The Illinois State Genealogical Society uses the terms active, inactive, and despoiled. Despoiled means that it was known that a cemetery exited there at one time but has been plowed over or disappeared with time. Sometimes a despoiled site can change to inactive and we have had inactive ones become active. I plan to work on one this fall in Mason County that has all but disappeared but the plot has been fenced off for years. ===== Joan Black Lund [email protected] http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~joanlund/

Marilyn, Patrick Kelly was my family ancestor. Bill was just doing a look up in some Logan records -- a great wonderful favor for me. I do have a John Burns(US)/Byrne(as born in Ireland) who married a Mary Murphy in Lincoln, IL in 1868. They had eight kids including a Mary (Mollie) Burns who married a James Murphy. It looks like a close coincidence but not a match up with you lines! Troy, As I go through my "partial book" of naturalizations, I find there is a varying amount of information on individuals. This is all there is for Peter: Langenbahn, Peter Minor's declaration and final oath. Filed October 6, 1888. There is no volume or page number listed for him. The 1910 census shows that he arrived in America in 1883. Bill
Thanks for looking, Bill. I missed that date on the 1910 census, it makes him 15 when he came over instead of 12, which seems more plausible. Sounds like it might be worth taking a look at the original document to see if there is any more info listed. Yes, I actually work a block from the museum. I've used the Stevenson-Ives library a couple of times, but my ancestors were all Logan Co. so it wasn't too useful for me. But if you ever need to do research for McLean Co. they have a lot of local history resources, as does the Bloomington Public Libarary. Hi John. Actually, what I'm referring to in Normal is the Family History Center operated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. You can order films held by the Family History Library in Utah. If you haven't ever visited the site, the web address is www.familysearch.org. You can search for records and if you find family members in their records it will tell you the film # and such that you can use to order and then view the microfilms & fiche. When I make it there I'll be sure to let you know how it goes. Here's the details for the Normal branch. Troy Normal Illinois 1st & 2nd 1628 W. Thank you Bill for your very prompt and helpful reply. I'll contact Logan County Clerk to obtain the naturalization record listed. Also thanks for the "negative" on Martin Kelly's headstone being located in Holy Cross or St. Marys Cemeteries. One for two isn't too bad! Thanks agin for your generous help. Hi Bill! Could you let me know if you see Patrick Kelly in the Logan Co. naturalization records? The 1870 census had a mark in the "male citizen 21+" column but that might be a bad enumerator. He was in the area around late 1850s-1870. Thanks. It is a private number. The person has no involvement with genealogy, just a cemetery contact. I'll check into it. However, the contact for any cemetery will not necessarily know who is buried there or how to locate a specific grave. In some cases they are merely the person who can open the gate. A couple suggestions. First, a person on this list might own the cemetery book which includes Holy Cross and would be so kind as to look your ancestor up for you. Newspapers might be useful. I have no personal experience with naturalization records. The Logan County G&S did listings of the naturalization records in Roots and Branches and eventually I believe collected them all into a publication. There is a cut off date as I understand it -- before a certain date they are at the county and after that they are federal records. If you have names and dates it might work to go to Lincoln. If you are going to have to search you might be better off ordering the microfilm because they aren't going to let you search their records in Lincoln and they will only search and copy them as time permits. Both clerks have other other duties, as you know, and can't drop everything to do this. Depending on which clerk it is, they are going to be tied up with the election on top of their other duties for the next 6 weeks I imagine. It might be the circuit clerk, as a court proceeding but, since they don't do it anymore it might end up being the clerk/recorder. Why not give them a call and see what the situation is?
