    1. Re: [ILLOGAN] Scroggin, Phillips, Moore
    2. Hi John, I remember our many emails and all the help you gave me. While I am still trying to find more on Sarah J. (Phillips) Scroggin's ancestors. This query is to try and find information on her descendants and where they went when they left Logan County, if indeed they did leave. I do have a fax number I can email you privately. I haven't seen the book you speak of. I will contact Mt. Pulaski. Thanks for your help once again. Below I have pasted some information for you that I obtained when I sent for a title search from a Logan County firm. It names the siblings of Sarah and I would like to find information on them all as I have very little. 3. This is not an uncommon event in central Illinois... Lightning zaps electronics in courthouse BY PAUL AYARS THE COURIER Local lightning strikes Wednesday night knocked out a new, $3,800 voting machine displayed in the county clerk’s office in the Logan County Courthouse. The storm’s wake also idled several courthouse employees during office hours Thursday and today. While, the zapped voting machine in the clerk’s office was quickly replaced, other areas of the courthouse received technical damage requiring the expertise of three computer technology services Thursday and today, some both days, officials said. "We can still perform (office) service manually," said Logan County Clerk Sally Litterly. "It’s just not accessible as quickly as some would like it." --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 1. RE: [ILLOGAN] 1855 Logan County State Census
    2. Cheryl Rothwell
    3. I am not an expert on the census. My ancestors came to Logan early and stayed so there hasn't been an overwhelming need to consult the census for information. With that disclaimer, I believe the 4 white males were people living in his house but not necessarily his children. Could be other relatives, relatives of his spouse, maybe even hired hands. Could even be visitors who came for a month. I believe we put too much reliance on the census as 100% accurate. We don't know who the census taker talked to or even if the person was an adult who actually knew the answers. I'm willing to bet they asked the first warm body they found, even if it was a child or the neighbor who just moved there. When you had to travel those distances by horse you probably didn't come back if no one was home nor chase them down out in the field, just asked someone in the neighborhood who may or may not have known the actual facts. 1. 1855 Logan County State Census
    2. Many thanks to Donna Copeland for her transcription. This was a tremendous undertaking on her part, and we really appreciate it. I found my Manning A. Bruce, but now I really have a mystery on my hands. It shows 4 white males 10-20. Manning did not have any boys on the 1850 Mason County Illinois Census, nor the 1860 and 1870 Logan County census, other than one step-son, who was a Campbell. Manning Bruce's brother Thomas, is listed next door to him in 1850 Mason County. I have not been able to locate other siblings for Manning Bruce, other than some females I suspect are his sisters but so far can not prove relationship. I just recently found quite a bit of informaton on Manning Bruce, including his obituary - thought I had him all straightened out - guess that's what I get for thinking!!! Christine

    3. "The (other) settlers on Salt Creek were Patrick Frakes, Nicholas Moore and James Scott, with their families." That is from a discussion of John Downing and family settling in Mt. Pulaski Township. Frakes and Moore were related to Downing by marriage. I don't know who James Scott was. "John Downing was enrolled as a Private Fifth Class, Captain James Scott's Eighth Company, Third Battalion, Washington County Militia, and marched April 15, 1782, according to the evidence of a Return of the Fourth and Fifth Classes dated April 22, 1782." What I am trying to figure out is if it is the same James Scott or a coincidence.
