later. Just don't click on it. A good site for virus [and hoax] information is [do NOT click on this link!]: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/index.html I know McAfee has one too but the address I had is not correct. >From the Emden town history in the 1878 Logan County history: The Methodists have completed a comfortable parsonage and are taking steps to erect a church edifice. The congregation is mostly German and was organized about a year ago. That is the only church mentioned. The full history can be found at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~illogan/town.htm You will note that the town histories list the churches which would seem to indicate that the Methodists were the only ones with a church and that it was not there until 1877. If someone were married in 1870 in Emden, Logan County, Illinois, would there be church records, such as a German/Dutch Reformed Church? Thanks for suggestions. Shirley
Thanks Cheryl. I look forward to hearing from the Lolling descendant. > There is a Lolling researcher on the list. He gets the >digest so give him some time to respond. >
All of these things have a link from the main page of the Logan County web site if no link is provided. http://www.rootsweb.com/~illogan/loindex.htm Look under 'cemeteries.' Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com
There probably isn't an official death record. I believe that was before the court house fire. The marriage record falls into the same category BUT you may be in luck. There is a Lolling researcher on the list. He gets the digest so give him some time to respond. Here's the location of the state marriage records index but it does not include records destroyed by fire: http://www.sos.state.il.us/depts/archives/marriage.html There is a link to that on the main Logan County web page at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~illogan/loindex.htm Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com
Is there a simple way to find a death record in this county? looking for the record of FOUKEL KRIENS STIKKER VAN BOHNING Now the entire name may not be on the record, but married name was van Böhning. Time Frame 1866-1870 Also the marriage record of Jan/John Siebens van Böhning to Hebrieg Lolling in 1870 Emden, Logan County, Illinois Any help would be appreciated. Or suggestions are welcome. Thanks.
Can you tell me where I can find these listings? Thanks Shirley

I have recently subscribed to the Logan County list and would like to post my interests in the hopes of finding somebody else researching my Logan County kin. William HACKNEY, his wife Salley/Sarah, and several children came to Logan County from Virginia. William was a farmer and the first teacher at "Brush College". They are believed to have lived near Mt. Pulaski. He died in Logan County, death date and burial location unknown to me. Does anybody know anything about William or Sally? Their oldest son, Jacob Tivis, is my gr-gr-great grandfather. Thank you in advance for any assistance. I am always happy to share what info I have. For more on the Hackneys of Logan County, see my website: www.familytreemaker.com/users/t/h/o/Franklin-B-Thompson/
I have divided the alphabetical listing for Lake Bank Cemetery into two parts. I also divided the section C listings into two parts. They are still a bit slow to load but much faster than before. I hope this is helpful. I know some people did have trouble with getting the files to load on their computers. There are many links involved in the Lake Bank Cemetery listings. I think I have them all straight but if you find one that is wrong or broken please let me know. Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com

Messages about viruses, warnings, etc., are not acceptable for these mailing lists. However, this one is about an alleged virus on these lists so you need to be aware of what is going on. Hi, folks - We've had a lot of reports tonight about a virus being passed around on RootsWeb lists. I have looked into these reports and it does NOT appear that the viruses have actually been sent through our lists. I've included a semi-technical explanation of what I have been able to find out, for those of you who are curious. The only important message here is that RootsWeb's lists are NOT the source of recent virus reports. What seems to be happening is that the current flock of viruses do the following things when they infect a new computer: * The virus sends a copy of itself to everyone in the computer's address book; * It forges its own return address to look like it was sent by someone *else* in the address book; * and it uses the Subject line from a message that was recently sent from that machine. So if an infected person sent mail to BUMBLEROTTER-L@rootsweb.com, the virus might send out mail like this to someone else in the victim's address book: From: BUMBLEROTTER-L@rootsweb.com To: joe@example.com Subject: [BUMBLEROTTER] looking for Fred and Wilma Bumblerotter <http://stuart.messagemates.com/index.html>http://stuart.messagemates.com/in dex.html Hypercool Happy New Year 2000 funny programs and animations... We attached our recent animation from this site in our mail ! Check it out ! Even though the mail never was sent to RootsWeb, the return address is forged to make it appear as if it came from us. I will continue to work on figuring out if there is anything that we can do about this; in the meantime, please assure any concerned subscribers that subscribing to a RootsWeb list is not dangerous. :-) -- Regards, Tim Pierce RootsWeb.com lead system admonsterator and Chief Hacking Officer
