    2. Cheryl Rothwell
    3. Ancestry owns Rootsweb, all of it. It has been maintaining Rootsweb separately and free but it also promised the family trees we uploaded would be free. I don't know if the World Connect trees are covered...this time...or not. I'm getting those Social Security Death Index searches I've been putting off done now too. Who knows how long that will be free. 1. New Online Genealogy Records
    2. Cheryl Rothwell
    3. This is provided for your information only. It is NOT an endorsement. I don't use Family Tree Legends and have no connection to them. I gather the charter price will only be available in May. The following article is from Eastman’s Online Genealogy Newsletter and is copyright 2004 by Richard W. Eastman. It is re-published here with the permission of the author. Information about the newsletter is available at http://www.eogn.com <http://www.eogn.com/>. This is late-breaking news. I do not yet have all the details but do want to include a quick mention in this week’s newsletter. Just as I was about to send this newsletter (at 4:00 AM from a London hotel room), I was informed that Pearl Street Software a few minutes ago announced a new commercial online genealogy service. You may know Pearl Street Software that produces the Family Tree Legends genealogy program that I have reviewed in the past. I consider it to be an excellent program; easy to use and yet it has a long list of features that serious genealogists demand. Now Pearl Street Software has announced the Family Tree Legends Records Collection. It's a collection of more than 400 million records that will become available in June 2004. Please note that the new service does not require the Family Tree Legends software for use. According to Cliff Shaw, President and CEO of Pearl Street Software, "The competition is really what got us into this market. Subscription prices have continued to rise for several years now. Personally, I don't feel like the existing services have improved enough to justify their increase in cost. So many of our customers have expressed frustration about the rising cost of genealogy data on the Internet. Some even say that they just can't afford to do genealogy any more, especially some of our users on fixed incomes. In my mind, the genealogy subscription market has become inflated because there's no competition to the existing services. We plan to restore some healthy competition to the subscription market and FAST!" The collection reportedly will contain birth, marriage, and death indexes from most states, military records, land records, court and probate records, biographies, cemetery transcriptions, and hundreds of books. Cliff Shaw reports, "We're going to be investing in our service heavily and adding new databases frequently. 400 million is only a starting point. We'll be adding new collections and features to enhance the value of our service. Our main goal is to make our service as user friendly and powerful as possible, while remaining very affordable." For a limited time, Pearl Street Software is offering a special pre-order price of $19.95 per year to become a charter member. The regular price will be $29.95. Bill Detmers Bill: Did anyone tell the story of the fence at Laughery school? It basically had concrete posts and pipe hand and centerails all around the property. We kids could speak into the pipe at the front of the school, and be heard at the rear of the property where the fence terminated near the outdoor toilets. We carried lunch boxes during the Summer, but had hot lunches in the basement in the Winter. We used the wax paper from our lunch boxes to sit on, to make the slide faster. We also had to hold up either one or two fingers when we wanted to go to the outside privy. Two fingers generally always got you permission to go! JOHN WILHAM

    3. You could run by and take a picture of the building now. As you well know, it still exists and has been a residence for a long time. The Dittuses lived there for years. I don't know who lives there now. I suggest checking with the Mt. Pulaski Township Historical Society. I believe they have collected information that was in private hands on the local schools. The Logan County Genealogical & Historical Soceity also has information on the old schools. 2. Dear Cheryl & other readers: I would like to know whether any old photos exist of Laufrey/Laughfry school and it's students, just 1 mile north of Mt. Pulaski on rt. 121 on the East side of the road (the old brick school still exists as a residence). I attended first grade there in 1946, and of course, had Mr. Lukenbill as county superintendant of schools. Some of the classmates I remember were Hugh Bowman and Dolly Bowman who were in the first grade with me. I think that Larry Wilham (George's boy) was the only 2nd grader. Others that I remember were Harry Damerin, Bill & "Donk" McCain, and I had met their little brother, Jimmy McCain (Father, Lee McCain). I think there were also kids named Meister in the school. The teacher's name was Delka Dean. John Wilham

    3. The records of the state school, known by various names and most recently Lincoln Developmental Center, regarding individuals are generally not available without a court order. STATE ARCHIVES RECORD GROUP 254.000 - LINCOLN DEVELOPMENTAL CENTER In 1865 the General Assembly instructed the directors of the Illinois Institution for the Education of the Deaf and Dumb to establish an Experimental School for the Instruction and Training of Idiots and Feeble-Minded Children in the State of Illinois (L. 1865, p. 78). The school was temporarily located in Jacksonville and after a five-year trial period the General Assembly incorporated it as the Illinois Institution for the Education of Feeble-Minded Children (L. 1871, p. 417). As one of the state's permanent charitable institutions, it was to provide care, support, training, and education for mentally deficient children. A three-member board of trustees, appointed by the Governor, exercised general supervision and selected a superintendent to operate the institution. They also were subject to the investigative authority of the Board of State Commissioners of Public Charities. Appropriations for the acquisition of land and the construction of buildings were made in 1875 but the institution's permanent quarters in Lincoln were not occupied until 1878. In 1877 the institution's name became the Illinois Asylum for Feeble-Minded Children (L. 1877, p. 13). The institution had its own hospital and shops in which inmates manufactured brushes, mattresses, and shoes. Inmates also worked on a nearby farm owned and operated by the institution. In 1909 the Board of State Commissioners of Public Charities and the boards of trustees of all state charitable institutions were abolished and executive and administrative control was transferred to the newly created Board of Administration (L. 1909, p. 102). Under the new board the institution became Lincoln State School and Colony. With the passage of the Civil Administrative Code in 1917 the Department of Public Welfare assumed all responsibility for the school and retained control until the creation of the Department of Mental Health in 1961 (L. 1961, p. 2666). The school's name which had been shortened to Lincoln State School in 1953 was again altered to Lincoln Developmental Center in 1975 (P.A. 79-581, p. 1895). Access to some of these records is restricted according to the provisions of the Mental Health Code and the State Records Act of 1957 as amended. Lacon is in Marshall County. Wyoming is in Stark County. 1. Linscott
    2. Hello. I am Carrol Mick. I am new to this forum. I am researching the surnames LINSCOTT, PAUL, RADER, ROEDER, THOMAS. I am particularly interested in the surname of Linscott in this region as I am looking for information on Phoebe Mabelle Linscott this is her married name and her children Mary, Amelia, William, Elmer and maybe a George. George could be the same person as Elmer. She passed away in 15 March 1930 in Lacon, IL. Not sure where she was born. It states in the 1910 census that she was born in Illinois and was 38 in 1910. Also looking for Benjamin Linscott could be Phoebe’s spouse. William Linscott was an inmate in 1920 and 1930 of the Illinois Institute for Idiots and Feeble Minded Children. I show him as 22 in 1930 and 13 in 1920. I think this is Phoebe’s son. I think Mary married George Chamblin in Wyoming, IL. I think Elmer was also called Bennie or Benjamin and was taken custody of the Illinois Children’s Home and Aide Society in 1910-1911 and then adopted out. Any information would be great. Thank you, Carrol Mick [email protected] or [email protected]

According to the best estimate of a long time researcher into the history of that group, the Lake Fork Predestinarian Baptist church was NOT in Lake Fork Township but in south Mt. Pulaski Township, closer to the location of the town of Lake Fork. I just learned that recently. Many of my ancestors came with that church. 3. Just for the record there is a listing of all the Logan County research materials at the LDS library done by the late Penny Husler. The link is on the main page of the Logan County web site -- Logan County Printed Resources. If you are doing serious research I suggest printing it out for future reference. Early deeds HELD AT THE COURTHOUSE were destroyed. Many people had their copies which have survived. Also, I am advised that after the fire [April 15, 1857] county officials asked people to bring in their deeds and such and copies were made for the files. Deeds also show up in abstracts. Property information may be found in wills. For property purchased from the federal government that was done out of the Springfield office from 1823 on. From 1816 until 1823 it was done out of the Edwardsville office. I don't know how much land was actually purchased in Logan County before 1823. There were settlers but those I am aware of it didn't actually own the land until later. The federal land purchase database is again off line by court order but the Illinois version thereof is still online at the State Archives web site. Be advised the state version differs from the federal version and should be verified. 2. Part of my tree came from OH in the 1830s. Oral history from my grandmother: Mrs. Catherine Hullinger was born in Green Co., OH on Feb 22, 1813. Her maiden name was Catherine Wyckles. she was married in 1831 to Mr. Chance who died a few years later. Her second husband was Hiram Hullinger. They moved from OH to buffalo Hart Grove in 1866, then to far, two miles west of Niantic, where she lived the remainder of her life. Mr. Hullinger died in 1872. She was the mother of ten children, seven of whom survived her. I don't have the source for this information but hope it helps you. A church in Greene County, OH, moved pretty much en masse to central Illinois, in what was then Sangamon County but is now Logan, Menard, DeWitt and Sangamon. They founded several churches, primarily [for that group] the one in Lake Fork Township of Logan County. I have seen the actual records of that church which, amazingly, survive. Darlene

    1. County Histories on Film
    2. For those of you who are near LDS family history centers, you will be interested to know that the FHL in Salt Lake City has microfilmed (or at least has microfilms) of two county histories of Logan Co. While county histories are not to be relied on very heavily, when records have been destroyed, as in Logan Co., county histories may be one of the few sources of family information for researchers. I was told, perhaps mistakenly, that many of the early deeds of Logan Co. had been destroyed. I needed to know more about a man named Christopher Ewing, who with his wife Margaret nee Williams, showed up in a deed in Henderson Co., KY. Others involved in this deed were other residents of Logan Co., IL: Joseph Orendorff and his wife Elizabeth, and a Mr. McGraw and his wife Mary. They were all heirs, with differing shares, of one David Stephens, deceased of Henderson Co. KY. A county history of Logan Co. told me a lot about Christopher Ewing, an early settler of Logan Co. He had had three wives (he seemed to like to talk a lot), the first of whom was a Margaret Williams, who was born in Kentucky!!!! Bingo--this information seems to fit the family history I have of my great-grandfather's family--who were on the move in Kentucky and who did not leave much of a paper trail!!! Christopher Ewing was mentioned in at least two surviving letters to my great-grandfather--our only grasp of his own family history. One letter mentioned Henderson and gave some names of some residents in that Kentucky county. Anyway--back to the Logan county histories: One is by Stringer, and one is by Donnelley [spelling may be wrong] Suggestion: Get online with www.familysearch.org Click on the link to the Library--for some reason, I prefer the link on the lower right Find the PLACE search Type in logan and then illinois leave out the suffix county Go down the list of topics until you get to History Click on this Then click on the link for each history--if there is a notation that there are films click on film notes You can order one (at a time, please--as they are BIG/LONG) of the histories to your nearby FHC--the film, that is--not the actual book. No lending library at the FHL in SLC. It has been so long since I have read (not entirely) either of these histories and I cannot remember whether they are indexed. Look around at the description to determine whether there is an index. Incidentally, some years ago I was visiting a relative in Austin, TX and since both worked, I drove down to the Texas State Library. There (I believe it was there) I found a hard copy (a book) of the Donnelly history at the Library. Try the online catalog of any university near you and also the catalog of your own State library. One never knows what is lurking on those shelves. Genealogists have to be persistent and they have to be detectives. The internet is helpful, but it seldom is going to give you all you WANT to know. Happy hunting! I hope this information helps someone. By the way, some persons may be listed in Sangamon Co. IL county histories. So look for those, also. I found a wonderful biography in a Sangamon county history of Alfred Orendorff, whose parents had lived in Logan Co.. His bio gave me lots of information on his mother, the former Elizabeth Stephens of Kentucky!!! He became a well-known attorney and, I believe, the first President of the Illinois Historical Society. And he was a first cousin to my great-grandfather, who had been born in Kentucky but migrated to Mississippi and then to Texas. E.W.Wallace

    2. Sorry, I did forget to mention my gggrandmother's name. All our family knows about her is what has been written in the Lincoln, Logan County, Illinois 1850 and 1860 censuses. Her name in the 1850 census was Sarah Robinson, age 43, born in Ohio, noted as HOH with two 'Robinson' children. In the 1860 census her name was Sarah Green, age 53 and living next to her son-in-law, Joseph Craven, along with her son, Samuel Green (who later, before going into the Civil War in 1862, changed his name back to Samuel Robinson). We have located Sarah's tombstone (taken a photo) in a cemetery in Kansas where she died while living with her son, Samuel M. Robinson. Her tombstone states her name as: Sarah T. Green. I am hoping research in Ohio may lead me to Sarah T. Robinson since we have had no luck locating any clues in Illinois as to how she came to Illinois. I guess because of her age, it is possible she adopted her son, Samuel, and her daughter, Angeline. Again, thanks for any help. JaneAnn Gifford Ft.
