    1. Holy Cross Cemetery Contact?
    2. James Castellan
    3. The phone number I found listed with Holy Cross Cemetery on the Cemetery page of Logan County USGenWeb was 217-732-9637. The person (private phone) at this number has no involvement with Holy Cross Cemetery, genealogy, etc. I emailed the "web person" at the address on the "home page" [email protected] and it got bounced. Does anyone have a current contact for Holy Cross Cemetery? A collateral ancester Martin Kelly died in 1876 (just before county civil records for deaths, of course!) of a tragic railroad accident. He was living in Logan at the time and was almost certainly buried in a Catholic cemetery. I'd like to see if his gravestone is in Holy Cross and if it gives a specific date of death. Many thanks for any helpful suggestions. Jim Castellan [email protected]

Phillips, but I do find Matilda Bryson Phillips on 15 different pages Peter Moore does not show up even among 25 "Moores". Since Matilda was a relatively common name among Irish and Australians in those days, and not other clues were found, I would guess these are not the Phillips that you are looking for. Matilda Ann Bryson Phillips was born 12NOV1893 in Sydney, Australia. She was married 15June17 to Carl Millard Phillips. John Wilham

    3. I am pretty sure the web site lists all the known cemeteries. Some of them may have additional names I'm not aware of. There are probably small burial sites that were plowed over. We don't know that for a fact but it is highly likely. How would you prepare a list of unmarked graves? There are many, many unmarked graves at Lucas Chapel, for example. They were obviously marked at one time -- you see a lot of smooth stones where something broke off -- but time has taken its toll. And I am sure there are graves that were just unmarked from the beginning. If you are asking if someone kept records of burials from day one in every cemetery the answer is no. Sometimes cemeteries developed because the locals had already buried a couple people there and they decided it might as well be the cemetery for all. Closed isn't my term. I used active and inactive. Joan -- do you list them as closed? I wouldn't assume the inactive ones are the oldest ones. I imagine Turley is the oldest one [don't take that as a fact] and it is inactive but Lucas Chapel and Steenbergen are also pretty old and they are still active. Bowers Templeman is older than the county and you can still buried there although it is not common. There are others. 3. Thanks so much for the information. I do know my 'Robinson' lived in Lincoln, Logan Co., IL (called Postville for a time) from about 1840 to about 1868 and my 'Craven' lived in Lincoln, IL about that same time frame. Both have been documented on the IL 1850 and 1860 census. I will let you know if I see any connection to the names below as I continue to search. I am also searching for a 'Green' that, according to the 1860 IL Census, had a connection to my 'Robinson'. 3. Are there cemetery books that actually list all of the cemeteries known in the Lincoln, Logan County area and that also note unmarked graves in those cemeteries? I notice on a Logan County website that many cemeteries are listed for that area and many are marked 'closed'. I am assuming these are some of the oldest ones there. 3. This is an old query. John Williams was born c 1814 in Blout County, TN. He married Marcy Jane Lucas [daughter of Thomas Lucas and Sarah Hoblit] in 1831 in Sangamon now Logan County. John Williams died in Logan County in 1844 or thereafter. His last child was born Sept. 20, 1844. Researcher Shauna Davis is searching for more information on John Williams, including death date and burial place, and his ancestors. John Williams could be buried at Steenbergen. It is known that there are burials that no marker exists for at Steenbergen. 3. I have just gone through all my files in final preparation for my move. How many copies of printouts from the Marriage Index does one need? Do I really think my email contact list from 1991 is good? I found this on Steenbergen Cemetery, probably saved because it mentions four ancestors. Thank goodness they don't write like that anymore. The grounds purchased by the friends of and lying between the old graveyard - Steenbergens, and the public road on the east, had been planted in trees and is being enclosed by a new plank fence. The cemetery now contains about four acres and with its high elevation and a little care can be made a most beautiful "city of the dead." Many elaborate monuments mark the resting place of the once familiar names of Robert Buckles, father of the very numerous family of that name; Carter Scroggin whose good nature is well remembered in that ringing laugh and happy spirit which was his want; Wm. Copeland, Michael Mann, John Lucas, Elijah Freeman, Wm. Steenbergen, Jeremiah Birks who died in the year 41, and Thomas Lucas. All pioneers and patriarchs whereby[?] sires of sons and daughters whose[?] industry and labor have given us prosperous, fruitful and happy country. The old "land marks" ought not to be forgotten or obliterated. I am at a dead end with James A. Burroughs and am grasping at straws with this email. I do have information on his siblings and ancestors if anyone is interested. Thanks, Lois Branch The Wayne County Press 27 Feb 1896 James A. Burroughs writes from Elkhart: I send my congratulations to all Wayne county friends, especially to Clara Jelly and Mr. Flaharty, who I see were recently married. Mrs. Alice Walker writes from Elkhart: We came here from Wayne county nine years ago. My husband is farming and raising a few hogs for the market; we are doing very well. Jas. A. Burroughs is living with us at present, so we get to read his Press, which is like a letter from home. Mrs. Mary Beck, my mother, and two brothers, Sol and Sherman, are running a barber shop, and doing well. Our family consist of five children three girls and two boys; all are going to school. Our oldest is a girl of seventeen. The Wayne County Press 31 Dec 1896 Mrs. Cynthia Burroughs, of LaMard, was a caller on Tuesday for the purpose of renewing her subscription. She was accompanied by her son, J. A. Burroughs, who recently returned from Elkhart, where he has been located for about three years. He will remain here for several months, and will spend the time putting his mother’s farm in repair. Wayne County Record Thursday, February 14, 1918 James Burroughs and son Edward, of Elkhart are visiting with Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Boze and other relatives and friends.

    2. In a message dated 9/24/04 6:06:57 AM Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: I am curious if the Bryson Genealogy book includes many other names of Logan Co. IL inhabitants between 1850 - 1868. Looking for surnames Craven and Robinson (Robenson). Thanks, JaneAnn Gifford JaneAnn & Lois: I will look this next week. I will also look for the members of the Lake Fork Predestinarian Baptist Church which I think is in the same time frame you mention. E-mail me directly if I fail within 10 days to get back to you.
